Obviously this has Fire & Blood spoilers, so if you care about that don't watch this.
Also you will note that I am often bad at saying things, so how do I have a channel? Who knows
Some of these kings were really really bad. Also some were hard to rank. Jaehaerys II has very little written about him

@@okdude8215 Jaehaerys was a perfectly good father? He had like one rogue child which was a very horny daughter. Pretty much all his son's and heirs were set to be perfect kings, they just all died to things that were out of his control. Also he didn't pick Viserys as his heir, he called a great council of lords to do it as that was the most stable choice. Also keep in mind when Viserys was chosen as the heir he was the current rider of Balerion the black dread, that's a symbol of strength. Viserys was a good king who ruled a peaceful and financially stable realm. Perhaps not betraying his daughters trust and love wasn't a great move but it wasn't the sign of a terrible king. His son Aegon literally didn't even want to be king, he was quietly manipulated by his mother. Viserys suffered from being trusting of his wife and council, that's not a bad king either. Aegon was a great conqueror but mid king. He left the situation with the faith completely up in the air and at risk relying exclusively on his access to a super weapon he inherited. More importantly of his two sons that he raised one was the weakest king Westeros had seen till perhaps the current Tommen Baratheon and the other was a cruel vindictive psychopath that nearly wiped out house Targaryen immediately. Jaehaerys fixed all the problems Aegon left unsolved and saved house Targaryen from the enormous fuckup caused by Aegon's sons Also for the record four dragons survived the dance and that's more than were alive during Aegon's conquest. The fact the remaining Targaryen's didn't seek to find them is due to the next kings trauma, completely nothing to do with Jaehaerys or Viserys

Good list, but I think Daeron II should be S Tier. He stabilized the realm after Aegon IV's disastrous reign; peacefully brought Dorne into the realm; had 2 sons who were both capable Kings, showing he was a good Father, and while the author states you would not want him in war, he successfully won the First War of the Blackfyre Pretenders, thus securing the most serious threat to a post-dragon Targaryen Household. Finally, he secured the loyalty of Brynden Rivers- the Bloodraven.

@@mappingshaman5280 I don't know if that was even a bad thing, if true. We do know very little about that time period; Aerys was more an absentee King which, lets be fair, is sometimes perfect for a realm. And what's far more important was that Aerys I was not a bad person; we have no evidence that he beheaded kittens or killing the poor for breathing without a permit. He was just a guy who liked books more than people and I am willing to say that Daeron gets credit for not turning any of his children into power-hungry lunatics. Which, in this realm, is practically Father of the Year.

I doubt you could credit Daeron II for the victory in the first Blackfyre rebellion. If anything, his reluctance to act against Daemon and being lax towards lords who were getting cozy with him caused the rebellion. One big flaw of Viserys II in my opinion was how he failed to raise his son to become anything else than an incompetent, corrupt, tyrant. He might have been a good administrator but he failed as a father and, as such, was partially responsible for everything that happened during Aegon IV's reign.
@BryndenNehir
@BryndenNehir Жыл бұрын
He was said to be the second coming of the Conciliator, who similarly had terrible relationship with his own children. The downside of being deep into politics is that you have little time for family. Viserys was the center of it all especially during the time he served as Hand to three ineffective kings. He's a lot like Tywin in that regard. Hell, both got done in by their son too.

Daeron I. was the first post-dragons king. Targaryen martial prestige relied on the dragons and with them gone, Daeron I had to something to reestablish it. Otherwise, the Lords of Westeros would have rebelled sooner than later against the dragonless Targaryens and ended the rule of his dynasty. That is what his conquest of Dorne accomplished, hence his line "You have a dragon. He stands before you." He showed that his dynasty did not need living superweapons to conquer.

I will add on that Daeron II recognized that he wasn't a good military leader or a badass in anyway, which is why he gave the title of Protector of the Realm to his sons, who were badasses. Another thing is that Jaehaerys II actually handled the war of the Ninepenny Kings pretty well. He recognized that it was dangerous to let Maelys gather support and invade Westeros so he launched a preemptive strike on the Stepstones to stop them and keep the war contained on the Stepstones instead of having bloodshed occur on Westerosi shores. He even wanted to lead the war himself but was talked down from it by his Hand.

I agree that Jaehaerys the Wise is the best overall King. Though Viserys II was probably the most capable administrator and politician, and a really great statesman. On a more personal note, I think Aegon III was a pretty good ruler overall. While he was not the most charismatic and suffered from a serious case of depression, he genuinely seemed to want the best for the realm and I think his peaceful reign was really needed after the bloodbath that was the Dance of the Dragons. Plus, while his sons were very flawed, neither of them was anywhere near as bad as Aegon the Unworthy was, so there is that.

