----------
VAR (video assistant referee) can be used to review four types of decision: goals and the violations that precede them, red cards, penalties, and mistaken identity when awarding a card. In some cases, a decision made by the main referee can be overturned; however, it must be a "clear error" for this to happen.

the argentina vs arabia martinez goal was valid! What happened there wasn't the arm, but rather that they compared the position to the wrong player, since the far left saudi defender is the one that keeps the goal onside, this was even confirmed by VAR's creator Nacho Tellado in an interview with Canal 13.

In all of the replays and still shots I’ve seen, it’s unclear. VAR have many more angles, I wish they would release them so we can see. Obviously it makes no difference now but would be good to know if VAR truly did make that mistake with their semi-automated technology; it would be a surprise and a setback for them if they did get this wrong.

I wonder about the clash between Cavani and Seidu in 2nd half stoppage time, which I imagine is what got the Uruguay side all up in arms about var. Personally I don't think it was a penalty as Cavani intentionally steps in front of Seidu to try and draw a foul during that footrace.

The first one on Boufal was not a penalty. Hernandez has possession and while he goes into Boufal, the Moroccan is approaching him at speed and so VAR would not determine that to be a foul. I’ll look at doing a video in any case. Not sure what the second potential penalty was but I’ll have a look.

At 7:48 in the video, it shows the still picture of Germany/Spain Rudiger offsides, but in the still picture it is clearly visible that the ball had already been kicked! Is there a V.A.R. animated still picture? That brings up another question...how is the determining factor of the moment in time that the offsides is called? Does the ball telemetry record the movement which I could see it being a determining factor? But if the play is in motions, is it still a human call on "time and space" when the infraction occurs? The other question is, is the hand ball that Spain had towards the end of the game was clearly visible on the replay; but, it is not even questioned or brought up by anyone...why? The Japan goal against Spain still picture of the ball, are there more still frames? Because, that angle of that still picture isn't perfectly perpendicular in accordance with the goal post visual acuity! Thanks in advance for any clarification!
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey Жыл бұрын
thanks for the questions. I watched the Ruddier replay in slow motion to be sure and he is 100% offside. Perhaps the still image I showed wasn't the ideal one to use. VAR use semi automated technology to figure out the exact point the ball leaves the foot although I don't know for sure exactly how accurate this is. I expect it is very accurate based on the number of cameras and angles they have available for reviews. With the Japan goal, it comes down to millimeters and a few frames; again VAR have access to more than we see on the screen and that's something that has to change; they need to show everything they are looking at for transparency.

watch some of the recent videos, including the most popular VAR moments and the Netherlands vs Argentina review as the Messi handball is included. You cannot eliminate wrong calls completely. And remember, 'wrong' is subjective based on individual interpretation of the laws and what you consider a foul is.
@jamieturtle

I think the foul on Kane from Upamencano was a penalty. Although the contact was inside the area, the entirety of Kane’s body was inside the area when he went down. Also big mistake from the referee for the foul from Théo Hernandez on Mason Mount; the referee awarded a penalty and a yellow card, I think that was a red card because of a denial of a potential goal scoring opportunity.

I really disagree with some decisions, but my big concern is the criteria require to use VAR, and the inconsistency in the decisions made by the referees (without the VAR) from one game to the other, it looked like every referee read a different rule book, or had a different meeting (and video reference) about how to call for fouls. Some plays where called by the referees and/or VAR, and similar o the same plays in other games not only where not called, but where not even reviewed (even when it was a penalty/no penalty, goal/no goal, clear and obvious hand situation).
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey Жыл бұрын
And your observations are fair; this is the biggest problem with referees and it’s not really their fault. They all have different experiences and perspectives and so they interpret the laws slightly differently. Consistency is what fans want but it’s very difficult to achieve across a wide spectrum of referees with different levels of experience. That’s why football and decisions by referees is so divisive!

I never saw a video for the Saudi decisions individually, but do you think the foot of that player's foot used was really the furthest player back? I know illusions can happen from specific angles, but if we use the Saudi defender between the RCB and the LB, it becomes absolutely clear that the LB is behind. Do you think they got this one wrong from the perspective of using the wrong player as the furthest player back?

