On its own, the 2003 remake is damn good. It’s just so glossy and produced. It seems its reputation has improved with time. When it came out, everyone HATED it and God help you if you preferred it over the original (which I did then, but I was also 14) The original’s gritty atmosphere helps it a lot

Ermey’s performances as Charlie/Hoyt in my opinion are the best acting performances in all of horror, ever. Say what you will about where it ranks or compares to the 74 original, but if you call yourself a TCM fan and you don’t love these movies even solely for what R. Lee Ermey brought to the atmosphere, you’re absolutely insane

The one positive I will say about the recent TCM is I haven’t laughed so hard in a horror movie in a long time. 1. When Leatherface popped his head up in that daisy field, I laughed so hard I couldn’t breathe. 2. When he throws a mallet or something at the girl and she flies through the bottoms of the house. I was in tears. It was gory and inadvertently funny. I didn’t hate it lol.

Oh spicy ranking! I too have a love/hate relationship with this franchise. Mine ranking would be: Excellent Tier: 1. TCM (2003) - Love everything about this movie; the characters (both victims and crazy family), the setting, the cinematography, Leatherface, the kills, the gore, Jessica Biel as the Final Girl. One of the best horror movies of the 2000s 2. TCM: The Beginning (2006) - Pretty much same as above, the victim characters were stronger in this movie, loved how they amped up the gore, liked the dinner scene near the end. I loved how the "final girl" in this movie was unknown to the killers but she put herself in harms way to try save her friends. Didn't end well for her but A for effort! 3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - I do love this movie and I agree with everyone else in the horror fandom, this is a classic and iconic. I just grew up watching the Platinum Dunes TCM movies so to me they are my OGs. That being said I loved dissecting the original TCM in my cinema studies class. I just don't re-watch this movie often. Good Tier: 4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) - I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, I was expecting trash but it was good... I probably need to watch it a few more times, but it's in my 4th place for now. Don't Like Tier: 5. Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013) - Once I got passed the timeline pothole i did find this movie entertaining upon re-watch. However, as this movie was made in the 2010s, there was no real excuse for the sloppy writing. What annoys me the most is making Leatherface an Anti-hero, like if the law enforcement family in this town hate the Sawyers because they are cannibalistic serial killers then I'm kind of on their side haha! 6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1986) - I want to like this movie but I'm not a fan of turning this franchise to a straight up dark comedy. The tonal shift is way too much. They do however do a great job with the comedy. It's just not my thing. 7. Leatherface (2017) - Talk about a misfire! A part of me liked that they tried something new, but this wasn't it. The twist was so obvious. To me this is the definition of hollywood handing over a generic horror movie spec script and telling the director to shoe-horn in TCM into the plot. This movie was just gross and not that enjoyable. Garbage Tier: 8. Leatherface TCM 3 (1990) - So boring. I've watched this 3 times and I still can't remember a god damn thing about this movie. 9. TCM: The Next Generation (1995) - Wow how does this movie exist!? It's a fun novelty that this movie has Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey but other than that this movie is a rollercoaster of bad story decisions, bad acting, boring at times, bat shit crazy at other times and all while looking like the cheapest movie ever made. I love watching classic horror movie franchises from start to finish, but i just can't with this franchise - way too hit & miss for me!

Since you asked, I have to disagree with you about Leatherface: TCM 3 of 1990. I find it to rank in about the middle of the series. First of all, the director, Jeff Burr, did not disown the film. He was not happy with the cuts made to give it an R rating, but he did get a restored version on the DVD release. He regularly talks positively about the film. Also, the film was originally intended to be a remake, not a sequel, but the producers decided to market it as a sequel instead. They did have Tobe Hooper involved with it as an "advisor" in the early phases of creating a remake. Another thing is that it isn't boring unless you're one of those born after 1990 inured to fast cut editing, excessive action & gore without much character narrative. These folks would find Dario Argento's early works boring as well. Lastly, it expanded on the Leatherface character as more of a brutish killer and less of a family lackey, which is also what he was in the 2003 remake. It's not great but it is better than a few others in the series.

