Ceenr PD Nation Universal Battery system
After Thoughts about the Video: I first saw these a few months ago and was immediately excited. That stopped when I found out they are a crowd funding idea and I just walked away as I didn't think they were real or that there was an actual usable product. However when they contacted me I jumped on the chance to test them out for user feedback... who wouldn't. Only issue is I have no idea what the actual price is going to be in a year from now but I would assume cheaper than the stock batteries you buy. Possibly in the $40 range for a 4.0ah with 21700? That would be a great deal but only an assumption. I would think the tool conversion plates/adapters would have to be in the $15 range(assumption only) with possible bulk discounts...?
Charging time: This really depends on your USB C charger. I used a crappy one and it tooks 3 hours. I used a fast charger I use for my phone and it was around 90minutes.
PROS:
More powerful tools for a lot of brands
Bare battery easily fits into pants pocket(carry a spare)
Power bank for other devices/phone
Fits most modern brands
Lighter than a 3.0/4.0/5.0/6.0ah 10cell battery
No notable difference in tool balance
CONS:
Adapters have to be on tools
little stiff to remove battery from adapter
Safety overload shutoff requires plugging in usb to reset
USB C rubber covers
Slightly larger (1/4-7mm) than oem batteries
Need to fit more brands: Metabo HTP, Hercules, Bauer, Older Nicad tools

@joeboxter3635
@joeboxter3635 14 күн бұрын
They won't get sued. But they will be stopped through special technology that keys a brand to its own battery. Wait and see. There is as much, if not more, money in batteries than the tools. Batteries are very cheap to manufacture compared to tools. So the real profit is in the batteries. The likes of DeWalt, MWK, etc. are not going to let this upstart eat their profits.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 14 күн бұрын
I think that is why they're going down the crowdfunding avenue of getting these exposed/made. I'm sure that it covers them in some way of not getting sued??? This is just the printer ink scandal all over. And yes, I think they will use technology just like the printer people did to make sure you were using OEM. But then you give it a year or two and people find out how to bypass it. It'll be a never-ending game like it already is.

@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 14 күн бұрын
My only concern is these might be using low grade(out of spec) Molicel as they put black sharpie over the logo. No proof but have never seen a id blacked out; but I don't know. I did a drain test down to 14.5v(5 amps for single row 9amps for double) as I do with all packs and it came out to 3700mah. Not bad but I would expect a 4200mah High Drain cell to give me at least 3900-4000mah. Most 4000mah cells when new will give me 3800mah but I've never tested new Molicel batteries.

@@RYwoodview . . There are adapters for Ryobi tools. I have two different ones that allow Makita LXT batteries to be used on my Ryobi tools. The Ryobi tools do not like it. Something in the programming of the tool. I thought it was a poorly designed cheap adapter, so I bought a more expensive one but had the same underwhelming results. I use only Dewalt and a few Ryobi I use adapters to adapt newer lithium batteries to the nicad tools. Dewalt makes a very good adapter for about $35. I have used the cheap Chinese adapters and found them to be very poorly made and prone to melting the plastic around the contacts sometimes damaging the battery Now if this company can make a reliable system with quality adapters it sounds like a good idea. The larger batteries sound like a good idea. Will wait and see. Great video as usual 👍

These universal batteries have the potential to be game changing for the consumer! My fear is though is that companies will start either serializing the batteries with some proprietary ID system or raise the prices of the value "tool only" listings. Only time will tell, but for something as large as cordless tools hopefully the aftermarket/DIY community will catch up and counter this.

TTC video from a month ago showed nearly same performance on smaller tools, but weaker performance on high torque impacts and saws compared the equivalent size OE brand battery.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 14 күн бұрын
Yes, I saw that. That's all relative to how many cells are in parallel in a pack. A pack with two parallel rows of 21700s is going to perform better than a single row. Also, the brand of cell makes a difference. That's why even they hoped that the Samsung 40t would be used as they perform better. On a lot of cheaper brands, this single row of 21700 will perform better than any pack made by them though. Obviously if you're going to compare it with the top of the line. DeWalt/ Milwaukee/ Makita you're going to get better performance with an OEM pack. However, the people that are using those are professionals and I don't think that is the consumer they're looking for. I think they're looking for the avid DIY/ pro homeowner market.

I assume these batteries have a built in low voltage cut off? That's one of the main dangers if using battery adaptors, some manufacturers put the low voltage cut off in the battery, some put it in the tool. If you use a battery that is relying on the tool to cut off the power and it doesn't you can destroy your battery very easily.

