If people like this video, I'd love to make similar sort of videos in the future. They're a weird mix between tier lists and traditional Top Tens that I can make for a whole load of franchises where the games are all over the place in terms of quality. Metroid's a good series to look over and I know there's more out there.

You're right about Samus oozing character in Dread. Everyone talks about how badass she is when she walks into Kraid's bossroom, ready for anything, then sees him and relaxes before popping a charge shot in his mouth like it was just another Tuesday.

My favorite example outside of being a total boss in the boss battle cutscenes is when she first meets Quiet Robe and keeps her arm cannon trained on him for over a minute as he’s talking because the last strange Chozo she ran into choked her out and stole most of her toys.

Mostly agree with the placements. Given Time, I believe Dread can climb even higher, but there's no denying the impact both Prime & Super Metroid has had on the franchise, and even the GBA's efforts with Zero Mission & Fusion are absolutely deserving of hanging with the best the Metroid Series has to offer.
@JamesWVanFleet

I think you could make a plausible case for "Super," "Prime," "Echoes," "Zero," or "Dread" being the best of the series, and that some goddamn amazing quality control.
@StormsparkPegasus
@StormsparkPegasus 2 жыл бұрын
@@JamesWVanFleet Yeah, I would not be mad if ANY of those were picked as best. They all have qualities that make them extremely good. I tend to lean towards Super and Prime. Super just because it was WAY ahead of its time when it came out, and it achieved what it did on hardware that is VERY limited by today's standards. Yes, Dread is a better game in almost every aspect, but it's 27 years newer, on MUCH more modern hardware, so the comparison isn't really fair. Prime took the series into 3D, and proved all the detractors wrong, by being one of the best games of all time. Zero Mission was a fantastic remake, and the fact that you could play it on the go made it even more amazing at the time.

Super Metroid and Prime**
@syferz

@@StormsparkPegasus I think Super is a bit stiff, if it controlled as well as Dread does, it would easily be the best in the series, however it is so good that it will often take the top of these lists until people stop making them, but I do think Dread and Prime are at the top of this list, with Super Metroid falling a bit to 3rd because of limited hardware, much like NES's Metroid falls so far back in this list because of it's controls and limited hardware. Having said all of that, I still think Super is a 10 and a remake will likely put it on top again, simply because it has an atmosphere that is still unmatched IMO.
@StormsparkPegasus
@StormsparkPegasus 2 жыл бұрын
@@syferz I agree, I think Dread is a better game than Super. But with Super I also take into account when it came out, and the system it came out on. Hardware was MUCH more limited then, which dramatically curtailed what the developers could do. Super was an amazing achievement for its time.

I think this is a pretty solid list, my main point of contention being Prime 2. I feel like that game has some of the best pacing of any Metroid game, and feels more like a world than most other games (especially Prime with a tropical jungle being a short hike away from a snowy tundra). The combat both in boss fights and in normal enemies is so creative and confident, and the dark worlds feel like a true test of player resolve. You can heal in bubbles but it will take a while if you want to play it safe. It's just such an amazing game in my eyes and evolves on Prime's ideas perfectly.

Prime 2 has some of the best subtle worldbuilding in a game that I've ever seen. Personally I find Metroid Prime 1 more fun to play but 2 I find to be the objectively better game with the exception maybe being ammo for beams. It's the same scenario for Majoras Mask and Ocarina of time for me.

Prime 2 is my favorite Metroid game overall for how well it builds its world, not just through main narrative, but also on the backlore. It took me a couple of playthroughs to realize what the hell Agon Wastes was even supposed to be, and made me appreciate the area that I previously didn't appreciate at all. That goes for a lot of things in that game that I didn't necessarily taste as much in Prime 1.