Daeron I "the young dragon" is easily my fav targ. Yeah he was only interested in glory but at the same time he never really had a chance to rule, as soon as he was crowned (at like 16 iirc) he said "fuck it time to do what Aegon I couldn't" and 'successfully' conquered the unconquerable kingdom without the use of any dragons. Awesome video! What I dont understand though is that you would rank Rhaenyra below Aegon II? They should both be on the same step, and for sure she is not worse than Maegor the Cruel, who not only took the throne over his nephew, the rightful heir, but killed said nephew and married his widow. Also poor Aegon III. He went through so many horrible things it is amazing he didnt turn into a mad king.
@jakebishop7822

Just realized I forgot to respond to this. Spoilers for what will be House of the Dragon Basically I think that while Rhaenyra obviously was the rightful queen, she seems to have not fought the war competently. I think her side got in 4 battles where they were outnumbered in the air, with most of them being back to back. That should not happen, she had massive air superiority, and to every battle except one, only one dragon went, and one of those was against her orders. When you outnumber someone, the point is to try and fight 1 dragon with 3 or 4 at a time, not to give Vhagar 4 1v1s. Aside from that when she ruled she really seemed more focused on punishing everyone who was against her, and just kinda ignored that she was winning the war, she had not won the war, and kinda let her enemies regroup, while seemingly alienating as many people who were neutral as possible. Now, it is possible and likely I am being influenced by Fire and Blood being massively bias against Rhaenrya. Like they never seem to acknowledge that she obviously should be queen, and that Aegon II is clearly the person trying to userp. However, a lot of it is based on events that happened, and I tend to think that if Fire and Blood is directly lying about things that are kinda public knowledge, it is just useless as a fake history book. So I think even assuming that just the events that we think happened, happened, ish. That Rhaenrya was the rightful queen, but not a good queen. Aegon II totally could be worse though, he also sucks. Jaehaerys was turning in his grave

Good ranking. Aegon I would be S-Tier for me. The ack of law reform thing is a strike against him but he ruled for 36 years in a largely peaceful reign, except for the Dornish War. He basically allowed the kingdoms to govern themselves and allowed his sisters to govern the realm while making himself known to the realm to establish Targaryen authority. Great warrior, good diplomat, good delegator too. Aenys is definitely F-Tier. I feel bad for the dude but man he sucked. For me, I would put Maegor in C-Tier because even though he was a terrible person he ensured that House Targaryen was feared by both the nobility and the Faith. He burnt and torturered and executed so many nobles, peasants and Faith Militant that people were scared shitless. It allowed for Jaehaerys to assume power easier and for him to have more leeway in enacting his reforms. Jaehaerys I was S-Tier. The ideal king, even if he wasn't the best father. Him passing over Rhaenys laid the seeds for the Dance of the Dragons. Viserys I is interesting because you could put him in C-Tier or D-Tier for it was his dual decision to marry Alicent and designate Rhaenyra as heir despite having several trueborn sons that directly caused the Dance. But, his reign was probably the most peaceful of any Targaryen. Aegon II is F-Tier. The dude was a shitty person and a kinslayer who usurped the throne from his sister. The Dance also caused the extinction of the dragons, until Daenerys brought them back. Aegon III gets a bad rap. I would put him A-Tier. Him and Viserys did a great job stitching the realm back together and healing the wounds left by the Dance, without dragons too. The dude was also severely depressed and suffering from PTSD, yet was a competent king. Daeron I I would put D-Tier. He did what even Aegon I could not but the conquest of Dorne was undone by the end of his reign. If his Conquest of Dorne had been successful and he had ruled longer, maybe things would be different. He also made a terrible decision in leaving a Tyrell in charge of Dorne. Baelor I would get a D-Tier. A zealot and a nutjob. He did a great job in negotiating a peace with Dorne, though you could argue that he should have been harsher since his brother was assassinated under a peace banner. Jaime said it best - he should have just closed his eyes and screwed his sister. Viserys II only ruled for one year but he was ruling the realm far longer than that as Hand. I would put him S-Tier. Aegon IV - F-Tier. Even Henry VIII who Aegon is based on did a lot of good for England despite his faults. Aegon IV basically caused the Blackfyre Rebellion by legitimizing his bastards. Just a terrible person. Daeron II - Great king. S-Tier. He brought Dorne into the fold, besides the Blackfyre Rebellion his reign was peaceful. He was what the Targaryens needed after Aegon IV. Daeron's biggest fault is that he probably wasn't conscious enough of Westerosi hatred of Dorne, so he failed to realise that a lot of people would resent the favour he showed Dorne. He also like Jaehaerys I should've taken steps to present himself a warrior, which his sons later rectified. Aerys I - the definition of mid. We don't really know much about his reign. He was likely asexual which isn't a strike against him. C-Tier. Let Bloodraven essentially rule the realm. Maekar I - One of the most underrated kings. Despite being a warrior king, his reign was largely peaceful, except for the Peake Uprising which lead to his death. He is basically the Targaryen Stannis. A-Tier. Aegon V - Tough one to assess. He actually did give a shit about the smallfolk and tried to help them but he was resisted constantly by the nobility. He also wasn't strict enough with his children. You could argue the roots of Robert's Rebellion began during his reign. And the Tragedy of Summerhall did wipe out most of House Targaryen. I would put him B-Tier since all his reforms were undone by Tywin. S-Tier person. Jaehaerys II - Only ruled for three years. Decent person. Competent king. B-Tier. Aerys II - The Mad King. Started off good but gradually became batshit insane. He caused his dynasty to be deposed. F-Tier. Robert I - Besides the Greyjoy Rebellion, his realm was largely peaceful. But his inattention to his "truebon children" and his lack of interest in ruling as well as his overspending put him down to D-Tier. Joffrey I - Only ruled for one year but that one year was all war. And Joffrey himself was a horrible person. F-Tier. Tommen I - The current monarch. Shows a lot of promise. He needs to toughen up a bit and grow a backbone but he is shaping to be a good king. Too bad he's probably not long for this world.

