​@@jaymay7957 I strongly suggest you google the Honorverse (the nickname foe the universe of Honor Harrington series). The books have been on The NYT Best Sellers list so they aren't that unknown. The writer even made some of the books (including the first one eg ) available for free online . There was a tread I read awhile ago (was in on the Giant On The Playground or Space Battel forum? I can't recall) that pits some of the sci-fi universe military including Star Trek , Halo , Star Wars , StarCraft, Warhammer 40K and Honorverse (I'm sure that the Expanse universe would be included if they existed at that time) . They take into account weapon and ship capability, tactics/strategy , industrial capacity /logistics and even FTL techs(speed of travel ). In the end everyone agrees The Honorverse kicked everyone arse in space naval combat due to how they conduct war and their capability. What is funny is the Honorverse doesn't even have the best and most powerful military tech in sci fi. What WH40K fans don't realise is the y are many less popular sci-fi series/universe that have much higher power and tech level than WH40K. The Lensman series for example fire planets and black hole as projectiles and The Culture is on whole different level.

Its not about the guns. Space marines are ridiculously big, fast, and strong. If those are khornate space marines which would make sense considering the weapon of choice, they will absolutely murder everything and anything that was on this battlefield by themselves, if made even remotely lore accurate.

Lorewise, stormtrooper armor is fully capable of ignoring any kinetic rounds up to 20mm. See, tusken raiders attempting to shoot stormtroopers and watching bullets bounce off their armor. 40k really isn't that powerful when you look at the actual facts and compare them to other universes. The only thing they really have in their corner is numbers, and even with those numbers, they functionally can't use them. The warp makes travel so unpredictable, and the bureaucracy makes it so that oftentimes, by the time a request for aid has worked it's way through the channels, the planet requesting help, has been wiped out for decades, if not centuries. A prime example of how far out of their depth they are, is the time an AI came online during a fight the humans were losing badly, and immediately busted out the weapons hidden in the ship that no one even knew were there and wiped the floor with anyone that came to close. Hell, they still say there's no AI in any of their equipment, meanwhile they have "machine spirits." That... Act and behave exactly like AI. The fact is 40k is a post apocalypse universe, with the humans essentially being cavemen on a modern aircraft carrier, they figured out how to ram other ships with, while thinking their tech is the apex and you can't change a single thing otherwise it's a sin against the machine god, while simultaneously ignoring that two tanks, built by separate STC's will have wildly different performance, because one STC has a template with updates, while others are the original unchanged template. Basically one has version 2.0 while others are running version 1.5

@@SRMal8723 Seconded. Equivalent sci-fi units could compare reasonably well to Imperial Guardsmen since their whole thing is pretty much "guy with a laser gun", but once you throw in the Astartes.... Oh boy, shit gets brutally one sided fast. Having legions of guys firing fully automatic rocket launchers while wearing a tank worth of armor and the durability to match is more than most universes get to outside of special hero type units in small numbers. Meanwhile, there's thousands upon thousands of Astartes, maybe even millions depending on how many chapters are floating around (and their current strengths) and whather or not you include Chaos Marines...

Yeah. The meme about them being so weak is just from the fact that, in the stories, they are usualy deployed against much stronger units like Space Marines or Orks, who can take massive amounts of laserfire before going down. In the books you rarely read about Guardsmen engaging other enemies on face value and if they do, it´s either just to set the scene for the plot, without much focus on the overall fight or they are used by main characters were their effectivness can be seen as plot-armour. Another reason is balancing in games. No matter if it´s the tabletop or one of the videogames, the normal Guard-units are always balance to have less firepower in exchange for more numbers.

