When Gran Turismo 2 released in 1999, its car roster had been dramatically enlarged, to around 620 vehicles according to GT Fandom, while other sources state that it holds more like 650 cars.
However, that number was dramatically reduced in Gran Turismo 3, which had just 180 vehicles - way closer to the amount we got on the original GT.
So, what happened to all the models that were introduced in GT2? In this video, we'll go through all the vehicles that were introduced in Gran Turismo 2, and have never been seen again so far.
Please note that this list does not include any cars that were in Gran Turismo 1 as well as GT2, A lot of vehicles introduced in GT1 were also cut after GT2, but trying to incorporate these as well would have made the video even longer! Maybe I'll cover these separately some time.
A few honourable mentions too:
The Concept Car LM Edition: This car appeared in GT1 and GT2, which is why it isn't in the video. However, it took on quite a different appearance in GT2, so I was considering including it, but decided not to in the end.
There were also two 240SXs that appeared only on the PAL version of GT2. They're identical to the US versions but were coded as separate cars for some reason, while other cars that changed names between regions simply had their names changed. I left these out.
All the cut cars were left out because they were... well... cut!
The Nismo 400R Preceding Model: This car has just been added to GT7 under the name Nismo 400R '95, after not being seen since GT2!
I've left Vauxhall out as all their cars are the same as the Opel ones.
Did I miss any? Let me know in the comments! As far as I know, there's no definitive list of the cars that only appeared in Gran Turismo 2, so I've researched it as best as I can.

As a huge BMW nerd (and E39 5-series owner), its really a shame that the E36,39,38, & 31 never returned at all even in M spec configuration. And although I'm sure you've noticed the other comments but the E60 M5 brought the badge to the series in GT4

It’s good to see the community trying to place some cut cars and these forgotten cars in GT2+ and A-Spec Edition. I would like to see more of these behind the curtain cars getting the spotlight since it widens up the nuzlocks we can play. Speaking of some of these cars, some are popping up in the “New Car Suggestion” in A9, so this video might get me some ideas to bring some there for a better future.

Always felt like GT 3 felt like a next gen GT 1 successor, where as GT 4 felt like the true successor to GT 2, for various reasons including and beyond the large car list 2 and 4 had for their eras

This is, in my opinion, what makes GT2 one of the few truly realistic in the series: you can go into a dealership and... Have access to practically the entire production of the time and more, as in some cases. So many cars that some, like the Daiatsu van, I think, ironically featured in later titles, aren't even cars.

I am absolutely at a loss as to why GT2 is the only GT game to feature a first-gen RX7. Like, how do you ignore such a landmark car for so long? Especially as a Japanese developer? Great job on the video, Matt!

The Jaguar XJR 15 is featured in Forza Horizon 5, but never in any GT games since GT2 - Well, there are a few more of the road cars in the video that are featured in the Forza franchise. Also, the Golf was not a "VS" model. Instead, it was the VR5 (also written as V5) - This engine came from an era when VW was very creative in their designs. The VR5 engine never became a success, compared to the much more known VR6, or the standard inline-4 1.8 Turbo 20V engine. Another curious thing is that the Golf MK.2 was never featured, despite being a very popular model, even in the late 90's on the used car market. And being a VW, the Golf came in so many configurations, but the most popular ones at the time were the 1.8 and 1.6 Diesel variants, as well as the Syncro 4WD versions. Not forgetting the legendary GTI models either, with the 1.8 8V and 1.8 16V, as well as the G60 variant. - From a performance model standpoint, I am really curious to why the Golf G60 and the Polo G40 was never featured, or even the G60 Syncro Limited, which was the fastest production Golf at the time, before the R32 came along. Also curious to why the Passat has never been featured, despite being hugely popular in Europe. Most notably the 1.8 Turbo, and 1.9 TDI variants, or looking back to the 1980's with the MK.2 Passat Syncro 2.2 5E - It used a naturally aspirated variant of the legendary 5-cylinder engine, which hailed from the Audi Quattro. The Passat has been part of the european street-car scene for a long time, alongside the Golf and the well-known Audi models from that era.