@sadscientisthououinkyouma1867
@sadscientisthououinkyouma1867 Ай бұрын
It is better, in fact it is at least in the top half of Metroid games. The biggest complaint people have is with the game's story, and the largest reasons people give for the story being bad are just outright false. On top of this the complaint is frankly silly, when has anyone ever once factored story into a Metroid review? Maybe I was asleep but I completely missed where back around Prime 3 and Other M people talked about the amazing story of Super Metroid, except I didn't miss it because nobody talked about it precisely because in Metroid the story is an excuse for cool shit to happen. That aside let's tackle some issues people took with the Other M story. "It assassinated Samus's character"- This is just false, you literally don't have any idea of Samus's character prior to this game as the story didn't outline it. The closest we can get to this is the manga, which was untranslated at the time of Other M's release and Samus is 100% in-line with that Samus. "Muh Ridley Fear when Samus already fought Ridley, this is character assassination"- This is a half-truth, yes Samus was afraid of Ridley but in the manga where Samus is more emotional this provides a perfectly common trope by which Other M's interpretation falls. Looking at the games Chronologically Ridley is dead by Other M, he is 100% confirmed dead. This means that all the time Samus has spent staying strong to fight Ridley she can finally let her guard down, she doesn't need to put on the tough act anymore and can properly go through her emotions related to her Ridley trauma. Then as she faces the stresses of losing many people she knows personally and potentially Adam whom she respects, she runs into a new Ridley. Is it a trope to let one's guard down and be shocked? Sure it is, and it is the best explanation rather than it being a character assassination as it is in-line with the manga. "Muh Samus submitting to authority, sexist game"- Samus literally always submitted to authority given it was good authority, which given their past Adam 100% was. Samus is a bounty-hunter not some immoral savage that has an issue with authority, the fact some even took issue with this is concerning. I can keep going, but basically all the major complaints are dead wrong about the story and most can be resolved by using the fan-patch that fixes the horrendous localization errors. There's a reason why Other M had better initial sales than Prime 3 in Japan, and its because Other M actually is a good game. Before anyone attacks me in the comments, go actually play the game, the US sales numbers dictates that the vast majority of KZfaq commenters haven't played it. Then after playing it, maybe don't get your opinion from KZfaqrs.

Fusion was also my first Metroid and I think it is a great starting point in the series, as the linearity really helps you understand the core concepts of the games. Unpopular opinion: Metroid Prime 2 was imo the best Metroid game with both Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 1 very close on a 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Don't get me wrong, I love this franchise and especially these 3 games can be considered as some of the best games of all time. But MP2 did one thing the best of all the Metroid Games: ATMOSPHERE. I'm a huge fan of great atmosphere in games and MP2 absolutely nailed it. From the creepy "Aliens" like opening with all the dead space marines all the way to the climatic 3rd battle against Dark Samus while the dark dimension was about to collapse.. The atmosphere was of the charts. You absolutely dreaded to enter the dark dimension and not only because of the great and creepy atmosphere, but because said atmosphere could actually kill you! So it started to invoke the feeling of dread and MP2 at some points almost played and felt like a Sci Fi horror game. Truly a stroke of genius by the developers (although some critics and fans hated the dark dimension) But every part of it was done to perfection.. The eerie music, extremely though enemies at certain points and the constant danger adding to the horror feel of the game. And Light Aether wasn't devoid of great atmosphere either btw. Especially Torvus Bog and Sanctuary Fortress were beautiful and extremely wel made designwise. Imo its one of the best games ever made and sadly criminally underrated.

You can no longer control how high your jump is, wall jumps and bomb jumps are now useless, and overall you just do not have the control over Samus that you have in Super, one of a million reasons why Fusion has nowhere near the replayability and is a complete non-entity for speedrunning compared to Super. Fusion does several things really well, but its dumbed down controls are not one of them. Super and Dread have two of my favourite core control schemes in gaming once you change a few buttons in Super (X to select missiles, Y to shoot, A to run, B to jump) and they’re for completely different reasons. If I judge Super by what makes Dread’s so good, then it’s clunky and too easy to lose momentum, if I judge Dread’s by what makes Super’s so good, it’s dumbed down and has nowhere near as many options.

Well, the trick with super Metroid is to play pressing the run button the whole time
@clemandax9242
@clemandax9242 2 жыл бұрын
a) there’s a run button, use it b) holding the A button for different amounts of time results in different jumps, giving you more control over Samus than any other game in the series except maybe Dread (in different ways) If you know both of these, and truly get a proper feel for them, then you can move way faster than any other game, do more organic and fun sequence breaks than any other game. Super Metroid’s controls are something that you master, and once you do its replay value is unparalleled; that’s why it’s one of the titans of speedrunning. The only thing that the GBA games’ controls have over Super’s is pressing R to equip missiles. Fusion’s controls are dogshit with no depth because of the dumbed down jump, nerfed wall jump and other things, Zero Mission’s atmosphere is dogshit compared to both Super and NEStroid and has very slightly more boring controls than Super because of the one-size-fits-all jump. One can argue about whether the simpler GBA controls are better, but I don’t see how anyone could deny how powerful Super’s atmosphere and art direction is: the only 2D game after it that can compete is Fusion and at some points AM2R. Also Super has one of the best endings in gaming (along with Metroid II/AM2R) Put it this way, Super is the only game in the series where something like Super Metroid Rotation would be remotely possible