#1. TCM (2003 REMAKE) The one that made me discover the franchise. An excellent reappropriation of the original's story, and one of the best remakes of the 2000's, easily. Very well directed, too. Leatherace is probably the most intimidating and scary he's ever been. Also, best Sawyer/Hewitt family; honorable mention of course to R Lee Ermey, who manages to be just as terrifying as Leatherface. Best chase scenes of the entire franchise, and one of the best groups of protagonists too, the highlight being of course Erin, who's probably the best final girl of the TCM universe. Overall, a memorable and chilling ride from beginning to end. I go back and forth between having this one or The Beginning as my top spot, but I'll stick with this one for today. #2. TCM: THE BEGINNING How dare you put it so low on your list?! D: Gimme your adress so I can send you death threats! Nah, more seriously, I really love that one. It takes everything that worked in the remake (the imposing and intimidating Leatherface, the great setting, and of course R Lee Ermey who gives once again a fantastic performance) and expands on it all, allowing for a great double-feature. The origins of the Hewitt family is presented in a satisfying way, bringing back the subplot of rural poverty which was present in the 1974 original. Also, props for being one of the goriest entries in the franchise. But also, it has, to me, the best group of protagonists of the whole franchise. Chrissie easily joins Erin in the top 2 of the best final girls of the franchise, making her demise even more tragic during the final scene. And the relationship between the two brothers makes both of them very likable. We root for characters we know can't possibly survive, but we love them so much we can't help but hope they might. #3. TCM (1974 ORIGINAL) Huge bonus points for historical relevance, as you mentionned. First and most iconic version of Leatherface. The atmosphere of this film remains unmatched to this day; you can feel the heat of the Texas summer in every scene. Also, an incredibly effective illustration of realistic and creepy horror. Not to mention the many, many iconic scenes thoughout the runtime. The only reason it's only ranked 3rd in my ranking is that I didn't really care for the protagonists. #4. TCM 2022 I expected waaayyy worse when this one came out, but I ended up being pleasently surprised! Sure, it doesn't get the unique atmosphere of the original, Leatherface looks more like Jason than his original self, Sally's return feels super shoehorned into the plot and appears to be an uninspired copy of H2018's Laurie, and the group of young protagonists tends to make us root for Leatherface most of the time. But! It's surprisingly well paced and directed, and it's a very enjoyable gorefest, making for an excellent slasher flick. Some scenes are very memorable (the ambulance scene, the bus massacre, the hiding under the bed, ...), and the overall plot gives a good reason for Leatherface to become Leatherface again. Also, I was actually smiling of joy during the ending: effective, surprising, and a nice hommage to the original. Honestly, I'd welcome a sequel with open arms! #5. TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D This one fit perfectly in the middle of my ranking. On the one hand, the intro was a nice throwback to the 1974 original, some sequences are very good (the escape scene in the van, the chase through the fair, the tense investigation by the cop in the house, ...), it's quite generous when it comes to the gore, Leatherface is pretty ok this time around, and the whole plot about the townsfolks being villains had potential. On the other hand, the notorious time paradox of the film is still pretty awkward, the characters aren't likable, and it's hard for me to have sympathy for the Sawyers, who were always supposed to be antagonists. Also, having the final girl becoming full Sawyer while Leatherface was butchring her friends just hours ago is pretty unbelievable. Idk, perhaps a direct sequel would have helped, because on its own, it's a decent slasher, but it does leave a strange taste in my mouth... #6. LEATHERFACE (2017) This one was actually well directed, and offered a lot of nice gore, along with a very few nice sequences. It's actually a quite decent bloody road movie. Just not a good TCM movie. I agree, it just doesn't feel like one. The Sawyers don't look at all like what they end up being in the latter films, and how are supposed to seriously believe that this charming and intelligent young man would become the Leatherface we see in the original?! Really?! I would have prefered a direct sequel to TC3D, easily. This one is very watchable, but I just don't buy its story. #7. TCM 4: THE NEXT GENERATION Unlike most people, I won't put TCM4 at the very bottom of my ranking, although I can't put it any higher for sooo many reasons. The acting and the directing really feel amateur, not to say atrocious. The teen protagonists are easily some of the worst and least likable ones of the entire franchise, Leatherface is a ridiculous abomination in this one, nobody is killed or even touched with a chainsaw, the Sawyer family now eats pizzas instead of people, 90% of the scenes are cheap reenactments of the original, and the overall structure of the movie from the second act up until the end is just a gigantic mess! And the Illumanits, WTF?! The only saving grace to this film is the character of Vilmer, who is the only one to be physically intimidating and over-the-top crazy enough to bring a tiny sense of threat to the table. And the only reason it's higher on my ranking than the two below is that at least this one has a feeling of "so bad it's ALMOST fun"; I could actually rewatch it from time to time just to enjoy its campiness. #8. TCM 2 I guess you either love this one or hate it. Sadly, I'm more on the hating side. I just can't bear TCM2, really. The comedy aspect of the movie is not welcome for me, and I haven't even smiled once watching it. It completely ruins the creepy tone the original film had established. Leatherface is more of a joke here and behaves like a teen in heat. The cook isn't intimidating anymore, and Chop-Top just doesn't work for me. The entire family just becomes boring, and I'm feeling like I bought a ticket to a bad comedy show. And the overall plot is just meh. Nah, really, I tried. Multiple times. But no. Just no. #9. LEATHERFACE: TCM 3 TCM 2 and 3 are pretty interchangeable in my ranking, actually. The only slightly positive I could find to TCM3 is that its Leatherface is NOT the worst of the franchise (that goes to part 2 and 4). Other than that, I agree. It's easily the most forgettable and boring picture of the franchise. The protagonists are particularly bland and unlikable (idk why people seem to like Ken Foree's character so much, to me he's just generic as f***), the new Sawyer family members are just boring, there's way too many replicas of scenes from the original except done a thousand times worse, Leatherface seems particularly absent, no gore whatsoever and no memorable kill or suspens scene, and the happy ending is ridiculously unbelievable. I know studio interventions did a lot of damage during production, but the final product is just tasteless. I'd say the only good thing about this movie is its trailer.

