Damn I hate to do this to you but Samthepenguinman is a pretty secure password, especially compared to that jumble of symbols you suggested as an alternative. At least, when it comes to someone brute forcing your password. longer passwords made up of simple English words are much more secure than shorter passwords that _look_ complex to us humans. there's a great xkcd on the subject, I'll edit this comment when I find it. EDIT: just Google XKCD Password Strength, for the comic.
@maxybaer123
@maxybaer123 6 жыл бұрын
yes thats for brute forcing but noone is going to be able to bruteforce a 12 character password with modern tech and samthepenginman is insecure because its both related to the game and entirely lowercase words
@e.mentha
@e.mentha 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but modern brute force software usually uses dictionaries, and some of it is capable of combining different words from dictionary (actually there are more features, like appending numbers at the end), making passwords made up of simple words even less secure. So it all depends on what hacker is actually doing.
@Jesse__H
@Jesse__H 6 жыл бұрын
both of these responses are solid points. I hadn't even considered that the pw was related to the game itself lol I retract my correction. GOOD DAY SIR.
@dj26792
@dj26792 6 жыл бұрын
@@Jesse__H actually you're still mostly correct, using one based on the game doesn't work but the fact that modern dictionary attacks exist is why this password is strong. A modern dictionary brute force attack will go through most 'strong' passwords very quickly because people end up using a word with character substitutions or making it too short. Using a sequence of words works because even if they know what method you're using to generate a password there are lots of words so brute forcing it will take an impossibly long time.
@FinalSentinel
@FinalSentinel 6 жыл бұрын
Good replies up above. I suggest reading up about password entropy calculations to all that are interested. The agile bits blogs are pretty solid for a start, along with Scheier's blog. Also note that with the xkcd password example, you should always put spaces between the words, as doing otherwise reduces the entropy. Suffice it to say that I believe almost everyone would agree the second password is more secure than the first (it certainly has greater entropy).

But what if you forget the Password for your Dashlane Account? And you have your Dashlane account's password saved in Dashlane. So you have to check Dashlane for your dashlane password but since you dont know your dashlane password you cant use dashlane to check for your dashlane password. (Would be Grim if Dashlane wouldnt have a Reset Password Option but thats a thing of the past ... right?)
@Techischannel
@Techischannel 5 жыл бұрын
What i am trying to say is: Just write them up on a piece of paper instead. Its equaly as secure if you store this piece of paper or the pieces of paper where nobody would look or alternatively lock it somehow. If you got an Enigma Machine On hand you can encrypt them ofcause. Or maybe encrypt your passoword in a Mathemeatical Followup thingy where you have a base 24 Mathemetical system and maybe 3 Password Mathematical Questions and in the correct solution is the order on where each of the solution parts is.
@Vaaaaadim
@Vaaaaadim 4 жыл бұрын
@@Techischannel I'm not a dashlane user, but to my understanding your dashlane account has a master password, they don't store it anywhere, if you lose/forget it you're screwed. Personally I had long ago generated a random 16-character password that I use for everything nowadays. Probably a bad idea because if one site or whatever stores passwords in plain text then it can be tested elsewhere, but eh.

Every Mistake We've Ever Made Pt. 2, "In our previous, Every Mistake We've Ever Made, video, we incorrectly stated that passwords are stronger with different cases and symbols. This apparently isn't true as all that makes a password stronger from people using bots to get in is the amount of characters you use. It doesn't matter what they are or whether or not you have numbers."

This assumes that attackers operate only using totally random guesses. In reality dictionary and rainbowtable attacks mean that a password made using only common words is very insecure.
@LzysGraphics
@LzysGraphics 6 жыл бұрын
Alexander but not many use a long password with simple words, they use random characters and numbers making up a word because that's what we've been taught to do. Most hackers are attempting to crack those types of passwords.
@nickwoodward819

@@aphenioxPDWtechnology pretty sure that computerphile video (with mike pound) specifically encourages the 4 word password combination shown in the xkcd comic. Samthepenguinman is poor because the individual words are related to the subject and are used relatively frequently, not because dictionary attacks exist
@teamcoltra
@teamcoltra 5 жыл бұрын
@@nickwoodward819 Honestly if he just used "Sam the penguin man" he would likely be good - against dictionary attacks and against people just familiar with the site. Dictionary attacks run through the dictionary with single words and then even replaces those words with different symbols. Lets say that the computer KNEW that the guy had used a 4 word string (which they wouldn't, but lets say that) it removes the entropy for how big the words are and removes the spaces entropy (which you could use Sam-the-penguin-man or Sam/the/penguin/man to add extra complexity against this weird very specific attack). But again this attacker KNOWS that it's 4 words separated by spaces with no special characters and the first letter is likely capitalized (and we will even say they know there isn't a period at the end). There are over 100,000 words in the English dictionary which means that there are 10,0000,000,000,000,000,000 different keys to try, in 2020 it's estimated a hacker with the most modern equipment will be able to do 17042497.3kps which means it would take 5867684661449.234 seconds or 185935.5591046 years 1859.35 centuries. The average adult has a vocabulary of about 20,000 words and I'm guessing about 18,000 of those words are common amongst all of us. We can even use a child's vocabulary based on subject matter and say that they use a dictionary of 5000 that also contains "Sam" "the" "penguin" "man" that's 625,000,000,000,000 possible keys based on the same kps that means it would take 36673029.134 seconds or 1.16 years to complete (with 2020 technology). This specifically knows Sam is capitalized removes the computation on spaces and knows there is no period at the end. That's a lot of information to have already on hand. Finally -- According to howsecureismypassword.net (a highly reputable source, referenced by krebs and others) E5@2sizUsJ@W would take 34,000 years to crack, but samthepenguinman would take 898,000 years to crack. The fact is Dashlane gave him a worse password.

@@teamcoltra yeah, i was agreeing that a 4 word password is secure. i was disagreeing with Vaes, who said it was insecure because it was 4 words, and then referenced the computerphile video. I said that if it was insecure for any reason (which i should've emphasised that i didn't think it was), it would be because the words used are relatively popular and not random - which does matter, as mention by the very same video he referred to: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abSahJyTmNbLeZs.html

Thank you so much for making a corrections video. I love it when educational channels actually feed you with accurate and scientifically accurate facts and statements. So many "educational channels" doesn't care if they get it wrong and they make clickbait thumbnails just to make more money. Infographics Show, Bright Side, Matthew Santoro, and many other are guilty of this crime. And since they make alot of videos about science, this makes them even more guilty.

No source claims that the USA has a greater LAND area (not total area) than China. The CIA World Factbook states that the USA's total area is larger, but that's because they started including coastal and territorial waters for the USA (and no other country) so that it could be given third place over China. China is larger, no question.

I love your videos regardless of small inaccuracies. Can I make a suggestion for a future video? Countries that box above their weight. Not a land mass or GDP thing but a little more difficult to quantify, Which country has had the greatest impact on the world per capita, I think that would be some thing you could tackle. Keep up the good work!

Sam, you say that in Hendaye, if changing trains to go to Spain, you can use the small Spanish station in the car park. That's true, but if you are trying to get to a RENFE (Spanish National Railways) station, you can't do that, as the station in Hendaye is run by the separate narrow gauge Eusko Trenbideak (Basque Railways) with a completely separate rail and station network
