John is an accomplished veteran technician with experience in all kinds of environments. He has finally had the opportunity to bring home his work tools as he no longer needs them to wrench professionally. Turns out, he already has quite the home setup, and the shop to back it up! It was such a pleasure talking with John and seeing all the tools he has used over the years. Thank you John! If you enjoyed his tour, give him a Like!

All the professional mechanics are all very interesting too, you can tell they take great pride in their work and tool collection as they should. I grew up in a family business of mechanics and started wrenching when I was 15. I had to stop wrenching when I was 52 due to back problems. Still have all of my tools and boxes and wrench for recreation now. Love watching your channel and seeing what new tools are out there. Not a ton has changed other than the massive tool boxes and I find that there is not much I don't have other than the big stuff that heavy equipment mechanics use. My shop situation wasn't conducive to the bigger tool boxes so I ended up with 7 smaller boxes which I still have. I kept one set for the race shop so I didn't have to put things away to go to work in the retail shop the next day. I converted that box to a woodworking box when I retired. I keep wondering how much clean up and polishing some of these guys do before you interview them. The guy in the interview is the real deal. His boxes look like working boxes! :)

I agree with you on 6 point ratcheting wrenches. I just got a metric set of Mac ones that also flex. My standard set are 12 point and it’s just not enough grip sometimes with soft metals. Good tools are worth their weight in gold.

It’s a hell of a lot easier to just slide the 12 point wrench on the fastener with 12 sides instead of having to match the exact 6. However I do understand when talking higher torque, I rarely use a ratcheting wrench for something I need to really lean on enough to maybe break it
@ToolBoxTour
@ToolBoxTour Жыл бұрын
Thats true. I don’t break things loose with a ratcheting wrench either 👍
@markm0000
@markm0000 Жыл бұрын
@@williamcarnero9595 I’m just saying there’s more contact surface with a 6 point and it’s less likely to round over something delicate than a 12 point that’s just gripping on the corners. I’m usually working with very soft metal fasteners with low torque and I can tell the difference.

The Milwaukee wrenches really are an improvement in that regard too. 12 point because there are 12 point fasteners out there. So they probably do it for simplicity of inventory.

I agree 100% I learned 20 years ago how hard it is to get out broken taps / extractors drill bits etc. I'm a union journeyman millwright and see apprentices or contractors that break off taps every now and again and our tool crib has multiple sets of the walton tap extractor kits with a bunch of extra flutes and parts. There awesome when ya need them.

I noticed that a great chunk of his tools are kits. I used to have a bunch of kits too, nowhere near as many but i had to get rid of them to conserve my home space. Word of advice, dont waste ur space on kits that you can rent. The hand tools are the most important for your home. The specialty tools you can rent for free at almost any automotive store.

Fyi, the reason most ratcheting wrenches are either spline drive or 12pt is bcuz you have more positions to get the ratchet on the nut or bolt. 6pt are usually more difficult to line up where you need it in close quarters. Tekton was making all 6pt ratcheting wrenches but discontinued and are blowing them out on discount right now before releasing their new 12pt ratcheting wrenches NOV OF 2023.

A 6-point ratcheting wrench is not a flexible as a 12-point. Consider that not all fasteners are made the same…some being larger than nominal, whereas other slightly smaller than nominal. The 12-point is capable of accommodating a wider range of the tolerance band, therefore it is much better for non-standardized hardware

I would not recommend 6-point ratcheting wrenches for the simple reason the modern 12-point on a wrench is good enough and faster to get on a bolt in restricted areas you can’t see the bolt. The ratcheting mechanism will fail before the 12-point boxed end fails. In some cases like on a wore out drain plug, you probably going to need a 6 point socket and extra long ratchet or an extractor socket. Then replace the drain plug. Those little 6-point ratcheting wrenches are not going to help in this situation anyway.

He bought two complete sets of screwdrivers in different colors. He swapped out colors of each set, so all of his Philips screwdrivers are one color, and all of his flat heads are another color. Makes it easier to find the screwdriver you need.