Would love these 90s "normal" cars back in the modern games. The 323 variants, Mondeo, Punto, Prelude, Accords, Pulsars, Primeras, etc etc. Those were cars you would see everywhere growing up in the UK at the time and the fact you could rag them about in a game just delivers this sense of realism you don't get with all the modern vision cars.

7:15 obviously not official, but GT2 Plus has a restored E36 323i Coupé. It's a pretty useful prize car. I'm still gutted 25 years later that none of the Super Tourers got carried over, especially the '98 P11 Primera. Would've been awesome to have them as fully licensed racing models in GT4.

@@KaterinUA5 I'm pretty sure Codemasters held the ToCA/BTCC license up until Motorsport Games got their grubby mits on it, which is why the '98/'99 Super Tourers were racing mods only instead of official race cars. GT3 has a fair few touring cars though, most of them are JGTC cars with 3 DTM cars (the Opel Calibra, Astra and Mercedes CLK) and a V8 Supercar (the AU Falcon).

It's impressive how gargantuan Gran Turismo 2's car list was for a game at the time. It makes sense why they drastically reduced the car list for Gran Turismo 3 given the major graphical overhault, but I wonder if we would have had less restrictive and repetitive events if there were more cars to race with. For example, all the kei cars that weren't included meant that the Lightweight K-Cup event in GT3's Beginner League could only be entered by three cars (only two of which were available to the player). Fortunately, both the Suzuki Alto Works and Daihatsu Cuore could be won from other beginner events instead of having to buy them.

More than allowing these car to return they should have fixed the inaccurate specs of cars that appeared in later games. The glaring examples are Panoz Esperante GTR-1 weight and chassis errors.(too heavy and the wheelbase, width and chassis of a road car) Overweight XJ220 and Lister cars being severely overweight in all titles the appeared in. Fix the Peugeot 905 slow shift and nerf the overperforming real life failure 88C-V.

@@purwantiallan5089 You talking about the A Spec mod right? I really want to try that one out! I hope they include the 1990 IMSA GTO RX-7 Race Car. That car was one of the most successful race cars in history and I'm confused as to why it was never implemented in the games. The closest we get is the 83 RX7 fully tuned with racing mod.

@@reinatycoon3644 yah, i havent played it myself but A spec mod fixes some of those inaccurate performace figures like the GT500 cars having over 600 to 700 HP was a mistake, and one I would love to learn the origins of. Like what did they think the 500 in GT500 meant at the time? I ended up assuming that perhaps they were unrestricted HP figures, but who knows. It was the same with the GT300 cars in GT2 instead of within 300hp they were more like within 400hp.

You could add one more car on this list from a livery standpoint is the '99 Toyota GT-One for its livery is from the Fuji 1000KM race that year. From GT3 onwards, it was made into the #3 Le Mans entry.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane Matt as always - what surprises me looking back is the sheer range of what are (on the face of it) mundane cars. But that's why I loved GT in the first place - for instance my uncle's Accord Estate (sorry Wagon) was in GT1 and 2 and I loved driving it around in full Castrol livery. Possibly very sad, but I couldn't care less

I love the variety in models GT2 had say you wanted to enter the 80s sportscar cup and want to use an R32 Skyline; you're not just locked to having the top of the line 1994 v-spec ii option; you can use the 1989 version to participate in aaid event. Btw, I made it to the end of the video (over the span of a couple days lol). Great work Matt👍🏾

Two things I love about this game. The variety of base cars (my first real life car was an Audi A3 1997) and also the amount of wagons. As far as I remember, there is not only 1 wagon included on GT7...

Pretty fun video! Also for the RE Amemiya GT300 RX-7, it was simply updated to the 2004 tubeframe chassis version in GT4, and would in GT5 even get a premium version in form of the 2006 car that took the GT300 title that year. One thing that I feel like it's a bit of a missed opportunity for GT7, it's how they didn't made tune parts from these old tuned cars as modifications for equivalents in GT7. I'd love to get an RX-7 Spirit R for example and give it the GT-Concept aero kit!

