Why Ukraine's strategy terrifies the Russian army | Defence in Depth

One way military commanders look at a campaign is through the geographic lens of deep, close and rear operations. Deep: long range precision artillery and missile strikes, attacks by special forces or partisans and commando raids to destroy key infrastructure like airfields or radar stations.
Close: the intense and violent contact battle where most of the physical fighting happens. And, Rear: the training bases, logistic hubs and headquarters locations that must be kept safe from the enemy if you are to sustain operations for any length of time.
It has also been expanded in conceptual terms into the architecture needed for the battle in the mind, which is, after all, where wars are won and lost.

Totally not related to Ukrainian and I still find the presentation very moving. It's very tragic for the Ukrainian people; but I also know war & tragedies, born at the height of the Vietnam War, around 1968 or so. After the Communists in SE Asia --- supported by Communist Russians and Chinese --- took over, 1975, of much of "Indochina," former French colony... which consisted of Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.... we also left SE Asia. Despite the half-hearted help and promises by the CIA ---- my country being the most heavily bombed nation on earth, even more heavily bombed than Vietnam, was mostly the work of the CIA --- who lightly equipped a generation of mountain tribe militia, from the late 1950s to the early 1970s, with mostly surplus American WW2 light rifles.... asking my father and his generation, around 30,000 of irregular militia to go and harass and slow down the march of many TENS of thousands of North Vietnamese troops coming into both Laos and supplying their comrades in South Vietnam, along the eastern parts of Laos..... Again, THAT was why Laos, my birth country, was the most heavily bombed region on earth, via American B-52... virtually 24/7 for over a decade straight.... to slow that intractable march of Russian and Chinese supported North Vietnamese Communists.... a DECLARATION made by President John F. Kennedy, with the former King of Laos visiting him in the White House, early 1960s.... Anyway, I found this tribute to the Ukrainians... from the common people to front line soldiers.... moving because, as the British news columnist/reporter said... they had no other choice, beyond surrendering to the invaders, their much larger next door neighbors. Zelensky exhibited, at the very highest levels, humanity and bravery, when he calmly told the America intel folks: "I need weapons, not a ride out of town..." If Zelensky had been the leader of a relatively, militarily powerful nation, it would still have been a very brave thing to say; but his military, Feb 24, 2022 had a budge of only $6B... and he's standing his ground against the "second most powerful military in the world"... from the largest nation on earth, a nation with more nukes than all other nations nukes combined! And the former comedian has proven his real political leadership quality over the last 1.8 years.... And around him, the Ukrainians and much of the world rally...

Tactics are unknown, for those are military secrets. Strategy, simply put, is to get rooskies out of their territory. And when rooskies have made their nest somewhere, they don't just get out willingly or when it gets dangerous or uncomfortable, they have to be exploded out of those muddy open sewers they call trenches. And then more comes and they need to be exploded too. Basically, they are like roaches or bed bugs. "Kill them before they lay eggs. Kill them with fire". They've always been this way. We Finns found that out in hard way in Winter War.

People sometimes scoff, calling Zelensky a clown or an actor, because of his previous career. However, I think his career as a comedic actor has actually been very beneficial for his roll as president. Zelensky is media-trained, he knows how to get a crowd on his side. I'm NOT saying that he's just acting it all; the guy clearly has balls of steel. He's not pretending anything here, 'I need ammo, not a ride' and visiting the front are incredible acts of bravery. My point is merely that there are also brave people who are not able to convey what's in their hearts out to the world, and that's where being media-trained comes in.

Crimea came under Ukrainian control for a very brief period of time and only because Ukraine was in the USSR. Its history as part of Russia goes back hundreds of years. Sevastopol has been home to Russias Black Sea fleet since the 18th century. It is critical military infrastructure because it is Russias only deep, warm water port. Russia would lose it if Ukraine joined NATO and considers this to be an existential threat. How should Russia - or indeed, how would any country deal with the prospect of a hostile military alliance threatening it in this way?

The Ukrainian resistance is a model of courage. It’s a reminder of why bravery, duty and a willingness to defend your nation are utterly indispensable. Too many of us in the West have grown cynical about these virtues. We in the West have given up on courage. Our safety-first approach to life equates bravery with recklessness. The Ukrainian resistance reminds us why courage matters - and why we all need to rediscover this virtue. 😉