I agree with a lot of this, but... the atmosphere and music? Really? I found the soundtract to be extremely forgettable, and the atmosphere sorely gampered by how unoriginal the zone's conceptual themes were and how much they bled into each other, especially with large sections of each of the zones given over to emmi rooms, all with the same architecture & soundscape. In particular, the game is sorely lacking in a tonal escalation towards the end. Nothing like Tourian in 1 or 3, or the final areas of SR-388 in 2, with their dramatic increase in tension leading into the last fight. And that's to say nothing of what a mood kill 'Adam' is. The mechanics of ZDR's world design are pretty fantastic, especially with how many compelling sequence breaking opportunities are built into it. This combined with how much of a joy it is to just move samus around through the world is really quite remarkable. But the aesthetic & conceptual design, imo, could really stand to be punched up bit next time around.

Just a broad observation here from someone who has never played a Metroid game at all. Sometimes things that are considered "masterpieces" or the greatest of all time are because of when they came out. Take The Beatles. I can appreciate their music and definitely hear the influence it's had on the industry but listening with 2021 ears I've heard better. No one can take away what they did but it's hard to appreciate them on that level not growing up in that time period or with them being my first exposure. It's the same with games. I'm sure you've experienced that formula and what made Super Metroid did but done better over the years. It's the same with movies. If you watch Citizen Kain you'd be underwhelmed. It's not until you learn about how that movie broke all the rules and it's impact at the time that you'd appreciate it as "greatest of all time" Long story short, it was one of if not the first of it's kind and people usually hold that stuff in higher regard than it typically warrants.

Very fair statements from both of you. I too can see some age in Super, but for me, and many other fans, it still plays very well, and the quality of which the game is in considering it came out in 1994 is still really impressive. It's not perfect, but it's very hard to imagine what would happen if the game was "updated" for modern gaming. Dread and Fusion are my favorites. I think Dread just plays much better than any of the other games, I especially love the Flash Shift which just feels awesome. Echoes is my favorite 3D Metroid and Dread is my favorite 2D one. I think Dread does combat and difficulty so much better than the other 2D games, that and the great feel of the traversal mechanics is why I love it. The bomb jumping, the slide, the speed booster, the flash step and the shinespark all feel amazing. I also think Prime 3 is underrated, the phazon/corruption mechanics are great for risk/reward during combat, especially on hypermode difficulty. The environments are beautiful as well.

I fully agree with the number one choice being super metroid. I actually think Super Metroid may even be the best Super Nintendo game ever made as well. It actually came out 6 years after I was born, however I played the game much later in like the year 2000 or something. I've played it quite a number of times since then as well. And yes I very highly enjoyed Metroid prime quite a lot as well when that game was new. I enjoyed the multiplayer on Metroid prime 2, but they really should have fixed that fatal flaw where if you kill yourself you don't lose a point. Sometimes my friends and I would purposely jump off a cliff just to make sure the opponent doesn't score a point on us

Thank you! I thought dread was too easy, the story was too bare. The final boss was amazing, but Raven beak was killed off just after his introduction, which sucks since he was hinted at in the last game, showed up twice in dread and then died. They could have made him more important to the plot and had him build this massive army and had been this big threat that spanned through an epic story in multiple future games. But no, he just showed up and died. I honestly thought fusion and super were better. And as a sequel to fusion, I was pretty upset that they didn't continue the corrupt federation plot and also made Samus magically friends with them again. Other M wasn't perfect, but it had a lot more going for it. I honestly think the only reason why dread is so hiped is because it's the first hd metroid game, the first metroid game in three years and the first console metroid game in over a decade.

Travelling to multiple planets, using your gunship to solve puzzles, incorporating other hunters and Federation allies into your progress, making the end game key collection quests actually fun, and in my opinion the best boss fights in the series (at least before Dread was released). Most impressive of all it has the best controls of any Wii game that doesn't use Wii Motion+. Otherwise it was a great list and I agree with most every point you made. I also would put Super at the top but Prime 1, Dread, and Zero Mission are all close behind.