Great list! Almost exactly how I would've ranked them. The only king I'd rank a tad lower is Aegon V. Hear me out. This is based on how good these kings would've been for the realm at the time and how well the respective monarch was received by the people. Now there's no denying Aegon V had good intentions and was a very considerate person when it came down to the small folk, but his efforts in redistributing the wealth were too extreme or at least too much in one go which is why many highborn disliked him so much. Then there's also the bit where he basically wanted to force his children to marry for political reasons while he himself still married out of love. A little bit hypocritical if you ask me. Needless to say even his children defied him on that front. All I'm saying is no matter how good your intentions are if you go about them too extremely you will encounter some backlash. He even thought at some point that the only way to get a proper say in matters again was to try and bring back dragons, which is the very thing thet led to his death at Summerhall. All the other kings in A tier by comparison have actively been able to solve or handle existing problems whilst Aegon V in trying too hard to solve certain things created more or different problems. And for that reason I'd personally rank him below Viserys 2. I'm still going back and forth on either High B-tier or low A-tier.

This is fair, because it is true that he was ineffective. However as one small counterpoint, I would say that we have to rank kings based on the resources they had, and Aegon V took over in a time when Targaryen's were quite weak. And while his policies did piss people off, they likely did actually meaningfully help a lot of people who will never make a history book, and didn't cause any major wars or anything. That being said, I may be bias here, just because I like him more

I'd rank Aegon V around B tier. I think he did a lot of good especially for the smallfolk. He could've been a bit stricter with his children; they all renounced their bethrothed for love causing minor problems with the families they were betrothed to. His selfless goals he had for the smallfolk were so ambitious for a King he resorted to ressurecting Dragons in order to make the Lords submit. If we assume Summerhall to be Aegon's doing, he caused one of the biggest tragedies in Targaryen history. This next part might be a stretch but hear me out. If he was scricter with his children in regards to their betrothed perhaps we would never have gotten Aerys II the Mad King. Aegon was very against incest for some reasons with his past but his second son Jaehaerys II ended up falling in love with his sister. Incest hasn't touched a King since Aegon the Unworthy. I can't help feeling like Jaehaerys marrying his sister maybe not caused Aerys to be mad but definitley made it more likely of happening. Overall though, good king.

I think Jaehaerys gets too much credit. He should've been the one that stood up and firmly established male preference primogeniture rather than MALE ONLY. Instead, he passed over Rhaenys and went to a different one of his sons instead. He CREATED the succession crisis, which led to the subsequent succession crisis when that heir died, which led to the subsequent succession crisis when Viserys died. All he had to do was say, you know what, my eldest son and heir only had one child, she was a woman, and thats totally fine. By skipping over her and basically codifying the "male only" rule, he CAUSED the dance of the dragons and ruin and fall of his own house because the civil wars ended up with all their dragons dying which is where their power ultimately came from. Everyone important was AGAINST passing over Rhaenys for the father of Viserys. His own wife was against it, the Velayrons were against it, the Baratheons were against it. It pissed off the most powerful families in Westeros. if he chose Rhaenys, she would've had the backing of House Targaryen, House Baratheon, and House Velaryon. The guy he chose instead also died before the king did, so by the time the king actually died and the crown passed to someone else, the rival would've been Viserys and he NEVER would've went to war to try to claim the throne for himself by killing his cousin. Daemon might have, but then again he may have respected the king's decision if the king never wavered from it. The second succession crisis really came about because the line of succession kept jumping around down different bloodlines. If that never happened, and stayed consistent with the eldest of the eldest, I don't think it would've ever been a problem. Rhaenys should've ruled as Queen after the death of Jaehaerys. The next best claimant was viserys, who wouldn't have started a civil war, and its unlikely Daemon would have either if their bloodline had never shot up the line of succession and then had been asked to step back down again.

