another series i'd love for smash is all references in the spirit battles, both the fights themselves and the adventure mode maps, wouldn't know how to sort those though, guess that will be on you if you do it.

A minor note about Fox that wasn't mentioned: The reason for Master and Crazy hand being the final boss is because it's the closest to represent fighting Andross when he's a floating head and floating two hands.

That's how I noticed it in my 1st playthrough. And Samus tends to fight giant sized final bosses like Mother Brain, Metroid Prime, Queen Metroid, etc.

You missed a reference for Puff. Another reference is that: when she faces C. Falcon, Luigi, Ness & Jigglypuff, those 4 were also unlockable fighters in Smash 64.

I will say I did consider it, but a lot of them just felt posed as neat pics to end on rather than any kind of references. Of course there are exceptions, but many weren't pointing at anything.

For Pikachu's Classic mode route, there is also a subtle reference with the Mewtwo fight. The fight takes place in Final Destination and has Pokemon Red / Pokemon Blue Medley play in the background, which is also what happens with Mewtwo's unlock fight in Melee.

@@aaricbro. I honestly think that Giga Bowser should be replaced by Fury Bowser. I hate that Bowser's final smash is a Smash Original thing, instead of a reference. Don't get me wrong, I love original things, but not for the fighters. Just for villains and story stuff, which is something Smash doesn't go into at all really, other than in Brawl, and with the Hands. Galeem and Dharkon come close, but are generic as hell, and not in an enjoyable way.

Fun fact: Sakura hated the modern 3D version of bowser because wasn’t how he imagined him when he played the original, he imagined him towering over Mario and much more fierce, so he created giga bowser to show what he always thought bowser should look like.

I think the reason that Ridley is giant in most of the classic modes is because that would be his most accurate size to the character.

I do find it interesting that Porky wasn’t brought back as a boss fight, even if it was just for Ness and Lucas. He’s the only boss from brawl not referenced.

This is me with many fights in routes tbh. Its cool that Master Hand appears as boss on New Donk City stage, but why no others? Or why Sonic route is confusing and doesnt end with a Super Sonic sequence Or how Sephiroth battles variouse bosses but theres no mode for that for other characters Or how so many of these end with Master hand and Crazy Hand only and not something more original

For Captain Falcon's route, I really wished they had him fight against fighters that referenced various F-Zero racers like red biker alt Wario with a sword as Samurai Goroh, Metal Captain Falcon as Mighty Gazelle, red or white alt Zero Suit Samus as Jody Summer, etc and have the final boss be Ganondorf in his darkest alt as Black Shadow much like his spirit fight

Blood Falcon, too! With how often Dark Link is acknowledged as a separate character in Classic Mode, it's a shame that arguably the only other F-Zero representative, and one of the few playable villains in Smash, doesn't get acknowledged once. (Even if he is just a skin.) I wish he got his own name and announcer lines on the character select screen like Alpha and the Koopalings do, too...

I was thinking that the reason on Puff’s Classic that they were paired up was because they wanted to fit in all 12, but keep the first fighter, other series character, and the mandatory fights in 64 separate, so they had to mix fighter 4 with 5 and 6 with 7.

Thought on Samus's route: the fight against Bowser, Charizard, and Mewtwo could be a reference to the nes metroid. Bowser represents nes kraid, Charizard is nes ridley, and mewtwo vaguely could be seen to represent mother brain since his psychic abilities are linked to his high brain activity

I think that Giga Bowser was also kinda going with the trend of flagship nintendo series, as he represents the Smash series, the only person you fight in his classic mode that is from smash

Ridley isn't actually the main antagonist of Metroid, he's just the most re-ocurring. The main villain is actually Mother Brain.

Actually, Ridley is more qualified for the role of main antagonist of the metroid series as the term "Antagonist" is simply the person or force constantly getting in the way of the protagonist's goal, and isn't nessicarily the protagonist's main objective or threat.

She's only the antagonist in three of the games (Yes, Other M counts), but Ridley has been in all of them except for Metroid 2 I believe, assuming that we count the new Ridley fight added into Samus Returns. Sammy also has a much more personal vendetta against Ridley

Austin Haworth that Mother Brain wasn't the original. And honestly at this point the Galactic Federation is as much an antagonist as Mother Brain and her space pirates, if you count both the Main series and Prime series

I'd argue that Samus fighting the R.O.B. team could potentially also be a reference to The Subspace Emissary, as Samus's entire story thread up until entering Subspace is either in the Research Facility or the Subspace Bomb Factory, both inundated with R.O.B. units as enemies.

