The 2014 tone just hits differently. It borderline felt horror. Love all of them though. Had to see the New Empire twice.

*Kong:* *Skull* *Island* *(2017)* Finished a rewatch of Skull Island earlier this morning and it’s arguably the best movie in all of MonsterVerse. What was I thinking ranking it dead last? When I first saw it back in 2018 on Netflix, I guess I was too tired that I wasn’t in the mood for it. I completed it with a second viewing but didn’t think much of it or remembered it. I guess third time’s the charm because Skull Island has the best human cast in all of MV. This was before Brie Larson became the most hated actress in all of Hollywood and before Rachel Zegler gave her a run for her money only recently. We got hitters like Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly. I think John C. Reilly has the most likable human character in all of MV. How I see Skull Island is basically a Jurassic Park/World movie. Closer to Lost World because of the different groups stuck in this crazy island. Then toss in some Apocalypse Now/Platoon with the Vietnam War-like setting. But it’s really Jurassic Park meets PREDATOR (1987). You got a bunch of soldiers trying to fight these monsters in this jungle. You can argue Skull Island has better action scenes than any of the Jurassic movies and is better than every Jurassic movie except the 1993 one. And you can argue it has better action sequences than the original Jurassic Park because Kong would slaughter any dinosaur in that 1993 movie standing at 150 feet. We’ll favor Jurassic Park ‘93 strictly from our nostalgia. Seeing it today, it’s actually well paced. Perhaps only the beginning during the recruitment can feel a little slow. And I liked that Loki and Carol Danvers didn’t hook up in this movie. It’s too predictable and cliché. They left the romance out and it works better that way. The movie was less than 2 hours and it never felt it dragged by boring human characters like we see in most MV movies and Monarch. I forgot Bill Randa died in Skull Island. But it’s actually his fault that SLJ’s character and some of his men died. He was lied to. Nobody really knew what they were getting into. And I can’t fault Kong for attacking them considering he’s trying to protect the island. All the bombs were waking up the Skullcrawlers. Kong was simply protecting himself, his territory, and the people who worships him as a god. Skull Island still works without ever showing Kong much or if the big bad monster wasn’t Kong, the movie still works as a fun action monster movie on par or perhaps better than most of the Jurassic Park/World movies. I’m a big fan of The Big Lebowski and I finally saw Walter next to Vietnam War soldiers. Very colorful and more charismatic human characters. It plays off like two classic franchises as it’s Predator meets Jurassic Park. New MV Rankings 1. Godzilla vs. Kong 2. Kong: Skull Island 3. Godzilla 4. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire 5. I’m a little biased too because the first Godzilla movie I ever saw was King Kong vs. Godzilla and watching the 2021 movie made my dream come true seeing it modernized and remade after 34 years since seeing KKvG on TV back in 1987. And I’m a little biased with GvK because I prefer how Godzilla and Kong looked in it and I own toys of them from that movie. Perhaps in a few years, I might rank Skull Island higher than GvK. It’s no doubt the better movie but I’m ranking my favorites. GvK had some really stupid characters like Eiza Gonzalez’s character being the female version of the bloodsucking lawyer in Jurassic Park. “Dump the monkey!” I love Eiza, btw. Hot af. Loved her in Ambulance. But her character deserved to get eaten by Kong. I think it’s becoming clearer that I’m more Team Kong. While Godzilla is cooler with the cooler designs, he’s just a brute who gets into fights. Godzilla has as much personality as Rey Palpatine. With Kong, you can see the compassion in his eyes from watching Skull Island when he was younger and smaller. Brie Larson’s character touches him and he doesn’t get angry. Kong would make a better friend. This doesn’t mean I hate Godzilla or I like Kong far more. I still like them nearly the same. And I love my Hiya figure of G21 next to my Art Spirits K21. Let’s say I’m 55% on Kong’s side and 45% on Godzilla’s side. They can be a badass duo if they work together. But Godzilla is beloved for “shallow” reasons. To sell toys or because he looks cool. It’s not because he has depth in his personality. Even the other monsters he fights in his movies have no personality. I never understood the love for Mothra. While Godzilla is the bigger asshole between him and Kong, I’m still okay with it. But my heart will always root for the underdog in Kong, the OG big bad monster who inspired Godzilla. I’m with all the Black dudes or brothas who f**ks with Kong. He’s my GUY too. He’s an ugly mofo but he’s the one I’ll root for more. The actors for Eazy E and Dr. Dre from Straight Outta Compton (2015) were both in it and I thought the Eazy E actor did a terrific job for the small role he had. Monarch had some of the WORST characters in all of MonsterVerse. Cate, Kentaro and May were so annoying. Cate was perhaps the least annoying of the three but all three were whiners. I especially did not like what a dickwad Kentaro was towards Cate in the beginning. I have no issues with Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, and Rebecca Hall but they all had very forgettable human characters. I don’t even remember what the Maximoff twins did in Godzilla (2014) except act like a married couple with a kid before portraying twins in Age of Ultron. Hank Marlow in Skull Island is a cross between Wrongway Feldman in Gilligan’s Island Season 1 and Randy Quaid in Independence Day. I love John C. Reilly in so many roles he’s in like in Boogie Nights, Walk Hard, Step Brothers, Stan & Ollie, and Winning Time as Jerry Buss. He’s usually portraying a delightful character. Chris from Film Stocked is correct. Skull Island is the best movie in MV. Sean Chandler also ranks it No. 1. Take off the Kong name and Skull Island still works as a good action movie whether it’s a MV movie or not. If based in chronological order based from the stories’ timeline, Skull Island should be watched first. 1. Kong Skull Island to me is the best. I just love that time period piece. Seeing i have never known about any of the wars. Untill about 10 Years ago and it made me look up and find as much about these wars and why it happend. Anyway i also love the little easter egg about Metal Gear Solid in the movie. 2nd. Godzilla - 2014 The Scope and Scale of Godzilla was really awesome. I loved how Gareth Used it to show how Epic these Monsters really are. I always have fun with this movie. Also seeing Wanda and Quicksilver playing Husband and Wife is something else. Love see these two on screen. 3. Godzilla vs Kong. Just a fun movie all around. The battles are Epic and i think it is the movie with the most heart because of Kong and Gia whom he has bonded with. It shows Kong in a New Light of how clever he really is. The Team Up Moment is also Awesome to see. 4. Godzilla x Kong Until I see it this coming friday this is where ill put it for now. Because of what i did hear about it. I am busy with the Audiobook of it so maybe it will help me push it up or down. 5. King of the Monsters. Great Fights but nothing else.

