I'm still hoping that skincare influencers will make an issue of the size of sunscreen products. We're being gouged. When using the proper amount they can last a little into a month, if not less. At that rate it can become the most expensive skincare product we own. Being that sunscreen is one of products with proven effectiveness to prevent premature aging as well as help to prevent cancer, it's not great that it can cost so much Iit should be 5 oz. (preferably 8 oz.) minimum for face and neck, and at least 16 oz. for the rest of the body. Without raising the prices. I often use a body sunscreen on my face, but as Michelle says, they can lack the elegance of ones made for the face.

@@ririimari @Tarren Mari I just bought the Native Mineral Sunscreen Spf 30, 5 oz. I have medium deep skin (similar to youtuber Ameerah Muhammad) and it doesn't really have a cast on me and dries more matte than greasy. It feels noticeable on the face. They do make one specifically for the face.. The Stlyle and Beauty Doctor has reviews of both. The other one I use is Coppertone Pure & Simple Spf 50, 6 oz. It has a liquid texture rather than cream so feels lighter to me. It has a cast and more of an oily finish. But I like it because the texture makes it easily spreadable. I cover it with powder foundation. I'm glad I found the Native one because the Coppertone was hard to wear on my body without embarrassment because of the cast, and I need makeup to use it on my face.

Not an expert, just try a LOT of sunscreens …. Suggest some trial and error with brands marketed to babies or kids. All the physical sunscreens leave a white cast- obviously- because that’s how they work. Surprisingly, the cheapie Aldi brand ‘Sensitive’ sunscreen is the one I use for longer walks, sport. Their ‘face’ one is in a small tube, cheap enough to buy multiples (waste of packaging)
@ajae...
@ajae... 2 жыл бұрын
@@ozwrangler.c I think we were writing our replies at the same time because I suggested a cast free mineral sunscreen. I have tried a lot of sunscreens, and most of them are little. My choices aren't the issue. It's what companies make available to their consumers. The Native Spf I recommended has one version for face and one for body. The face one has an additional plant oil. But it's $16 for less than two ounces. Their body one is $20 for five ounces. Most people are going to see the word face and buy the smaller one, which Native is counting on. I believe this can be done better.

I can confirm the “don’t use expired sunscreen” warning. I did this once as a preteen, not realizing sunscreen expired (it was like a year or more past the expiry date). I am very very pale so burn easily, and I got the WORST sunburn I have ever had in my entire life that weekend. It was basically like I wasn’t wearing any sunscreen. I was in so much pain I had to stay home from school for several days, basically slathered in aloe, trying not to move. Just wearing clothing was painful. Eventually my skin peeled off in giant sheets as the damaged layer died and came off. So yeah, never ever use expired sunscreen! I have always checked expiration dates since that awful weekend.

Your comment about keeping sunscreens out of the heat unlocked an ancient memory for me. I deadass used to think sunscreens never worked as a kid because I would always end up sunburned at the beach... cut to the 3 year old jumbo bottle of sunscreen that lived in "the beach bag" that would rotate between sitting in the hot car or sitting in the hot sun, that my mum never made me or my sisters reapply after swimming 💀💀💀

Being make up free for more than 10 years makes it sooooo much easier to use sunscreens. We already have way too many layers of other products (even with the minimal a.m. routine) + layers of reapplication.... Can't wait for the p.m. double cleanse! Once again, thank you. You're amazing 💘

It's usually because people forget to apply sunscreen before they go out for a cigarette or something. Better be prepared for such occasions. :D ANd many office buildings have got large windows ie a lot of photoaging (UVA) can occur in 20 years sitting there. Those derms are a little overly cautious.

I’m so happy this video came out at this time in my life. I’m 33 years old and am only now starting to wear sunscreen, buying my first bottle last week. I was one of those kids whose parents didn’t bother with sunscreen. My mother is kind of a miser and didn’t want to spend the money on something, she thought, only kept me from getting a sunburn (and I’m one of those people who burns once in the spring and never burns again all summer). The other parents would be putting sunscreen on their kids and she would just rub my arms and back pretending to put sunscreen on so the others would think she was being a “good parent”. My dad thought it might be a gimmick businesses were pushing, ie. “give us money for this useless product that we will tell you your kid NEEDS”. But that excuse only goes so far, because I’m an oncology nurse. I see how devastating cancer is every day, but it was always something I thought I would look into later or just forget about. BUT I just spent a ridiculous amount of money buying a variety of products to make it easier for myself until I get in the habit. Powder sunscreen in my purse (thank you for mentioning this in the video), a bottle by the door, a bottle in the bathroom, one on my vanity. All different kinds so I can see what works best for me. Thank you again for a great, informative video. Wish me luck!

