Throughout this video I go through every class I took at UCSD as a mathematics-computer science major. From introduction to computer science to theory of computability to a psycho-moms film class, you'll get a sense of the types of courses you could expect as a computer science major (or other programming/mathematics related major) in college. Additionally, you'll get an insight into the class structure at UCSD and the various general education requirements needed in order to graduate college.
If you're looking for some freshman advice or maybe you're a junior curious on switching their major to computer science, I hope you can find some benefit throughout the video. Just as some background, I am currently a senior (class of 2020 woohoo) at uc san diego (ucsd), studying mathematics-computer science, with a minor in entrepreneurship and innovation. It is sort of a joint major where I take both a bunch of math classes, alongside computer science classes. It should be noted that at UCSD, there is also a computer science & engineering major within the jacobs school of engineering. Although CSE majors and math-cs majors take similar classes, my major is within the mathematics department.
As a computer science major you can expect to take all sorts of courses throughout your undergraduate career. Although you may go to another university (other than ucsd), there will likely be an overlap of classes between what I talk about here and your experience. I try to give a brief description of each college class, that way it could prove helpful to all students regardless of which college you go to (even if its not ucsd).
College is an incredibly fun time filled with amazing opportunities and experiences regardless of your major, but it is important to put in the effort in order to succeed.

What!? You also took French?? C’est marveilleux! I took for 3 years French in my high school and I’ve been taking extra classes outside of school for almost a year now. I’m currently studying at a B2 level, but I’m really interested in getting better at French at UCSD. Do you know if there are any French classes you can take there?

Hey, I just got into to UCSD for Math-CS in the sixth college. Was just wondering if there were any important CS classes that you couldn't take because you were in the Math department and not the CSE department? Also, do you think Math-CS is a good choice compared to a traditional BS in CS if I'm planning on applying to SWE internships and jobs?

I think being a pure CSE major would definitely help to be a pure SWE, but it's also very possible as a Math-CS major. Most of the CSE classes that are requirements for Math-CS majors, we have priority. For some of the elective CS classes though were tougher to get into, as CSE students have priority. This only happened to me about twice with Intro to Machine Learning and Software Engineering where I could not find sections to enroll!

Do you think the math parts of your degree were helpful for landing jobs? Or did your math knowledge put you at an advantage over those who didn’t have it?
@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 4 жыл бұрын
I think in some interviews it definitely gave me more to talk about, specifically talking about the relationship between math and computer science. But I wouldn’t say it gave me a specific advantage. I do like the math portions but at times they can become fairly abstract.

I think for some technical interviews I probably could have studied more, but I don’t think it was due to a lack of knowledge. I think being a math-cs major, you learn enough definitely to set you up for success, at least from my perspective!

CSE 190 is super cool, it rotates topics based on the quarter so you can take it multiple times for credit. This quarter one class covered web application performance and another class covered VR. I took the web app one and it was super useful and incredibly interesting. If I had the time I wish I would have taken some of the CSE classes that focused on machine learning!

Hey, Great channel! I have been accepted as a math-cs transfer student to UCSD, but the lack of priority for CSE is a huge issue for me! Do you have any suggestions and do you think is it worth it?
@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! My experience throughout UCSD as a math-cs major, I only ever encountered an issue with lack of priority once or twice. Generally for major required classes, they will give equal priority to math-cs and cse majors. But for non-required cs classes like electives, it can be a little annoying. Most notably the machine learning and software engineering cse classes. If you email the professors directly, they might be able to give you more details on if you will get into the class, and generally professors can over-enroll classes by 5-10%!

@@ByteOfMichael i see. Another question: From what I heard most upper division CS classes are reserved for pure CS majors, and other majors often don't get in because the class gets too full. How difficult is it to get in to these courses as a Math-CS, and what's been your experience trying to get in?
@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 4 жыл бұрын
@@jahhaj1020 Usually from what I've seen if the class is a required class for the Math-CS major (not an elective), then they usually reserve spots for both Math-CS and CSE students. So I've never really struggled getting into the classes I needed. From people I've heard, it's harder to get into CSE classes that you want to satisfy elective requirements. For those classes I have seen them mostly be reserved for CSE students first, but professors are typically allowed to over-enroll the class by 10% of the base class size. Overall, other than electives you should be alright, and even for electives, you will have a wide variety of classes to choose from.