Tbh most of what made one king rule well and another rule poorly was circumstance. Aegon V was clearly a better man and a better king than Jaehaerys I, who was as sexist as most characters and didn't really want to make major changes (his wife had to push him into outlawing the legalized rape of common women), but he had dragons. Aegon's ancestors killed their dragons, so his progressive reforms led to rebellions and almost certainly weren't enforced in most places, and Tywin Lannister undid them all 20 years later. If we just rank them by "Was there a lot of instability or not?" then Aegon V is mid-tier at best.

I think Baelor is a mixed bag of a king, he totally mended the rift with Dorne that Daeron caused, by releasing all of the Dornish hostiges, walking the deserts and jumping into the snake pit to save Aemon the Dragonknight really proved himself to Dorne and all of the 7 kingdoms. Whether or not you think the snake venom or the walk through the desert itself caused him to go crazy, regarless he went VERY crazy. Towards the end of his reign he made very erratic decisions that made the Lords uneasy like making kids/random people High Septon whenever the last one died. He locked up his sisters in the maidenvault, banned prostitution, and went on very long and taxing fasts to cleanse himself of lust. Right before his death, he was going to start a holy war with any of the non-beleivers of the Seven which include the North's old gods followers and the Iron Islands' Drowned God followers. It is even said that perhaps his hand, Viserys II, poisoned him to stop all of his madness and prevent these holy wars. He fathered no heirs because he was a septon which is forsaking his kingly duties. Some consider him as a amazing and holy king and reward him for his contributions to the faith, for forging a peace with Dorne, his mercy and his many acts of charity. Others consider him to be the weakest king and an overzealous fool. I think C tier is fair and B would be the highest I'd consider. Overall his realm was generally peaceful (with Viserys taking a good amount of credit for that imo), his extreme commitment to the Seven and forcing the religion upon all to the point of potential war cannot be overlooked.