I'm somebody who did wear sunscreen as a kid, but only ever at the beach, and almost always without frequent reapplying, and I'm willing to bet that it was the same for other children who weren't prone to sunburns... so if it helps, the rest of us probably didn't get much less sun damage than you did, I hope you don't stress too much about it!

You know how we had criticized companies for releasing sunscreens with alcohol in it? After trying Biore Watery Essence, Nivea Sun Kid, Avene Lait Enfant, I'd rather sunscreens have alcohol for either the sake of texture or mixing the filters together.
@annate5127
@annate5127 2 жыл бұрын
I'm starting to get the impression that whether the presence of alcohol becomes an issue depends on the rest of the formula. Combined with the right ingredients, it seems to be less irritating and make the formula go on better, look better, and feel better. I have rosacea and sensitive eyes and the only sunscreens that I have been able to put on my eyelids and that don't irritate my skin due to their heaviness have been the LRP invisible fluid and the garnier uv fluid, both of which contain alcohol

Ty for the reminders and info! Your videos have made the whole sunscreen ordeal much easier to get through! I've given up on getting sunscreen overseas due to shipping costs and the need to frequently ship from overseas due to low amounts per bottles. I agree that the best sunscreen to use is the one you reach for and not sit on the shelf. Im exploring more sunscreens available locally and am grateful I can find great filters simply through loriel's brands though I do wish Canada had access to other modern filters. Currently using Vichy ideal soleil spf 60. Its mexoryl is low in percentage but applies without whitecast and doesnt clump. I am currently on tretinoin so I know when Im not applying enough (skin starts to peel). I mostly apply the sunscreen once a day and it seems to be good enough. It does sting my eyes if the cream melts down my face but otherwise it works well. I also got Garnier ombrelle complete sunscreen spf 60. This one seems to stay on the surface of my face but it doesnt melt. Both will clump if I dont apply immediately and if I rub too much so I cant dot the product all around my face for even application. Otherwise Im pretty satisfied for now! Both come in 200mL bottles and so are more cost effective as I also dont have to make frequent trips to buy a bottle. I at least can stop thinking and looking for sunscreen products and just use it!!

Great video (as always). I feel like there are so many face sunscreens to choose from (yay), but affordable, good body sunscreens are more difficult. We are a family of 5, active outside in the summer, so we go through A LOT of sunscreen. However… I am always on the hunt for new options. Would love to know more of your faves ✨

I’m one of those people that are terrified of sunscreen but I’m using Adapalene gel for anti aging so I don’t have a choice. La Roche Posay I’ve learned to love! I have sensitive skin, I’ve always tried zinc oxide sunscreens thinking they were safer but they actually irritate my skin and I hate the white cast!! I’m proud of myself as I’ve been using their chemical sunscreen everyday 🎉 Watching this to keep me on track ;-) trying to love sunscreen hahaha but I do enjoy La Roche Posay and highly recommend!!

These videos helped me a lot when I learned that sunscreen is the best anti aging product there is. Literally public service! Thank you for creating these. I'm even *gasp* enjoying wearing sunscreen for the first time in my life! I'm generally following the 1,5 ml [or more] rule for my face, measured in a precision scale (equivalent to a ~thicc~ blob on the tip of my index finger for my face). The only thing I didn't get around yet was reapplying when I wear makeup at the office [aka everyday]. My commute is 10 minutes long, only in the morning, and I don't see the sun the whole day [no light through the windows at the office] so by far I'm skipping reapplication [I think wearing it without reapplying while avoiding the sun like a vampire is better than nothing at least]. When I'm actually exposed to the sun I follow the reaplication rule and don't wear makeup. I also go for at least the 50-70 FPS range just to be safe.

@@amyamy8177 I've been really liking the Nivea Sun Triple Protect Anti-Wrinkle with European Algae (FPS 50). It reminds me of Bioré Aqua Rich Watery Essence but it doesn't leave me nearly as oily. It also has a slightly 'whipped' texture that makes it very pleasant to apply. I have oily but dehydrated skin and it gives me a nice amount of hydration without too much shine!