People tend to forget that the Kherson counteroffensive last year took a long time to succeed. It began, in fact, a month before the lightning fast Kharkiv offensive. The Ukrainians started off by proclaiming that the Kherson offensive was going to be a major thrust. They loudly promoted it for several months but all that the world could see were some very minor skirmishes here and there. The major story seemed to be that Russia's airborne troops were successfully holding their ground against determined Ukrainian attacks. Even the Russians bought into this idea and reenforced their troops in Kherson by transferring soldiers from the Kharkiv front, which was the main Ukrainian goal all along. When the Ukrainians judged that the Russians had weakened their Kharkiv front significantly, that was when they launched their offensive in the Kharkiv region, not in the Kherson region. The startled, weakened Russian units, unprepared for a defensive struggle, collapsed. Then, when the Ukrainians had reached the limit of their offensive ability in Kharkiv and the Russians had retreated to strong defensive positions, the Ukrainians launched their long-proclaimed Kherson offensive. During the unsuccessful, early phase, of the Kherson offensive, the Ukrainians had destroyed all the main Russian logistics bases in Kherson oblast, and then they destroyed all the main supply and escape routes, such as bridges and railroads; now the Russians realized that they would have to fight like the devil just to evacuate their remaining troops. In the end, the Ukrainians did not even have to attack. The Russians totally evacuated the right bank of the Dniper River, including Kherson City, which was the Ukrainians main goal. The Ukrainians are employing a similar tactic now. By making small, focused, attacks in specific areas across the whole front, the Ukrainians are again stretching Russian forces and distracting Russian attention from the place where they intend to attack. Right now the Ukrainians are again destroying Russian logistics, supply and escape routes and forcing Russians to defend places they really don't want or need. Before, it was Russian elite airborne formations that were ground down fighting in unimportant areas of Kherson away from the key locations; now, it is the Wagner Army that has been ground down fighting for the unimportant town of Bahkmut. They have been so weakened that they had to be removed from combat. Pregozhin's abortive mutiny cannot have helped the Russian military maintain its focus against the Ukrainian army. None of this is to say that the upcoming Ukrainian main-blow against the Russians will be as successful as their earlier efforts. However, it has not been going too slow, or too weak, or too costly. We won't be able to make a judgment until the Ukrainians do strike their main blow with the dozen or so brigades heretofore held in reserve, that were created with Western weapons and training. That main blow cannot be too long delayed but it is too early to say that it has already failed.

Guy fails to contextualize the entire story; UAF didn't take Kherson in the classic counteroffensive sense, like some big battle Faaaaaaar from it. There was no counteroffensive. There was no battle. The "Kherson Counteroffensive" is/was a lie. Its the Ghost Of Kiev of counteroffensives Russia withdrew all their forces and Kyiv took over an empty plot of land- bar the few stubborn residents that didn't want to leave (even tho Russia spent weeks warning them)

Hopefully they have enough forces to strike that main area at that point. Their new elite soldiers and brigades are already taking big losses in these small skirmishes and each proving is proving very costly.
@dembojon

@@mrt2215 So far, the Ukrainians have not used their new armored brigades. They have sat in reserve, waiting for a breakthrough. The Ukrainians have been using the same units that were in combat last year. They have some new vehicles, weapons and other equipment, and the Ukrainians have been allowing them regular rest breaks. It is not the new units that have suffered the casualties.

Ugh the images of desperate Afghans clinging to that plane in a feeble attempt to save themselves, is hard to see. What a disaster Afghanistan was and the pull out even worse. But Ukraine is not Afghanistan and Zelenskyy is not Ashraf Ghani. However the suffering of the Afghan men and women who now live under Taliban rule, who trusted in their future and risked their lives to help western troops, must not be forgotten or abandoned. This shame must not be repeated in Ukraine. We must follow through and see it to the end in an intelligent and ethically based manner.

In Afghanistan, the US **was** Russia-- literally. Russia had already fought and lost a war there before, and it helped end the USSR. Big nations make idiotic mistakes like Russia is making right now-- but in the U.S., we are living with the consequences of two idiotic wars. A lot of the division and danger in our country today comes from traumatized ex-military who have access to weapons, and who are PISSED about the pointlessness of the wars they fought in. It happened after Vietnam and it's happening now. So let's not pretend we're as virtuous as Ukraine, a nation fighting for its own survival. In truth, we're doing the least we can do-- which is probably enough.

@@BarrySlisk Exactly that. The pullout indeed was a disaster and in part caused this adventurism by Russia and more militance by China, but that said, the Afghanis sadly just reverted back to the norm w/o a presence to prop it up. Twenty years is enough time to give to that cause, even though there were mistakes in not involving our countries populaces in Afghanistan's success. There would have been a better chance that way, but still, nothing guaranteed given the population that the US/NATO had to work with. Most non-Wester critics really aren't mad we went in. They could care less. They're mad we didn't keep it and left.

Hugs, greetings, fist bumps, jokes, constructive criticism, fun feedback. I translated a brilliant book on this. It's called "The Culture Code" by Daniel Coyle. I started translating it when the war started and it was incredible to watch Ukrainians do EXACTLY what the book said. It was as if they were following it, step by step! The sad thing is your average person certainly in Europe supports and wants to see it through to the end standing side by side with Ukraine. Yet we all wonder if our governments see this is the same light. Ukraine should never fear loss of support but many Governments in the West are less than equivocal in this direction. Further proof that Governments are not for the people but for a select few that truly benefit. Stand by Ukraine. Lets see this through until Russia is defeated.

While not all countries support Ukraine, the extent of the support that they got and continue to get is breathtaking…