Imagine needing a new outlet in your home for every item you buy because the plugs are all different? Standardization should be "standard" when it comes to batteries too. I wish all cars used the same battery, but for the most part, they use standard connections across the market. This could be a game changer for the portable tool industry, but I wouldn't count on it being accepted as the end-all for adapters until the manufacturers get it together and agree on a standard. Dewalt has their FlexVolt, and I use more of the 60v batteries than the straight 40v because they adapt to the 40v tools using the "Flex" option and the 60v has more "oompf" on the smaller tools and last longer. Enjoy your Summer, and keep Ginger cool with that hose. 🙂

Heh, battery manufacturers will never standardize. What you call "tools" they refer to as "accessories for our batteries". Don't think of them as tool manufacturers anymore, that stopped when they decided to all but outlaw good corded tools. Averaged out over all the trades is 4x the price of the tool is spent on batteries for it over the life of the tool. They could never sell you $1000 of extension cords for your $250 circular saw. Makes sense now? I fully expect tti or stanley/b&d to go after all of these 3rd party universal battery systems because unlike the adapters that still require branded batteries.......these things will cut into the sales of the battery manufacturers' batteries. A dewalt guy uses a milwaukee battery? They don't care because it's 1 in 5k and somewhere there's a milwaukee guy using a dewalt battery. Suddenly 50 dewalt guys are using ceenr batteries and 200 milwaukee guys are using ceenr batteries and none of those 250 bought any 1st party batteries? Shhhyeah, they care.

I don't see this being any different than an OEM battery if you dropped it from 10 ft on a ladder with the tool attached being any more susceptible to breaking than an OEM battery. As far as charging goes, I don't think people realize that different USBCs charge faster than others. If you use a USB a to USBC, you're going to be charging it about 15 watts. If you use any of the modern fast chargers for cell phones/laptops/tablets that go from USBC to USBC, you're going to be charging three to four times faster. From completely dead, this charges in about 90 minutes.

Do you notice any difference in the use of the PDnation 18V batteries in the Dewalt tools that use the 20 V batteries?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 14 күн бұрын
18 volt/20 volt is identical in voltage. The pack voltage of all DeWalt tools is 20 volts Max but 18 volt nominal. So DeWalt chooses to go with the maximum voltage for marketing. Whereas Makita and Milwaukee choose to use the nominal 18 volt for their marketing even though those are 20 volts Max as well. 21700 cell s are going to perform better than 18650s all day long. I feel that this PD Nation pack with one row of 21700s performs better than a twin row 4 amp hour/5 amp hour DeWalt pack.

Usb is not a rugged port so this setup is for occassional use only. The usb port will plug will evenyually fail. I think the usb-c only delivers 3amps at 5v or 15 watts. This would mean a minimum 3hr charge time for a 4amp-hr 20 v battery

USB C is now up to about 65 watts with a theoretical one coming out in the future that's up to 240 watts. They incorporate higher voltage connections to get more wattage. Something like 19 volts but don't quote me on that. I plugged it into a basic USB a to USB C port and it took about 3 hours. I then plugged it into a USBC to USBC high rate that my cell phone uses and it took about an hour and a half.

I don’t forget to charge them because I have a six port charger and there are always at least a couple on charge. That being said, there are tools from other manufacturers that I would like to have, but won’t buy them because I don’t want the hassle of buying a whole other line of batteries. Thanks to you, I have made a couple of adapters for a couple of older tools that were destined for the trash, so they use batteries that I already own. I may look into these batteries when they come available, they are simple, no bulky chargers, and they would open up tools from other manufacturers without having to invest in a bunch of different batteries.

Nothing is ever going to adapt to those. They are in their own voltage class with 6(24v) and 7(28v) lithium cells where virtually everything else goes by a multiple of 5(18/20v). None of these adapters ever convert the voltage. They are just an adapter plate that fit and pass through the voltage.

Is this a review ? YES is this a sales pitch ? Why YES !!! The review is good pointing out some flaws. The worst flaws that stop the tool from working have yet to be found. Charging with a "C" cable means it has slow charge. What is the charge time from dead to full ? With 2 Dewalts I can usually recharge 1 in time to switch with the 1 I am using up. this works because the charge cycles are quick but is this going to be the case with using a 'C' cable ?

Did you buy those INR21700-50S Samsungs when they were on sale at 18650 Battery Store? I tried but the website glitched not kept trying to apply some Spring 10% sale on top of the bigger sale and the price would go WAY UP. I needed a ton of them too. @@sixtyfiveford Exactly what I needed to know. Thanks! I went back and looked at my screen recording of the glitch and I could see it showed the correct price for a single frame right before the unwanted 90 cent discount broke the math. They applied it to the before-sale price and replaced the sale price with the result causing it to jump up over 53%. I wish I had pressed on like you did. I almost got ripped off by an impostor earlier today regarding these same batteries. They presumed to have them for 4.99. They look almost the exact same except they don’t have “Store” in the name. I actually called them thinking they were the same company to see if I could get the price they were supposed to be three weeks ago and they told me their site didn’t exist then. At least they were honest about that but that’s still extremely shady. 18650 Battery Store has been around for 13+ years now.

