Dr. Karin Wiburg believes the way in which mathematics is currently taught, K-20, results in the alienation of many students from the subject. She suggests a radical redesign in how to teach and organize the mathematics curriculum.
Dr. Karen Wiburg is a Distinguished Professor of Learning Design and Technology at New Mexico State University. She teaches graduate students about learning, research and technology with a focus on math and English Language learning. She entered education as an outsider, never intending to be a teacher, but while volunteering discovered how to engage kids in math learning.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Hi This is Karin Wiburg. I know it is not as easy as making cookies but it could be a lot easier for kids to understand Algebra if they learn arithmetic in a structured fashion where numbers in arithmetic have relationships between each other. Even young children can be equal and unequal expressions between number or objects.

I meant create expressions. It really is a different way to learn math and I am working on a book on this topic.

Is this a more intuitive way teaching maths? How do you know? Does everyone have to succeed in learning math?

I'm looking again. And I still don't understand what DrWilburg is saying in that example with the coordinates "game".

Algebra is easy as making cookies? That's simply not true. I don't understand her examples about learning ratios, or x and y coordinates. Dr Wilburg may think that she is being clear but she isn't clear to me. That's the problem: people like her assume that everyone has a basic level, that their explanations can be followed by more or less anyone. They are wrong.

@@michelef406 Thank you for answering. I went to see the Khan academy some time ago. Not helpful: they assume that we can follow their explanations. My problem is that I can't.