At first I wanted Dread higher, but I think that’ll have to happen after the “new game hype” has died down and we better gauge how it compares to other entries, but currently it is in a perfectly fitting spot on the list. I agree with your choices in the top 5 and statement that they are all top tier, but would rank them different. 5. Super Metroid - amazing game but sometimes controls can be finicky and wish had more boss fights. 4. Zero Mission - improved the Zebes missions with mini/additional bosses added and better controls. Really like the epilogue in the ruins as well. 3. Fusion - this was my first Metroid game so might be nostalgia but love it. It is more linear but that’s the only detractor. Gameplay is great, tons of boss fights, good atmosphere with your weaker state and the SA-X to add fear and enjoyed the story. 2. Metroid Dread - Perfected 2D Metroid. Gameplay is so fluid, has good exploration and atmosphere while remaining epic. Great story and awesome conclusion to the current storyline and some of the best boss fights in the series. 1. Prime - First foray into 3D was top notch and nailed the Metroid feel in atmosphere and sound design, great gameplay, and fun boss fights. Future consideration might put Dread on top because of Prime’s sometimes frustrating, and time consuming, backtracking.

I seriously can't argue with this ranking, especially the top 5. A bunch of stellar games up there. My favorite Metroid game, hell my favorite game of all time is Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. The reason I like it more is because it has better level design than Prime 1 (yes I said it, Prime 1 has a shit ton of backtracking after almost every single upgrade you get. Got the Boost Ball? Great, now go back all the way to the Landing Site and get Space Jump. Got it? Now go back to Phendrana and get that Wave Beam. Got the Spider Ball? Cool, now go all the way back to Chozo Ruins and get the Ice Beam, and now go back to Phendrana to get Gravity Suit and then back to the Downed Frigate and so on.) It also has some of, if not the best bosses in the series (except for Spider Guardian on the original GC) and it feels more challenging. The ammo might seem like a negative, but it really isn't - you can just shoot crates/any other storage material to get the opposite ammo and you can expand them too, it makes you strategize more, but that might be more subjective. The only thing it doesn't do better than Prime 1 is the variety of environments. Sure Sanctuary Fortress is one of the best levels in the franchise, and Torvus Bog is cool but other than that it really doesn't have much. I'd say Prime 1 might be more appealing to casual audience, while Prime 2 is for people who want a challenge.

I would swap prime 1 & 2 in their rankings but overall this is a solid list. Prime 2 doesn't make sense without the sequel context, it's probably pretty alienating to people who didn't play the first. The upped difficulty, harrowing atmosphere & a lot of the level design cues taken from Fusion to make you feel tense & powerless are a real love letter to the fans who wanted a continuation of the first game, though I get that it's not the most well rounded standalone game. Imo it has the best art direction in the entire series, doubled with it being a rare design departure from Super Metroid. It's a stunner in 1080p, the native GameCube completely butchers the environmental textures. I wish that prime 3 had continued on that dark direction prime 2 had gone, because 3 wasn't the right game at all

I can't help but disagree with Prime 2's placement, I guess it depends on what you really liked and disliked in Prime 1. For me, I always felt that the morph ball was underutilized, all the beams other than Plasma became used for killing specific weapon-immune enemies and opening doors by the end, and there was a ton of horrendous backtracking that had you crossing through Magmoor about ten times too many in a single playthrough (and yes, Backtracking is a staple, but the way Prime 1 did it was a slog imo). Prime 2, frankly, fixed all of those problems while giving me a game that felt more engaging and challenging, for that it easily soars above Prime 1 in my eyes. Prime 2 is my favorite Metroid game, it just doesn't get enough love

I do think prime 2 did have some improvements but it also did take a few steps back. The progression does not feel as smooth and the dark Faizon does obstruct and break the flow of the general exploration in many areas. The areas such as the caverns and ice areas felt more polished and immersive in prime 1. The dark Faizon puzzles where fun at times but also not very rewarding and hindrance other times. I think prime 2 is a good game but it goes slightly more steps back than forward. I think prime 1 does more things right which makes it the better Metroid game overall
@bakubread9308
@bakubread9308 2 жыл бұрын
@@H-TownGamer I disagree, the progression in Prime 1 is SIGNIFICANTLY worse. No game should lead you to the end of an area (ie; the Phazon Mines) just to tell you that you need to go all the way back up and cross the map to get an upgrade that is required for progression. The Phazon Mines alone do that for the X-Ray visor AND the Plasma Beam. Prime 2 tells you to go to another area for an upgrade very few times, and when it does there's always an elevator that leads directly to that area nearby. I will agree that Prime 1's areas were more aesthetically pleasing, but that's very subjective.

My (probably very controversial) ranking of the Metroid games I have played and finished 6. Metroid 5. Metroid prime 3 4. Super Metroid 3. Metroid Dread 2. Metroid Prime 1. Metroid Prime 2 I know my placing of Super is low but I see myself Loving Dread a lot, and the first prime games mean a lot to me.
