I thought Decidueye was based off the Hawaiian stilt owl. They both look very similar with coloring and have the long white legs. The type change is because that species went extinct and therefore the living, flying type owls of Rowlet and Dartrix are no longer flying because they all died out, hence now remain as ghosts.

There's a term for beings like Dusknoir, entities that guide lost spirits to the spirit world and help them find their way; they're called "Psychopomps." Notable Psychopomps from various cultures include Anubis, the Egyptian God said to weigh your soul after you die, the Grim Reaper - obviously - and entities like Hades, Persephone and Charon, from Greek mythology. Also, check out Gunnerkrigg Court. Really good webcomic about a psychopomp-in-training.

About decidueye: Owls also are depicted as witches or spirits that took that form to encover themselves. Lots of cultures have this supersticious look on Owls, even killing them due tradition. Things like owls stealing babies are a normal thing in folklore

Geist is German for Ghost. The "polter" from Poltergeist means as much as making loud sounds by throwing over objects, both willingly and unwillingly. Basically Poltergeist means Ghost that throws stuff around and makes a lot of noise.

Giratina in Diamond & Pearl is found in Turnback Cave at Sendoff Spring, which real world location is based off of Lake Mashu, "The Lake of the Devil" (The Ainu devil depicted in their stories). A local legend says that if you see the surface the Lake you may have bad luck and the lake is so clear no one is allowed to go near it or defile it. Furthermore the Ainu devil is depicted as a snake who would eat the sun but was but was thrawted by a crow that had flew down his throat, much like Giratina's Origin Forme appearance. It should also be noted that Giratina wears a Kabuto helmet and its horns are a Datemono ornament, like a samurai. It should be noted that there was conflict between the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido where Shinnoh is based on, and the "Children of the Sun" or the Japanese people whio came from southern Okinawa, that we know today. At lake mashu there is a cave called Takeshiro's Cave, A Cave the ainu people reveared as housing the Gods by the Ainu people. There's probably more iconography and information associated with Giratina but no one's really looked into it yet. but all this is more of the stuff surrounding giratina than its name origin

Doppelgänger and Gjenganger is pretty much the same thing. The Swedish version of the word is Gengångare. Not literally the same as doppelgänger, but the words are related to ghostly or mystical... things(?) that looks like a person, but the Swedish and Norwegian words are indeed more of a revenant, or someone who walks again after death or "går igen" in Swedish. *Edit*: Doppelgänger is actually directly translated into Dubbelgångare in Swedish, but the connections between the words are never the less interesting to me.

Gengar could also be seen as the doppelganger of Clefable.

My reasoning for Decidueye is that a bit of its soul lingers in the dead feathers it uses as arrows, allowing it to adjust their trajectory, or use ghost type powers like soul shackle with it. Basically more like its feathers/leaves are undead. Based primarily on the Deciduous part of its namesake.

I once read a theory that Dartrix _commits suicide_ to become Decidueye because of its narcissism and feeling of inferiority due to being being somewhat of a birdbrain (no pun intended). Edgy, I know.

Decidueye is literally a "burung hantu", Indonesian/Malay of owl which means "ghost bird".

I always thought of Drifloon as a lost balloon. When a child lets go of a balloon, they have that dawning realization that they can't get it back. It's sort of a rite of passage for a kid; a lesson about loss. Drifloon, as a ghost type, represents the "death" of that balloon: it's a manifestation of despair at something that can never be recovered.

Fun fact: despite it's pokedex entry and the common "Pokemon Satan" stereotype, Giratina is actually widely misunderstood. For matter to exist, anti-matter must also exist in some form. Giratina was specifically created to be the Polar opposite of Palkia and Dialga, but because contact between matter and anti-matter results in complete and utter destruction, Giratina was immediately banished to the Distortion world, most likely immediately after it's own birth. It probably didn't even have time to understand what had even happened before it's own creator banished it from the world and into the void of chaos from whence Arceus' own egg came, a place before time and space and a place where there *WAS* no time or space. Additionally, Giratina is rather timid if anything, since it didn't just kill Cyrus the first chance it got, unlike other pokemon such as Kyurem and Mewtwo who've legitimately killed people (mewtwo destroyed the lab it was born in and Kyurem has been said to eat people), it chose to leave him alive, and in pokemon Generations Cyrus is straight up thankful for Giratina's intervention. Even in the Anime, Giratina only ever attacks anything when it felt it's home was genuinely threatened, and it mainly only ever specifically attacked Dialga and Palkia because their fight literally almost completely flooded the distortion world with black clouds of distorted energy.

Gjenganger / Genganger /Gengångar refers to a specific type of ghost in Scandinavia. I.e. people who had an unfinished goal or task in life that they were very dedicated to, and who walks again to do said tasks but can never finish it. Old lore about them state that to help the ghost to pass over, you can complete the task for it, and it'll disappear.

I’m surprised that it wasn’t brought up that Blacephalon could also be inspired by the notion of a dullahan. Given the fact that it can remove its head and the fact of its ghostly alluring demeanor and dullahans are commonly portrayed as possessing ghostly flames or have them jetting out from their neck where their head was.