The angle appears to show left back playing Martinez onside but VAR have multiple angles and semi-automated technology. They don’t make mistakes on the measurements. Yes I’ve included the Boufal incident in another video. It wasn’t a foul IMO based on the circumstances, especially considering Boufal’s motion (he is moving towards the ball at speed). It’s more of a collision than a foul, both players coming together. Amallah was held and based on previous penalties in the WC for the same thing, he should have been awarded a penalty for that. I'm not with you in at least a couple of decisions: * Both non given penalties to Canada against Belgium can't be a "question mark". They were clearly penalties. In the first one it doesn't matter if Vertonghen touched the ball first, he then proceeded to made a clear foul without the ball to Buchanan, it was clearly a penalty. And also the second one, Witsel made a clear foul on Laryea, why wouldn't that be a penalty? * I strongly disagree in saying that the Saudi penalty against Poland is an error. The contact exists, it was a foul inside the box, that's a penalty. * In the game between Uruguay and Ghana, I think that both penalties should've been called the same. I mean, if the contact is "minor" to Nuñez, it was also minor from Rochet, so neither penalty should have been awarded. I think most of these disagreements that I have with your position came from (what I think) it's an error in what you consider should make the VAR intervene. In many cases you say that "since it wasn't a clear and obvious error, the VAR shouldn't call the ref" (for example, in the Saudi penalty), but the VAR protocol from the IFAB itself says: "A video assistant referee (VAR) is a match official, with independent access to match footage, who may assist the referee only in the event of a ‘clear and obvious error’ or ‘serious missed incident’ in relation to: ..." So if it wasn't a clear error but it still was a missed penalty, the VAR should call the ref. Anyway, great job dude doing this video! This is a really good content.

Thanks Cristian. Some insightful comments and questions. Of course we have a slightly different perspective and so it’s ok that we see it perhaps a little differently. The decisions you mention and subjective calls that are borderline IMO so you can legitimately argue either way with justification. My opinion is just that, an opinion. VAR will of course ask the referee to review an incident if they believe the ref has missed a penalty but they must have determined that this was not a penalty in the Belgium case with Verthonghen. He 100% makes contact with the player on follow through but his initial touch of the ball is what probably meant the VAR official was undecided, therefore didn’t suggest a review based on a clear error by the referee. Obviously it confused the issue further that the AR incorrectly awarded offside.
@TheFabo97

I agree with most of the decisions but the tight ones, especially offsides are all debatable because of the VAR tolerance. In some cases VAR has a tolerance up to 30cm depending on the speed of the players. 11:37 For me, VAR should not be called when the decision is inside tolerance margins.

It’s a very good point. VAR claimed that their semi automated technology made it more accurate for offside decisions because of the data points for each player. Like every system, it’s not infallible.

It’s based on the angle we are viewing. VAR would have checked that via their semi automated technology system. It’s not impossible to make a mistake but it’s highly unlikely they missed that. Great video, as a Football/Soccer fan (When is it called Soccer & When is it called football?). It explained a lot to a casual Football fan. I still don't understand when can VAR become involved. Is it the Ref's call? Could you explain? I can not remember which team was involved but my favourite moment was when a player took a dive pretending to be injured & about 10 seconds later when he heard the Ref's whistle assuming the other player was being booked he shot straight up & when the Ref noticed that the Ref gave him a Yellow card. I like Soccer & used to play it at school but to see these morons diving when another player just brushes a player & sometimes there is no contact at all, it is embarrassing for soccer & turns fans off completely. A idea-If a player has been identified as diving without doubt there should be a special "Sin Bin" just like Rugby League where you are sent off the field for 10 minutes or there is another colored card say "Black" where you serve 10 minutes off the field & are you accrue demerit points. Once you have accrued a certain amount you are suspended for a certain amount of matches. Players hate being suspended so this might be a good deterrant.
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video! Soccer is more of a US word but it’s used in other countries also. Football or Futbol are the more common words in most countries with a strong football heritage. VAR reviews all major incidents leading to goals along with offside and anything the ref may have missed in terms of dangerous fouls for example. It is not used for smaller decisions as the idea is to allow the game to flow without too many interruptions. If VAR see something they believe the referee needs to look at, they suggest a full review for the referee at the pitchside monitor or sometimes they just give the ref direct info so he can make a decision without needing the monitor. Players love to go down and convince the ref they’ve been fouled; it didn’t used to be this way but the game has changed in the last 10-15 years. For American football and Rugby fans, soccer players probably look like wimps (rightly so most of the time). The ‘sin bin’ is something that has been talked about for a while now and I think most fans would actually like it to be introduced. We’ll see!