You’ve finally answered all my questions about UVA protection that I DON’T FIND ANYWHERE! It is criminally underdiscussed and I always found a hard time “trusting” a sunscreen to adequately protect me against UVA which I care about MORE over SPF (or UVB protection) since I’m indoors all the time and am a sun-avoider. I never go lower than PA++++ and/or 4or5 stars UVA (like Altruist sunscreens).

My sunscreen questions: can I layer mineral over chemical or does it degrade the avobenzone? Also!! Is there any science behind the idea that some sunscreen filters cause hair loss? I didn’t hear either of these addressed but if I missed them someone let me know!

La Roche Posay BB cream is 50+, tinted and excellent. It does have fragrance in it, however, so as cannot use it around my eyes. I switch to the LRP for sensitive eyes for my eye area and my lips and ears. Let it dry down then apply makeup. I usually find the BB cream enough coverage for no makeup makeup look! Mascara on and go.

I hardly wear makeup anymore, and it makes reapplying sunscreen so wonderfully convenient. But on days when I do need some makeup, and I need to reapply, I take everything off, complete double cleanse, then redo my skincare, and sunscreen on top, and makeup. It’s the best result I can think of because I use makeup so rarely.

Thank you for the informative channel. I love that you are actually a professional speaking on these issues. I just wanted to ask what your thoughts are on reapplying sunscreens with very photostable filters. I read that photostable sunscreens can be applied once a day unless I am swimming or sweating heavily. Below is the ingredient list of the sunscreen, showing the UV filters. "Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Propylheptyl Caprylate, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Copernicia Cerifera Cera, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides, Tocopheryl Acetate, Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, Hydroxyacetophenone" Thanks a lot for your effort!

Just an FYI. I don’t have sensitive skin but was going through a sensitive stage -probs because I threw too much skincare at it. So I decided to buy a zinc oxide sunscreen for sensitive skin. It is the first product ever to burn my face off, even after I’d washed it off and tried to cleanse and sooth the skin on my face. But might just be me. Also, I like to use a little bit of MAC Studio Fix over my sunscreen if I don’t want shine or do want sheer coverage. Laying down a base of Milano Make it Last and finishing with a good quality fixing spray seems to meld everything together beautifully. So I don’t quite get the powder’s no good over sunscreen thing. If you can find a way that works I reckon go for it. Just, as Michelle points out, try not to disturb your SPF layer. That’s my contrarian post ☺️ Love your videos Michelle ❤️❤️

This was a great video! I consider myself to be a pretty savvy sunscreen wearer, and I use a lot of protective measures like hats, sunglasses, UPF clothing, but I definitely learned a few things! I was especially surprised by the 2-hour application information. I was one of those people that believed that the two-hour reapplication had to do with 2 hours in the sun. I thought that the sunscreen probably broke down or lost effectiveness after 2 hours and that's why reapplication was necessary. It kind of freaks me out that I've been thinking of this all wrong... I have a question about kids and sunscreen: not realizing that the reapplication was supposed to happen every 2 hours regardless, I've been sending my son to school with sunscreen on and assuming it would protect him hours later at recess. He's not a very sweaty kid and doesn't have oily skin so like you said maybe he's getting a little more than 2 hours out of his sunscreen, but now I'm thinking about how best to protect him this summer. Kids have such delicate skin and I know that sunburns in kids can be more harmful later in life than if you get burned as an adult. At least that's what I've heard. My son has never had a sunburn, thankfully, so maybe I'm doing all right with sunscreen in the summer time but I'd love advice on how best to protect kids. They aren't super good at reapplying sunscreen! 😅 I do put him in a lot of hats and sun shirts so at least that's a start.

I find that the perfect combo is chemical sunscreen + tinted sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens have elegant formulation most of the time, so it does not pill under makeup. Tinted sunscreen is a combination of color correcting base makeup and sunscreen. You will get double layers of SPF and you will have an even skin tone.

when i apply sunscreen, i go with this rule: slather on as much as you reasonably can. take a minute to work it into the skin and the spread it thoroughly. apply some more if you can. it shouldn’t leave a white cast after that and it shouldn’t be so much that it‘s dripping down your skin but max out the capacity of your skin. on very dangerous spots (for me it’s cheeks and shoulder and upper back mostly) apply some more and work it in or (if you can) even leave it a bit thicker on there without much spreading. not like you painted with white paint, but too thick to apply make up on top for example. this is what i do at the beach.
