In recent years a new threat has emerged from above that should get all of us, soldiers especially, looking up: drones. Particularly tactical FPV drones.
In the ‘old’ days of, say, the first decade of this century, drones could basically do two things: watch stuff on the ground in real time and drop a bomb if required. They were called things like Predator, Reaper and Global Hawk as if having a really beefy name hid the fact they were extremely vulnerable to modern air defence systems.
But they weren’t expected to operate against modern air defence systems.
In this episode of Defence in Depth, Dominic Nicholls, The Telegraph’s associate editor, explains the rapid developments in drone warfare and what this means for the battlefield, military planners, future conflicts and Ukraine.

Fishing nets could be effective to catch fpv drones and prevent them from entering doors, windows etc. Would be very difficult for a drone operator to see them before its too late. Just as it is for a fish in the water.

Could also have a shotgun shell that breaks open into 3 or 4 pieces with a wire connecting them. All it needs is to disrupt a rotor.

Russians are already using nets that are even covered as camouflage, have seen bunch of footage of drones dropping and explosives still making it thru the net or flying right thru the doorway. One even making into open hatch of a tank.
@considerthis9007
@considerthis9007 8 ай бұрын
Yeah i saw some footage inside a Russian controlled town where they had strong up rows of nets across the street at intervals between lampposts because the drones were coming up behind the vehicles and hitting them. Kind of worked until the Ukrainians figured out to strike the vehicles through the gaps. Imagine trying to secure a whole MSR properly with nets! But your fishnet idea across HQ entrances would help stop drones getting inside.

I've been speculating that we'll see returns of old tech, like some sort of barrage balloons, and much smaller calibre ack ack, instead of night bombing raids it's now drone swarms, the more the world changes, the more it stays the same!

Mr Nicholls explains aspects of military action so I understand despite having no background in military theory. I watch for these episodes but this one was particularly interesting. I'd like to know more about what Mr Nicholls knows about using drones to clear mine fields after the war , their uses now to save lives of the wounded and are other nonbattle uses being researched to protect civilians or soldiers from harm?

I'm surprised there isn't a cheap handheld device able to detect the frequencies normal used by drones. It wouldn't stop the drones but at least warn the troops below a drone is operating near by. So they can disable the drone or at least hid from it.

This is an excellent video. Drones will be the new warfare model and I have not seen much done to counter it. There have been some prototypes created to counter them but nothing is in mass production in the west. Force protection will become a problem for NATO forces. This will effect moral and determination for the Soldiers on the ground. We will see more drones used by Iran and NK and maybe China. People are working on this problem but no doctrine has been created to counter drones.

The first thing that pops into my layperson mind who's absolutely zero military experience would be a claymore system that provides aerial protection. I dunno if im using the wrong term, i don't mean for it to be mined, just a technical version of a trip wire. It also occurred to me that if someone who knew about such things, well a small drone with thermal camera etc, attached with a fibre optic and fitted with a headphone jack into a mobile device that had downloaded your specific application to make use of the images. Well, whilst very far from perfect, it could protect anything from a technical to a tank, the sort of military support that a technological nation could provide to one devoid of such. A small and simple idea that could instantly modernise a vehicles awareness of whats going on around it?!?! This idea has been floating around my head for a while, i dare say there's a really obvious shortcoming I've not thought of, so please point them/ it out if anyone can be bothered!! Really intriguing and thought provoking content, keep it up..

The spy drones left years ago. Cities with a lot of crime like Juarez have drones that record all the traffic. That way if they find a body. They can go back and see who did it and track everywhere that person went. They'll know where their safehouse is and who else they associated with. Won't be long I bet till they find a reason to arm those drones...

I was kinda hoping all this new unmanned drone warfare could take the "man" out of the equation more. Whether it be operating these drones safely in an underground bunker in the field or millions of miles away safely at home, maybe we'll all start to value life more and any human losses will be seen in the future as unacceptable and as the tragedy it is. I dream of the day we're all just fighting each other in cyberspace like a video game where whoever wins there, we all agree is the winner on the battlefield. Too idealistic? Maybe.

Time to fast-track directed energy weapons, and sensors that are tuned to smaller, slower flying objects. These are the best protection available against drones. Directed energy weapons (AKA laser guns) have been in development for decades now, surely they're at a stage that they can be rolled out in a limited capacity just powerful enough to take out drones?

RAF already delegate force and perimeter security to RAF Regiment so there is an existing model for assets like an air base. Hope they have been working on drone swarm defence to keep our $100Mn aircraft and crews safe. Infantry have always done force protection at squad, platoon, company levels so AFU relationships need to enable the lessons learned on survival in the drone-space. Future Soldier needs to get this done now with appropriate equipment and services. Its clear that AI will be important to make our capabilities more resilient in contested space e.g. GNSS suppression. Slava Ukraine! #StandWithUkraine

topic? the differences between young and old soldiers. Someone reported that the Ukrainian army has a higher average age than the US WW2 army did - does this matter? Some instructor said they can get the old ones to do the same training and indoctrination as the young ones, but they cannot get them to love it. Are there differences in effectiveness - and survival? If there are differences, how would mass mobilization/conscription change the war?

The Weapons Engineers everywhere already hard at work figuring out how to counter these drones. After all they are just remote-controlled aircraft. Their small size and light construction is the only thing saving them-----if they were the size of an F-16 they'd all have been blown out of the sky long ago. Many times they are detected but the missile to kill them costs more than they do so no one fires at them. New military tech ALWAYS eventually is countered.

One hand tide is that Ukraine should be looking more at what it could do to create disfunction in Russia, and its propergangda machine should be targeted of individuals could help. More cheap weapons of drones with people and individuals from all over the world getting help to store up raw materials to make these weapons an effective chain link supply. To build in millions the weapons I mean how Isreal for such a small country get its people to organise them self around the world a Ukraine needs look at how Isreal has developed and have great power. Have Isreal over stepped in Aserbiguan though. Underground factory's croping up deep underground all over Ukraine is surely needed and women coming back to help to build weapons and creating developing machine ideas 24/7.

Disagree that protecting one's forces should be the priority. Ofcourse your soldiers should have defenses against drones and the best kit, but wars are won by offensive means. Focus on eliminating the threat and the period your soldiers are prone to drone strikes will be shortened. It's also just a matter of time before drone countermeasures equal or overwhelm the drone threat. Defensive responses by nature come after a new threat evolves.