4:27 could you be so kind to explain how in your opinion how can this be a 50-50 call (but then in the video of the analysis of the final you deem the action on Di Maria to be a foul). In all respect to me they seem almost identical 😊
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey Жыл бұрын
Not identical. Witsel is to the side and also slightly behind Laryea. Dembele is directly behind Di Maria, impossible to get the ball from that position. Regardless of that, remember that any decision is subjective based on the referees’ perspective, inherent bias and experience. I made a video specifically explaining this logic so people can understand why we argue so much 😁
@GherdanSports
@GherdanSports Жыл бұрын
@@PaulSpacey i respectfully disagree. I do not believe the position (behind totally in Dembele case or behind and a bit laterally aside in Witsel case or any other whatsoever position) matters but whether it was contact or not. You as an expert know very well that the same standard applies to direct free kicks whether they are in the box (case in which it is a penalty kick) or 95 yards away from your own goal. In the video you have a picture with Witsel’s foot on the opponent’s calf (which is absolutelty enlightening). In all respect that contact is not within the laws of the game, it is not allowed to kick or trip the opponent’s calf with your foot. If anything, to me the contact on Di Maria is lighter and subject to even more constroversy than this (for sake of clarity i agree totally that Di Maria penalty was rightfully awarded). All in all, while i agree that due to some circumstances (speed of play, lawful contact until the foot on calf) this decision is not the easiest to make and the video replay may even be a bit decieving than the picture you posted, I would however respectfully expect from an expert as you are (super kudos to you for all the videos you made, such an underrated channel) to reconsider it. I believe that if you judge based on that picture alone you can’t continue to say it’s a 50-50 call. You even said “witsel clearly makes contact and doesn’t get a touch on the ball”. Then how come that contact without touching the ball with Witsel boot on the opponent’s calf can be anything else than a direct free kick (and since it is in the box, a penalty)
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey Жыл бұрын
I’ve just watched the replays of the Witsel incident again as I want to be clear. For some reason Laryea steps across Witsel with his foot; he’s not in front of him but partially to the side which makes it different to Dembele. And of course the same standard should apply to fouls inside and outside of the penalty area but we both know that many referees treat them differently, either subconsciously or intentionally. Laryea appears to be openly looking for the penalty and embellishes the contact; I expect VAR considered that. It’s still a potential penalty and depends on your subjective view of it. Just watched it again before finishing this comment and Laryea 100% throws his arms forward and embellishes the contact; kind of makes it look too obvious that he is playing for the foul. Still a tough call so I’m sticking with my 50/50 shout 😉

The referee who refereed the England vs France game was either biased to France or he just did not call fouls. I mean there were clear fouls on England’s players. The one where Saka got fouled, it should have been a free kick and as a result France’s first goal should not have counted. There are more than thousand error n mistakes made by the VAR, they act like they are incharge of the full game, this kind of system should be revised n updated again, cos if they intervene in every case there is no need of a referee n lines man/girls....The referee should take more than 90% incharge of the game, and he ever needs an assistant he or she can requested for a VAR...

You basically described what happens. VAR only intervenes at specific moments according to the protocol and the ref makes the ultimate decision anyway.

Before even watching the clip, I have to say something. No matter VAR or not, matchfixing won´t stop. We can argue as long as we want, we can make all explainations possible, but there will always be ´mistakes´.

Of course there will always be mistakes. And if a referee makes an intentional ‘mistake’, how would we know? 🤔

@@PaulSpacey We can´t know everything, but sometimes is visible. When you have 1 referee making mistakes in multiple matches against or for some teams, that isn´t coincidence. Or if 1 teams gets favourable dicitions in a row in multiple matches. Those things can´t get away, although lot of the fans turn blind when it´s their team in favour of the calls. But I just say that no matter how we look them, most of the penalties today are garbage. A lot of them can be given, but also can be not given. And both is right. Some hand balls also can be given and can not be given in the same time.

@@PaulSpacey And btw I didn´t see anything for all the Argentina calls. To me that one against Netherlands is in the line of the box, it should be foul, not penalty. The one with Croatia is very arguable, because the attacker trew himself into the goalkeeper, it was visible from the replays how the keeper tried to stay behind and make every possible effort to not touch the argentinian. To me that is not a penalty. And also the penalty in the final is just pathetic, there was a very slide touch on the socks between the 2 players. And the penalty for France in the end is quastionable, because that handball wasn´t intentional and it wasn´t stopping that ball from going into the net. So here are 4 penalties, very contraversial. But they weren´t in the video.

They’ve been addressed in other videos Mihail. And I don’t agree with you unfortunately but that’s ok; we have completely different perspectives so we are literally watching different things. The Alvarez and Croatia keeper challenge is an easy one IMO, but that’s just with my experience and perspective. Yours is different.

It’s interesting because he clearly didn’t want to get involved and make decisions; I do think with VAR some officials are now almost scared to make a decision and prefer to leave it and wait for VAR to intervene. It’s not good in that respect.

VAR definitely helps ref in many ways. But this sport more or less requires some level of drama and natural decision or POV of the ref. The offside technology completely makes the game less interesting and less "human". Yes it probably be more "just" and "fair". But getting offside for having your damn butt a bit too far outside is annoying. I think the rule must be adjusted to make the game and tech more human. Otherwise, just use robot with a whistle.

Explain the Croatia goalkeeper foul in Argentina vs croatia match fifa 22
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey Жыл бұрын
Both players going for the ball, Argentina player gets to the ball first, keeper crashes into him and commits a foul, impeding his progress. If the keeper touched the ball first, almost certainly not a foul in that case but the forward touches it first so is essentially in possession. Not massively different to Boufal incident vs France but the opposite happened as the Hernandez got to the ball first and him and Boufal then collided.

Croatia vs Morocco foul on Gvardiol?
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey Жыл бұрын
Yes this was a foul IMO but it seems the VAR officials didn’t feel it was an error by the referee, probably because of Gvardiol embellishing contact and going down theatrically a few steps after the contact. Still a foul for me.
