Zelda Music Theory

Link's Awakening, although not composed by Koji Kondo, includes several references to themes like the Zelda 1 Overworld theme from the NES, the Opening, uses Dorian mode and the bVI chord, and many other cool music effects.
In this video, I go through the Opening (Sword Search), Ballad of the Windfish, and Tal Tal Heights.

The melody of Ballad of the Windfish is referenced in the botw Hyrule Castle theme, but changed from 4/4 to 5,5,6,5. Which is just so sick

Link's Awakening is my favorite Zelda game. The music alone carries so much emotion in it that I cried at the end and now any time I hear the Ballad of the Windfish. Thank you for covering this wonderful game, love the analysis! But favorite song has to be remake version of the Face Shrine.

What is so strange to me is the mislabelling of Tal Tal Heights. The music that plays in the area called Tal Tal Heights is the standard overworld theme. The super cool song (one of the best in the series) plays in the Tal Tal *Mountain Range*. I don't understand why everyone gets that wrong.

Link’s Awakening is, to me, the pinnacle of top-down Zelda. The Gameboy versions hold up surprisingly well, but the Switch version is an incredibly faithful remake that is perfect for newcomers to the game. Whichever version of the game you play, you’ll be glad you played it.

I think Kozue Ishikawa specifically wrote Tal Tal Heights, and this was their first video game score so that's insane, knocked that out of the park. This was also Minako Hamano's first game and she wrote Ballad of the Wind Fish. I think she went on to absolutely rock Metroid's soundtracks and wrote Ridley's Theme.

Having played 3 versions of this game (Original, DX, Remake) play the remake. You'll thank yourself later. The inventory management in the original and DX version are terrible. Switch (with it's extra buttons) streamlined it and made it much less frustration.

I'm currently playing this one (Switch version) and I'm really stunned by this game musics. They went insane for a gameboy game back in the day and the orchestrated version is even more crazy. Ballad of the Windfish has such a wonderful melody that stucks in the head for days, but the sick rythm of Tan Tan Heights set its place as one of my favourites tracks ever

If you haven’t played this game, I highly recommend it. I can’t speak to whether the orchestrated version is better than the original, though. I played the game on my OG GameBoy. I don’t even remember buying the game; I must have gotten it along with the other games I got when I bought the GameBoy from someone in my class. I didn’t actually _play_ Link’s Awakening until the early 2000s while riding the bus back and forth to work. But the story in this game hits hard. “Is [The Ballad of the Windfish] supposed to be happy or sad?” Yes. IYKYK.

Play both!! The orchestral versions are nice *but* I think you should listen and compare all the originals to the Switch music. My only major gripe is they changed Tail Cave too much. Also...wish you showcased the overworld theme from this game, it's got its' own unique twist to it.

I think one of the best parts about link's awakening is the tonal shift in dungeon music once the truth about the island is revealed to link. Up to that point, most of the dungeon music brings forth a sense of adventure and mystery. Then you get to the face shrine, and the music shifts to a melancholic repeating rhythm, as if link himself is repeatedly grappling with the horrors about what his quest's conclusion will eventually have on the island. The Manga made for the game best exemplifies this imo.

You may need to revisit this game after you play it ;) Once you know the weight of the Ballad of the Windfish. For example, looking at how Marin sings it and how that compares to all the instruments together- and how the song builds through the game.

You gotta play this one brother. I’ve commented on your stuff a lot since the beginning. This was my first Zelda game, I played it in black and white on a gameboy pocket in 1997. Very important to me. One of the most beautiful games ever made. Can’t recommend enough. I 100%’d the remake in 3 days when it came out. Remake is worth playing but you gotta play the original first. Color version is cool especially if you don’t have original hardware to play it on. The b&w version looks great on real gameboy hardware though. Anyways do yourself a favor and play it. R&d1 flavor with Kazumi Totaka as sound director. I could keep going. There’s a lot that remains unsaid about this game but more and more people are realizing it’s truly genius. The remake also managed to maintain a 90’s feel, at times even using textures that are reminiscent of OoT, like on the item menu, imo.
@treefroggy
@treefroggy Ай бұрын
During this time R&D1 was directly satirizing and parodying EAD with Wario and Zelda. This is the most unique Zelda game by merit of its direction and influence. And yet I feel they did it better. The opening cinema alone is exemplary of this. Directed by a studio ghibli artist, they brought a cinema like experience to gameboy.

It's crazy, I wrote this game off as a kid just because we never played it. Now I'm hearing people consider it Zelda 4. And the music is actually insanely good. Intricate, emotional, folded into the gameplay, etc.

Link's Awakening felt like it belonged on the same console as LTTP, not Zelda 1, it shouldn't have been possible on the Game Boy, and it took some software wizardry to make it happen. Same applies for the music (although not quite as crazy as the Pokemon TCG Game Boy soundtrack). The Switch version is a beautiful rendition, even more complex and a great homage to the original.