I was thinking about it today and maybe these 50S aren't that good. That DeWalt 10 amp hour on Home. Depot's website has one star overall. They're all failing, left and right. I went to repair a 10 amp hour today and one of the good original Samsung 50s was now a dead short and killing its parallel. Either that or there was just a bad run from 2-3 years ago when this pack was made
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 12 күн бұрын
@@sixtyfiveford I think it’s Option #2. Last year DeWALT was bundling FlexVolt batteries with the 2nd gen mowers instead (sticker over the DCB210s on the box) and telling customers that they didn’t have any replacements for warranty claims… but suddenly they are back everywhere… with the 2nd gen and new 3rd gen mowers. Hopefully they’ve worked out the issues. I’ve had a lot of suspicious failures myself where they end up internally shorted. It seems that they go out of balance first, then get too hot after you rebalance and continue running them, then short out after getting too hot. The whole reason the DCB210 is in a larger shell than the DCB206/208 must be for extra cooling but that doesn’t seem to be enough… at least for a certain batch of cells which seem to cook themselves. Yeah, DCB206 has the same cell count and uses the same size (21700) cells so the 50S would definitely fit the tighter housing. I saw where someone used these cells to rebuild a 12AH FlexVolt and I wonder if that would be a better application for these since you’d reduce the amperage drawn from each cell for a 20V Max tool.

Good quality batteries are not cheap. Doesn't matter what name is on them. Is charging with USBC better than your battery charger your tool already has, and you may already have more than one as you have bought more tools that included them? I don't think I'll be throwing mine away anytime soon. Still there is a place for these as OEM's probably make more selling batteries than selling the tools. Competition is good for consumers.

@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 9 күн бұрын
They won't ever hurt the tool that I've ever seen. However the reason they're so cheap is they put horrible batteries inside. If you bought one that claimed to be 6.0amp hours, it would probably only give you about 3.0 amp hours. They generally aren't high drain either so they can't supply a ton of current to the tool so the tool has less power. Running them off of a tool that draws a lot of power will generally destroy the battery pack itself but do no harm to the tool. However, they do serve a purpose if you wanted to run a device that doesn't draw a ton of power like a fan. That being said, in my experience, the off-brand batteries generally have a lifespan of anywhere from 3 months to maybe a year. We're an OEM battery is anywhere from 3 years to 10.

This is a great first step and a working example of what we want as consumers. This will open the door for them or others to make better and better as time goes on. However, there is a 240 watt usbc in the pipeline which would cut charging time for something like this down to the same as a fast charger from the manufacturers.

Why do they not have a docking system to charge them. The tool makers quickly found out that no one wants to plug in a cord to the battery to charge it. They want to drop it into a dock. IMO the sharp corners will be likely to be an issue when dropped, especially when attached to a tool. Great idea, good execution. If they get enough market traction, I could see them doing quite well as long as the tool manufacturers continue their own proprietary battery-to-tool interface solutions. But once they coalesce on a standard, Ceenr will be out of business.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 14 күн бұрын
I think the main selling point behind not having a docking system is not having a separate charger. We plug in our cell phones our laptops and everything else and I think they're seeing this along those lines. The square is unavoidable due to them trying to take up the minimal amount of space with the batteries inside. They would have to physically bump out the front/back and sides to be able to make a rounded edge. I guess they could make the front bottom and back round up though, but not the sides. This is a great first step and it'll open the door for them to make better or even other companies to make better. Manufacturers will never have a uniform platform. They have too much money and can buy their way out of any legal issues/ cover themselves with unique patents that require certain things, etc.

With USB C charging, there are some quality chargers that support simultaneously charging about 5 devices at once. Not a bad deal. The bad deal in dirty fast paced real work, dust, dirt, water, grime intrusion combined with USB pretty much needing to be mostly clean. Would add cost on top of needing soft corners etc. but an actual mechanical dust cap for the USB is needed. Until then, proprietary chargers and battery adapters between Milwaukee, Makita and DeWalt.

You would think so but the adapters have been for sale for 5 or so years now. But they could just be hiding under a million different small brands and not worth the headache. I do notice I took careful care and not using any of the OEM colors on the adapters and making them not fit into the charging docks. Patents are a funny thing that can be skirted in a lot of ways. Technically, I think Milwaukee is the only one allowed to use lithium batteries in their packs due to patents. But somehow others have skirted it and or paid royalties to Milwaukee for this.