If I had to wager a guess, the 90's model Mitsubishi Galants were probably dropped in favor of the then newer Mitsubishi Lancers. The reason why I believe this is because I owned a base model 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer and the Haynes Repair Manual for it which detailed that the 1996-2003 Mitsubishi Lancers and Galants were the exact same car with different body moldings and trim options featuring almost exactly the same inner workings and engines. It's the same deal with a lot of Accura Integras, Honda Civics, and Honda Accord as well as they tend to be built off the same platforms with a lot of shared components but different trims and options.

There are so many cars i miss seeing again. Lister storm road version and race version would've been appreciated if they made a return. I could make an endless list but ever since the first Gran turismo i always loved comparing the lap times between cars. If there's One thing that i appreciated GT 7 in having, it was the choice to use cars from the garage to race against.

Thanks, Matt, you're great as always The only issue I was having while watching this video is absence of one of my favourite cars from GT1 and GT2 - Dodge Concept Car (Dodge Copperhead in real life). Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought, that after Gran Turismo 2 Polyphony never introduced this car again (which LM Edition as sure kicked ass and could easily beat not only GT500 championship, but World Championship as well). If they did, please specify, where exactly, so I could enjoy a bit more :)

That's definitely one I considered adding in because it changed a lot between GT1 and GT2. Ultimately I left it out because this video solely focuses on cars that only appeared on GT2 and no other games in the series. Anyway, I'm glad you liked the video. :)

Damn, I feel like with many inclusions of cars in GT2, we also lost a lot of cars mentioned going into the sequel(s), although some were updated to either newer or older models. That, along with the fact that the game gave more variants to some models which is cool and adds to the realism factor as well.

GT2 was my first racing sim and the alfa 145 QV is now my car in reallife. I wish for years now it comes back in any racing game. Last one was 2004 kaido racer and i still did play it a couple of months ago. 😂

Gran Turismo 2 forever the best GT game ever made!! (along with GT1 and GT4 of course) but GT2 forever the best game of the series! Everything on the game feels so magic and total nostalgia, all the cars on the game and lot of cars are only available on GT2 and never returned on the next GT games. For just 1 car example that I love so much and it's only on GT2 the totally amazing, wonderful, perfect and legendary STP Taisan Dodge Viper GT😻 Polyphony Digital making a full remake/remade of GT2, with everything from the classic 1999 game, including beta stuff all restored and included on the game, some cars from GT1 returning on GT2 too... the best GT game ever!!! and maybe addicting some more cars from the era just like the amazing mod the A-Spec for the game, also Polyphony Digital should be totally proud of the community in still making the GT2 all alive and running and more complete.

Fun fact: the Sunny does appear in Forza Horizon 5, but under its appropriate localized name, the Nissan Tsuru. It was the most requested car in the Forza community. Also, The Road Runner would mostly be superceded by the Superbird, which in real life has a Road Runner trim available, complete with the iconic car horn. GT4 simply went with the standard Superbird instead of the Road Runner trim for the same reason the Road Runner was renamed in GT2. Lastly, the 1997 Corolla Rally Car is horribly slow in GT2, and the 1998 version is faster. Fast enough to stay competitive.

add to that some viper also never returned 1. all of viper rt/10 (both standard and racing,tho it appeared before on first series. but it never returned after GT2,could be the console exclusive) 2. the racing version of viper oreca (white with blue stripe),canaska southwind (white with green stripe),chamberlain engineering (blue with white stripe),also never returned after 2. making it PS1 exclusive