The unrated version of TCM 3 is pretty good. It’s just a shame that the unrated is still missing a bunch of gore the MPAA wanted removed because it was cut from the negatives. Also, the original “even the sheriff is in on it” ending is a lot better than the “Benny randomly comes back from the dead because test audiences wanted him in a sequel that was never made” one we ended up with. I think it would be the best sequel if a cut with the original gore and ending existed. Oh well

Gotta be honest I know this is a “cardinal sin take” but I think I would put TCM 2 over 1, don’t get me wrong I love 1 it’s a literal masterpiece, but 2 is scary and truly hilarious. It was such a risk, but I think it paid off in dividends, Bill Mosely as chop top is incredible and although I love Sally I feel Stretch played a much more active final girl. Again not discrediting the original it’s grimy, dark, well shot, and of course a straight up horror masterpiece

Your first three are good then it falls apart. the best four, which are the only really good ones and the only ones I'll really watch are- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Remake (2003), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Beginning and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Although every once in a while, Texas Chainsaw 3D can be a guilty pleasure.

I admire your honesty so much Zach, i like people who ain´t afraid to say how they really feel about certain things, that is unfortunately not the case with everyone. I am not really a huge fan of the TCM franchise, so i don´t really have any strong opinions about any of the movies. But of course i like some of the movies more, like forexample the 2003 remake and the original. But i would´nt say, that i hate any of the movies in the franchise. But great video as always Zach, i am a huge fan of you and as i said earlier your amazing honesty, but also your passion for what you do, i really admire that alot. :)

For me the only two good movies in this entire messy franchise are The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006). Texas Chainsaw 3D is the only other one that I can enjoy for the fun of it, despite its bizarre timeline oversight and "do your thing cuz" after he just killed all her friends lol 😬. Great vid. Here is my list: the next two I really dislikes: 9. Texas Chainsaw Massacre the next generation.just an awful mess. 8. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: 3D. Hated most of it. The next three films are entertaining but flawed in my eyes: 7. Leatherface. “the twist” was really obvious so it kinda dragged down for me. 6. Leeatherface(the third movie). I know it’s high but I have a soft for it because of Ken Foree vs Learherface. 5. The New Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Most of it was great but I really disliked Sally Strode and some of the protagonists were Really annoying. The top 4 I genuinely love. 4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning: a great follow up to the remake. What holds it a bit down is it’s need to answer to many questions no one asked. 3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. I love this movie. Shockingly funny! 2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. My favourite remake of the the 2000’s. such a great film. 1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(73). For me it’s the only first film in a big horror franchise that is my favourite other the original Scream. A classic that give a really creepy vibes.

I will always have to believe that on paper texas chainsaw 3D had the best sequel concept. I find it a really interesting idea that with better guidance and a less cruel caretaker leatherface could be something of an antihero. He exists to serve his family after all so it reasons that if his family wanted him to act a certain way he would. The whole setup for the movie feels somewhat strong and makes the movie more unique and less derivative than just a family of cannibals killing again. Where the movie falls utterly flat is in the execution. I don’t understand how you fuck up an alright concept this much. The most common mistake is having leatherface act as a free agent but beyond that everything is just so poorly thought out. Very disappointing movie.

Great video. Personally as a TCM fan, who grew up seen this entire franchise. Leatherface although he was seen as the villain, in reality he was never the villain. He was just protecting the house or the property where his family lived, the people literally invaded his home and trespassed their own property. As if we analyze it on more deep context, Leatherface really doesn't have a motivation to kill if it's not by orders of his family, I always saw him as somehow a victim of his own family, they basically use him to commit the murders and in a certain way he only killed on self defense. Anyways, here is my personal ranking: -The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) -The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) -The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Remake (2003) -The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006) -Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 (1990) -Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D (2013) -Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1995) -Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) -Leatherface (2017)

I spent the night at a friend's once for Halloween, and they had a marathon of the entire series up to Texas Chainsaw 3D, which I think was the newest at the time. I know you didn’t ask me but I think the problem with a Scream prequel is there’s one death. Unless we completely switched genres from slasher to drama, audiences would hate watching nothing happen until the final act where Maureen dies.

Never really got into the Leatherface/Chainsaw movies. I still remember seeing the first one for the first time in October 1992. I was doing a horror movie marathon the lounge of my dorm for Halloween night. Somebody insisted that we show the original 1974 movie, which I'd never seen. Had several people show up for the marathon, and we started with Texas Chain Saw Massacre. We were about bored out of our minds, actually cheering when a chainsaw actually showed up. The person who insisted we include the movie in our marathon never showed up.