Stormtroopers, or tempestus scions, are elite specialists with more powerful hell-guns, and a stronger carapace armor. Planetary defense forces: The pdf are charged with defending planets, and are where guardsmen are recruited from.some are on par with imperial guard regiment, but generally lack decent equipment, including personal comms. They usually use autoguns, but often have las cannons, and heavy stubbers. Adeptus sororitas: The sisters of battle are the military wing of the ecclesiarchy. Their power armor provides the same level of protection as space marine armor(Less armor), and increases their speed and strength, with little loss of agility. Also equipped with power swords, and bolters. Basically nuns with guns. Adeptus astartes: Augmented, humans with improved biology, who survived trials with a survival rate of 10% or less before becoming space marines. They have multiples of the same organs, like two hearts, and have acid spit, adaptive skin, and lungs. A standard space marine is a walking light tank, that can run at 35-45(60 max) mph, armed with .75 cal gyro jet rounds, who can lift on average 2.7 tons(5-6 max). Bolter ammunition varies from diamand tip, mass reactive, poison, and ext. Their ceramite, and adamantium armor, is heat absorbent, and strongest at the pauldrons which can take some tanks shells. There's also the stronger terminator power armor, devastator marines(heavy bolter), and assault marines(Jetpacks). Adeptus custodes: A space marine is to a custodes, what a guardsmen is to a space marine. A custodes is the equivalent of 10-30 standard space marines, with superior armor, vehicles, augmentations and weapons. A handful are a match for a primarch. They are his closest and most loyal attendants/guards capable of fliping a tank with a kick. Primarchs: The primarchs are the "sons" of the emperor and top of the food chain in genetic engineering only, only dwarfed by their "father". They all wield individual special powers, and carry the souls of powerful warp entities. 2 have been wiped from history, and half of the remaining 18 have turned traitor. Titans: Titans are the most powerful war machines at the imperium's disposal on land, towering 17-100+ meters tall. They are equipped with void shields, and more powerful titans can level a city, and trade fire with a warship. Scout titans, the weakest of titans, need city block level fire power to take down. Psykers: Psykers are those gifted with the power of the warp. Astropaths are a mutant strain of psyker used to navigate the warp. Psykers in general have varying abilities, at varying levels. Lightning/electricity, mind control, persuasion, energy, warp storms, head combustion, telepathy, mind reading, telekinesis, Pyrokinesis, and ect. 1,000 psykers are sacrificed a day to the golden throne to keep the astronomicon running. They come in the following grades, weakest to strongest. Rho/Pi-Omicron/ Xi/Nu/Mu/Lambda/Kappa-Iota/Theta/Eta-Zeta/Epsilon-Delta/Gamma-Beta-Alpha-Alpha+. The higher the level the higher the rarity, risk of insanity, possession, and power. Again abilities, and how powerful said abilities are varies. A beta level psyker can be more powerful in mind control but far weaker in lightning to an alpha class. Some alpha class can snap titans in half, some can not. Alpha level + are ludicrously strong being able to hide the moon into the warp, mind control entire planets, cause world wide warp storms, destroy ships, and ect. GW has remedied this by stating on multiple occasions that everything is canon, and that 40k lore is in universe riddled with half truths, myths, propaganda, hyperbole, and understatements. The scale varies, and the lowest showings, are just as canon as the highest. The best we can do is find consistency. Your average space marine is the equivalent of twenty-thirty guardsmen(Now in lore they have been compared to 10, by dorn but this is an understatement). Despite being made of far superior material than steel, space marine armor is still only late cold war level. A 1,000 space marines by themselves, without orbital support is not enough to take over our own world let alone 100. Space marines are often aided by guardsmen, and pdf as well. Pdf, and guardsmen mostly use ww1, and ww2 level vehicles, but with more advanced weapons. Space marine armor has been cracked, and wearer almost killed by in atmosphere heights, penetrated and killed by falling stalagmite, by the claws/beaks of non genetically engineered/altered animals, and a space marine has even been killed by a wooden spear, and a single lucky las shot. The baneblade super heavy tank is an example of good armor by our current standards. Just good, not super, or ultra heavy armor. The imperium is also plagued by constant rebellions, revolutions, infighting, and ect on top of the various enemies knocking on their doors. Taros air war put the imperial guard in the billions. In one book I read a serious important battle, only had like 70 thousand guard/pdf. In one comic a planetary pdf only numbered 16 thousand. In one of the ciaphas cain novels, a single guard regiment was enough to challenge the planetary pdf. The oh so big crusades usually just have dozens of millions- a few billion. The imperium can only transport about 200 billion to a little over a trillion imperial guard at any given time, are lacking in air support, and the majority of worlds aren't that well defended general. Full planetary shields are extremely rare, and most of the time they just cover important cities. A Lot of their super weapons, like the Speranza are either lost, have their limitations, didn't make themselves or are out of commission.