Maegor is high C tier and maybe even low B tier. Yes, he was far from a great king (Killing Aegon, multiple wives, blood magic (that he probably was resurrected with himself) and executing people that worked for you are all bad signs), but the Faith needed to be smashed to pieces and a conflict with them was unavoidable and would happen sooner or later. In general, you want to ensure that religious people do not force their beliefs on everyone else and those people that cannot understand that religion is a private matter and not the law for the realm should be killed. Preferably as painful as possible. And because of his brutality the threat of the Faith Militant was smashed to pieces. Yes, The Faith Uprising did not fully end until the Conciliator brought peace to the Seven Kingdoms but this peace COULD NOT have been reached if the Militant was as strong as they were before Maegor's rule. They were so weakened by constant warfare that they had little choice but to adhere to Jaehaerys and reconcile to the Iron Throne. Because of harsh methods of Maegor the great lords learned to fear House Targaryen once more, as it takes fear of retribution to fully lead. If it weren't for the carnage and bloodshed that Maegor exacted during his short and brutal reign then future kings like Jaehaerys I and Viserys I would not have enjoyed such long and prosperous reigns. They still would have had to contend with the constant backbiting of rebellious lords and the Faith Militant for decades more, if the Dynasty even survived. State terrorism might be despicable, but it works great! He did what was needed to be done. Viserys C-tier is ok, but maybe a bit too generous. I would say low C-tier or even high D-tier, slightly above Robert Baratheon. He is inheriting a VERY stable realm from Jaehaerys but is indecisive and doesn´t really do anything but seems to most hope that problems will sove themselves. So sure - he's an okay king who made a really big mistake. But that mistake is big. Very Big. He single handedly created the greatest internal conflict of his family. And this conflict will have terrible consequences and make his house extremely weak in the future. He had many opportunities to solve this conflict. 1 - Name his brother Daemon the heir and name him his hand. 2- Name Rhaenyra heir and stay single (everyone with a brain should realize what would happen here if he gets a son from his new marriage) or 3 - Name Aegon heir and cast Rhaenyra away. Yet at very point, he did nothing and spent his time with wishful thinking. In short - he fucked up despite having the best starting position. At least Daeron took risks and was a great general... Rhaenyra is getting a bad rap from you here. Yes, she clearly had some issues, but remember - she was usurped and had to spend her "rule" in constant war. Sure, more leniency towards her enemies would have been good, but many of her problems stems from the Green coup - like not having any money for food, since they stole the treasury, which in turn led to protests and rebellion. So, she did not do a great job, but there are mitigating circumstances here. I would put her in High D-tier just below her father (and above Robert) and I would put Aegon in Low D-tier below Aenys. Neither of them wasn´t given a real chance as rulers of course, but sometimes life isn´t fair. Baelor I is F-tier and a religious idiot (The only 2 people worse than him on the job are Aegon IV and Aerys II (maybe Joffrey if we count the Baratheons)). "Peace with Dorne" sounds nice, but the reality is that he pardons the dornish for murdering his brother at a fucking peace conference which creates anti-dornish seeds that would later (after some heavy watering from Aegon IV) lead to Blackfyre Rebellion. He also throws his sisters in the Maidenvault because he is afraid of tits, did some book burning of things he didn´t like (hmmm, reminds you of certain people doesn´t it?), made useless appointments to High Septon 2 times, tried to replace ravens with doves, annulled his marriage to his sister-wife Daena (and thereby demonstrating to the realm that he had no intent of furthering the family line), insulted lords (like having them wash leper feet) and (of course) refused to sire an heir. If Viserys murdered him, then I say good riddance! Nothing he did worked and he should honestly have been strangled in the baby crib. Aerys I is mid D-tier. Aerys was an absentee bookworm, more devoted to the pursuit of prophecy and mystic knowledge than managing his kingdom. He kept royal forces concentrated close to King’s Landing, to prevent Bittersteel and the Blackfyres-in-exile, and left the west coast to handle the matter on their own, forcing Houses Stark and Lannister to ally to fight off the Ironborn. In feudalism, one of the chief obligations of the overlord is protection. Kings have large armies, and the threat of retaliation from an entire kingdom helped maintain peace. By refusing to fulfill his obligations, Aerys projected weakness from the top. He was also weak-willed and indecisive and made this (and other) errors out of fear. At least Maegor and Aegon II made a choice and went down swinging. I also hold his lack of sexual interest against him - few things are more important than siring an heir. Aerys II should also be F-tier (but ranked higher than Aegon IV). Piggybacking on Tywin is all nice but he got worse and worse throughout the years and getting his dynasty ousted is a big strike against him. Like Aegon IV he set the realm up for problems that Rhaegar would have had a hard time dealing with later, even if they had won the civil war. Otherwise, pretty accurate.

I too also hate Baelor, he was so intent in making the Faith happy, by extension, the Hightowers and Oldtown that he weakened the Targaryen line by making their Valyrian incest a bad thing, thus weaker blood of the dragon and weaker Targaryens at best after that

Maegor was terrible for the realm but probably one of the best kings for the Targaryen dynasty. They needed someone like him to solve the situation of faith once and for all. Who knows how blood magic would have behaved if family marriages had stopped. The dragonlords' obsession with incest is not unfounded. Jahaereys was great for the kingdom but by passing Rhaenys behind without establishing clear and fair succession laws he planted the seed for the dance, it doesn't matter if Viserys had never declared Rhaenyra heir because at some point this house would have an heiress and the council of 101 would be lifted up. What's worse is that as a Valyrian house it wasn't even their way.

Why would it be a bad thing that Aegon largely left existing laws in place? On the contrary, that was really smart, the reason why so many were ultimately willing to bend the knee to him and give up their crowns is because not much really changed. they mostly could continue ruling over their subjects the way they always had. Had he tried to "reform" Westeros like some boneheaded idealist his reign would be one big civil war against all the people he conquered.

@@ernestomartinez2710 there absolutely are. Basically during all of Viserys II's time as hand, the kings who ruled were either doing little, invading Dorne, making peace with Dorne, or being crazy. Because nothing bad happening, and doing nothing are 2 very different things. Viserys II in his 2 years was a very active king, who did plenty, to ensure that nothing bad happened. Aenys I did nothing, which caused a civil war, and the near collapse of the realm. The main one in a lower tier despite nothing really going horribly wrong was Baelor. But that is nothing going horribly wrong on a Kingdom wide scale, he was also completely insane, and only got away with it because the Hand of the King who he didn't appoint(Viserys II) did all the work