Cars I deeply miss that are in this video: Alfa 155 (yes, it's now in FH5, but it's a V6 AWD model, close, but not the same) Alfa 166. It always came across to me as a more classy 156 BMW 740i. I love a V8 E38 '97 Camaro. These earlier ones look so much better than the facelift Chrysler Phaeton. It's the law to include it Both HKS drag cars Honda Accord wagon. I just like wagons Honda Civic Ferio. And I like sedan Civics Jaguar XJR. Much nicer to look at than the S-Type Lexus SC400. Everyone loves the SC300, but I want the V8 Mazda RX-7 FB. I just really love the wedge design of the early ones Mitsubishi Legnum. I already stated that I like wagons Mitsubishi Mirage coupe, or as we call it over here, the Lancer coupe Mitsubishi Pajero Mini. These were fun Nissan March Super Turbo. Gotta love a twin charged car Nissan Primera wagon. Blah blah wagon Nissan R390 Road Car. See Toyota GT One for reasoning Literally any 4 door Nissan Skyline R34 Nissan Skyline 25GT. Because it's the R34 that you ACTUALLY see from time to time driving on the road Nissan Stagea. You can probably guess why Nissan 300ZX-GTS. C'mon, it just looks cool 1967 Plymouth GTX. This one stings the most, despite the fact the gearing was weird in GT2 (it was a 4 speed without 3rd basically). Also, that 'Cuda isn't a 1970, those taillights are from the later 72-74 or so model years. Also also, they could've gone around the Road Runner naming by just picking that year's GTX instead Renault Espace F1. Who doesn't want it to return? Subaru Vivio, possibly my favourite of the Kei cars, especially in supercharged form Toyota Caldina. Yes, there's the Caldina ED in GT4, but the earlier Caldinas look a lot nicer Toyota Celica SS-II Mechanical Sports Version, simply because LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE Celica of that generation where I live had that exact bodykit. I have never in person seen one without that. Bonnet spoilers and all NOT listed, but Toyota GT One Road Car. I'd love to see both that and the R390 Road Car appear in the same game again, and I only ever see Gran Turismo doing the GT One, despite the fact Forza has included the R390 1982 Toyota Starlet. C'mon, is a little hatchback with rear wheel drive Vector W8. It's awful, but you gotta love it

Hey Matt! I know you mentioned Legnum VR-4 being in GT4, but I feel like since we have this, saying that 90s Galants were gone is a stretch - in fact, in some markets, Legnum was marketed just as Galant wagon :D And I feel like Polyphony felt it'd be a bit redundant to have Galant sedan and Galant wagon/Legnum for some reason.

The Puma being made today is a 1.0 Turbo crossover, a far cry from the original sporty Coupe, hence it's abscence in GT.

I played both GT1 and 2 on my ps1, and really all those cars featured in your video missed me ❤. Especially the european brand with small, light, fun hatches and of course 4-doors and luxuous berlina's, they were so popular at their time. We know that choices needed to be made but cutting off and threw to the junkyard now classics cars from the early 90's and replacing them by hundred copy-paste skylines or dozens of miata's and lancers and imprezas and nsx (forcing us japanese cars to use) but hey, I tried one of each and don't need to collect them all ! GT5-6 gained quantity but loosed quality/diversification and mention that no dlc were available...

Isn't the 528i the L6 version? Which means 190 hrsprs, not 142. Wasn't the Terios always a SUV? This GT2 gen was sold in my country in 90's. It's not hard to get why the GT2 is still the best: it focused on daily cars, our cars, that we use or see in use, or cars our parents had, which gave and still give a different magic in the entire game. No one will ever reproduce what GT2 done.

Galant super vr4 such a good car honestly but its heavy (most galants are heavy due its made for mid class luxury instead of performance). Not much racing history but good to bring some variants for jdm legend vibes. And galant vr4 itself is still underrated 90s jdm out there

@@MattJ155 i remember your older videos your mic quality was superb, maybe you're using a different mic, or its probably on my end. Ill try a diff device. A lot of high, nasal-y tones, like if the audio had a old gramophone effect added to it, unless that's exactly what you did. It sounds like there is no base in your voice, and its very nasal-y.