The "other ice one's" name is Shimo. 😄 Went into this video expecting "ah, it's another ranking video" but I ended up liking and agreeing with your take and actually rank the movies in the exact same order that you did. My main gripe with GxK, if any, is that I hope it ran longer. There were elements with too much build up with little pay off. KotM is the undisputed king of the current monsterverse, no contest. They showcased a banger lot of kaijus here but none of them felt left out and the screentime for each of them was just absolute perfection. I'm seeing GxK again over the weekend in IMAX and am totes excited!

It's a bit ironic that you didnt give a second thought of people being in the building Skar King throws but cared about the people in KotM because the final fight in Boston was an empty city. The citizens were already evacuated.

I rate them pretty much the same as you, except that I could go back and fourth on the given day about whether Godzilla (2014) or Kong: Skull Island are fourth or fifth. GKOTM is still my favorite overall, and I’m glad you agree. Best overall story, action and score. I don’t get the hate this movie sometimes gets. It was my son’s favorite, too, but just got replaced for him by GxKTNE.

I agree with king of the monsters being the best. The classic Godzilla and Mothra theme music makes it supreme. There were times in The new empire when Mothra theme could have been tied in that would have been great for classic Godzilla fans. All good though!

To be honest, I'd change the order of the movies altogether. Narratively speaking.... Watch Godzilla (2014) first. Then the monarch series (2015 to 2017). Followed by skull island (2017). GvK (2021) and GxK (2024) are direct sequals to skull island and monarch. So I'd watch those next. The last film should be Kotm (2019).

COMPLETELY agree King of the Monsters is my favorite Godzilla film alongside Minus One, and I have seen every single film multiple times. It just felt like such a love letter the fans, and each of the monsters are handled so well.