Captain Falcon should have had a route focused on characters who race, rather than characters who hit. I think the smash team forgot what series he's from. Or just, the series in general. Which sounds about right.

I think Round 5 In Samus' Classic mode hold more direct references to the Space Pirates: Bowser is Kraid (Both are spikey and mini-Kraid is a thing too) Charzard is Crocomire (Crocomire appears in hot fiery area) and Mewtwo is Phantoon I guess... since Phantoon seems to have Psychic powers.

Since Kraid was earlier Bowser would likely be the boss from Maridia (I forget the spelling, Dregon, Draegon?) both have painful backs and a soft under belly. It also makes sense to reference all Super Metroid Bosses instead of referencing one twice. Poor Spore Spawn though. And the Torizo I guess

it's likely been said before, but in jigglypuff's route, the fight on battlefield is referencing the fighting polygon team, since you fight the characters which the fpt were based on.

Samus’ route with the ROBs could’ve been a reference to the EMMI assuming Nintendo knew about Dread beforehand

I think the Wireframe Mac and giant Mr Game & Watch in Luigi's route could reference to the fact that they're both abstract takes on humans that aren't EXACTLY human either, which fits straight into Uncanny Valley territory. Alternatively, they could be a literal take on "shady people", or reference faceless humans (which is also uncanny and nervewracking)

Luigi definitely has the most creative Classic Mode Route in my opinion.

Maybe it was too obvious to mention, but the (New Donk) City theme in DK's route is a reference to the original Donkey Kong arcade game, in which DK kidnapped Pauline (who is now mayor of New Donk City and appears in the stage). This scenario in turn was obviously inspired by DK's namesake King Kong, who kidnapped Fay Wray in New York City.

Samus should've fought Galleom as a boss to reference giant robots like Quadraxis, Mecha-Ridley or even Mother Brain's final form. It's so lame that so many final fights are just freakin' Master Hand. Fox at least makes sense since Andross is basically another hand boss.

Ness fighting Master Hand and Crazy Hand actually still makes sense Ness (well all the characters in the Mother series) fought weird and obsurd enemies in the game, so to Ness, fighting 2 giant hands are like nothing to him So not really just a generic final boss choice for Ness

Another thing to add to Jigglypuff fighting Ness, Luigi, Falcon and Puff in Classic Mode is that all four characters are the unlockable characters in the game since out of the 12, everyone but those 4 you could play immediately.

I'm surprised how this wasn't done yet but i'm happy you're making it now. It's so entertaining On a side note, I wish Captain Falcon's Classic Mode Route was about racing. There are plenty of options too like the Mario characters for Mario Kart, Kirby for Kirby Air Ride, Sonic for Sonic R, Pikachu for Pokemon Dash, Wario for driving around on his bike in WarioWare, Diddy Kong and Bajo Kazooie for Diddy Kong Racing, The Miis due to being playable in Mario Kart and have racing games in Wii Party and Wii fit, As well as a final fight with Blood Falcon would be a nice touch. The final boss could've been Galleon as he's able to turn into a vehicle and drive away or into the opponent

Actually Fox's boss fight with Master Hand and Crazy Hand is the reference to Andross the main antagonist of the Star Fox series.

Is it possible that future installments of this series could include the Congratulations screens for the Classic Modes? I know plenty of them aren't references, but some of them are pretty clever (I had to actually put down the controller when I first saw Snake's because I was laughing so hard).

Classic Mode is one of my favorite things to do in Ultimate. I love how each fighter has a tailored route. This looks like it will be a fruitful new video series. Nice work, Aaron, and cool new logo.

Sir Potato Bottom Sakurai basically has the final say. Nintendo gives criteria for the game to meet, Sora ltd. basically can do whatever they want as long as they meet them, but as director Sakurai has the most power when it comes to little details like this.

You forgot a reference for Jigglypuff’s Classic Mode path. The four characters you fight on Battlefield represent the Fighting Polygon Team’s original character models (Capt Falcon, Jigglypuff, Ness, and Luigi (replacing Mario since he was already fought).
