So clear to see this reflected on consoles, the PC-Engine was released in '86 and has over a hundred shooters, the Mega Drive, released in '88 has almost a hundred shooters and the SNES released in '90 has almost sixty titles, comes to show how the shoot-em-up heyday was between the late 80's and early 90's, fortunately the PS1 has many ports and even some exclusives, while the Saturn has less than the PS1, but still a lot. Here's hoping we'll see the 32-bit era covered in a video like this, all the PS1 shooters and the PS2!

@@ShmupJunkie I'll say that your "Every Shooters" series are the best the KZfaq has to offer, at least from what I follow and specifically for shooters. They have a very upbeat energy and I hope it's at least half as fun to make them as it is to watch them. If you ever decide to cover these systems, I'm sure people will even save them for future reference, starting from the PC-Engine, Mega Drive and now Super NES. With all that, while the SNES has fewer shooters than many others, I feel it compensates by quality over quantity, while the NES is certainly the opposite, but still has dozens of great titles in the genre! I actually thought you already covered the NES and Saturn, but I got confused because what you did were developer-centered videos which include many of these consoles!

I've tried to watch that other Electric Underground channel that is often mentioned but sorry to say, I just can't get into it or the host. @@jonathanlisowski5618 One thing I do love about both ShmupJunkie and EU is they focus on the actual gameplay. Just got around to watching this finally, and - as expected - another absolute masterpiece. These videos aren't only sources of recommendations and fun, but informative on the history of this genre. You noticed that too huh? Yeah it's a bummer this video is grossly underperforming after a really great start due to all the awesome subs watching and enjoying. But the algo follows overall interest, so it's not youtube's fault. Too many just lack the interest to give it a chance and discover how wrong they may be about the system and it's shooting library. Or maybe there's just much less SNES fans that care about shooting games compared to the Mega Drive. Either way I think it came out great and am really glad you and others have enjoyed it. This library really deserved highlighting.

Three things that make a huge difference to me when it comes to scrolling shooters in general are that they have fast and fluid animation, allow you to take a few hits without dying, and give you lots of special weapons to play around with and power up. For these reasons, "Super Aleste" is one of my absolute favourite games in that genre.

Regarding the bosses in Thunder Spirits dying ridiculously quickly, it was also that way in Thunder Force AC, so the fault for that actually lies with the original arcade. Great video! Some really good reminders to go back and play a lot of great games that I grew up with and check out a couple that I missed. One thing to keep in mind though is that a lot of these games were longer than their arcade counterparts because it would be hard to justify releasing a 20 minute arcade game for $60+ on a console in the 1990s.

First of all, great breakdown of all the shmups on a system. Your videos that do that for a given system or developer are my favorites and have helped me find so many of the shmups I bought new or used in the last year. Second, in your Cotton 100% view you mentioned the fairy charge attack and I’m so glad you did because I didn’t know it even existed. It wasn’t mentioned in any online guide I saw, doesn’t get mentioned on the button mapping window in the PS4/Switch re-release, etc. So for anyone reading this comment: you hold the bomb button to charge the attack, then fairies start spinning around you and you can release it to fire the fairies at the enemy. This drastically decreases the time some boss encounters take. So thanks for getting me to look for an attack I never knew about in the game. You made me play it better. :)

Excellent work on this my friend! I know I'm late to the party, but I've been watching this in small pieces during workouts the past few weeks and finally finished it up. I had both a Genesis and SNES as a kid, but I definitely leaned more towards SNES back then so I'm much more familiar with a lot of the games on this list. I just got a copy of Area 88 on the SFC so I'm hyped to finally give that a shot soon. Also learned that you could play as Bomber King in Hector '87 during the Caravan Shooting Collection segment which blew my mind. Keep up the great work dude!

I remember clearly playing or watching my brothers play R-Type III, Choplifter III, Firepower 2000 and Super Turrican 2, among a few others. The 'usually' muffled SNES sound effects and soundtrack (while not always the case) is so unique and nostalgic, I really enjoy it. As a kid, slowdowns never bothered me, even now, since they happen when things get busy I always thought that by slowing down made it more tense, some games do it on purpose such as Street Fighter II, specially when hit by a fireball in the air and a few other instances, too.