This is my personal ranking of the MV films: 5. GxK the new empire - it was a good film and reminded me a lot of the Showa era of Godzilla however I don’t think it had the biggest effect on me and just some bits were just 😐Overall a 7/10 4. Kong skull island - I really enjoyed this film I think the human characters were some of the best and the skull crawlers design was just great. Overall a 8/10 for me. 3. GvK - this film had me so hyped but I think it’s only problem with it is that it focuses way too much on kong for me but the fight scenes always delivered greatly. Overall a 8.5/10 2. Godzilla 2014 - I’m this film has probably the best human characters in the franchise imo and the suspense of the film was just overwhelming. The mutos are just the best villains in the mv, but my only downside with the film is that u didn’t see Godzilla for around an hour. But overall an 8.6/10 1. KoTM - this film is easily imo the greatest mv films ever ,except the f*cling humans who I can agree are the most annoying out of all the films, but in terms of monsters rodan was cold asf and don’t even get me started on ghidorah he’s just bloody perfect. From serizawas death to the g man’s thermonuclear Form this film for me was a 9/10. Excluding the humans of course but if they were included I would still give the film a solid 8/10.

I agree.... KOTM is the best, and it grows on me more and more. I wish that they would have continued with the KOTM version of Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Mothra, etc.. I feel like the Monsterverse has robbed us of a true Mechagodzilla vs Godzilla show down. Mechagodzilla deserves an entire movie just like King Ghidorah got in KOTM.....instead of 5 minutes of screen time at the end of GvK

Kotm is goated simply cuz the superpower kaiju action looks far superior to throwing punches and buildings. It’s visually epic as it utilized the dark surroundings to highlight Godzilla, mothra and ghidorah powers. It had good lore but didn’t cut down in action. While gxk struggled to provide good action scenes(the very short end fight). GVK was a bit better in terms of action as we could see the scale properly as kong and Godzilla fought.. but it was still comparatively less interesting as the main villain was a kaiju robot(i prefer mythical beings as villians). Gxk had cool mythical beings but failed to utilize them properly(Tiamat and shimo) which was a big L. The film is doing great tho.. good for us monsterverse fans but I can’t say it satisfied us.

I always kinda saud i felt the the rainy stormy environment in KOTM made the movie feel more Lovecraftian if that makes sense. More out of this world beyond human comprehension.

My issues is Ghidora is the best villain by far. Every other monsterverse villain is lame by comparison. Ghidora would literally fry Kongs ass in 10 sec.

1.Godzilla (2014) The one that started it all. It had such a great sense of scale and I personally liked the characters. The Godzilla scenes were so epic albeit there should have been a bit more of them. 2. Kong: Skull Island Probably the best one objectively, best human characters and acting. Kong is such a cool monster in this movie, the villains were also pretty sick. 3. Godzilla King of the Monsters The best monster action in the Monsterverse. Really focuses on the kaiju's and less on the characters. Awesome movie in the theater. 4. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire Some great scenes and a really fun time, did not care for the human characters at all tho. 5. Godzilla Vs Kong Fun movie with some cool fights, personally never been a fan of the concept of Mechagodzilla so the end fight scene while cool was not for me.

Edwards is good at directing but bad at story. The creator was great visually but generic as hell. The problem with the 2014 movie is the humans are bland except Bryan Cranston who is wasted and we get teased to much with the Godzilla action. Skull Island is more entertaining then 2014 and has more fun characters in my opinion. King of the Monsters has good to great monster action but a bland human story but it's a great fun Godzilla movie.

I am a fan of the franchise despite its flaws but I just rewatched KOTM and it was a tragic writing disaster that made the movie unwatchable. Love 2014 though.

I have yet to watch Godzilla x Kong: New Empire but for me it’s: 1. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (10/10) 2. Godzilla (9/10) ……… 3. Kong: Skull Island (4/10) 4. Godzilla Vs Kong (3/10) and Monarch is probably 10/10 for me I loved the show, as for the Kong and Godzilla Vs Kong I thought both very pretty bad and I don’t have much hope Godzilla x Kong will be any better.

Godzilla is the only one I enjoy. Think the rest range from mid to trash

KOTM is by far the worst. Shit writing, annoying ass characters, and bad direction. However, the action is absolutely badass
