Every War of the Ring Game Ever

Күн бұрынThe Lord of the Rings perfectly summarized as a board game… just with some ridiculous what-ifs. The lotr trilogy may have become a tabletop board game perfect for two players, but there’s definitely still some quirks since players can do some whacky non canonical things with the shadow armies and free peoples. Cards that incentivize good strategies may cause certain events that go way off how the movies play out, and the free peoples are hilariously reluctant to go to war, even when attacked first!
Also the rulebook can be a little crazy, and Middle Earth has a ton of locations that you might take some time to find while playing during board game night. As a two player war game with a bunch of different win conditions and abilities, there’s bound to be some hilarious jank like Gandalf in Fangorn for some reason; who knows what shenanigans you can make heroes like Legolas and Gimli do!

This game is amazing. First play with my fiancée we got halfway through and paused, I went and watched a 4 hour playthrough taking notes the whole time, and then finished our play. We've been using my notes with the player aid ever since and this is now one of our favorite games!

Too relatable. Last time as Shadow my armies killed themselves since I was throwing only 1's and Aragorn went and took Mordor like 40 minutes into the game. After that I angrily threw all my dice onto the table and I kid you not, I got only 5's and 6's. Haven't played since :D

I had this game for like 4 or 5 years and I played like maybe 6ish times. Then this past week I played it like 3 times in a row. I just REALLY got back into this game. It really is timeless and the LoME expansion really adds stuff in a way that it is not overwhelming for a large game but gives you a LOT of really cool alternative options for you to keep games fresh and still keep its great balance. I truly love this game haha.

awesome man! This game just continues to get better for me as well, I'm trying to brainstorm different openings all the time. I wanna get the LoME expansion and the new one at some point too! For a game without variable player powers and a static setup, I just keep coming back, its sick. -Ashton

@@Shelfside haha Ares actually has a whole strategy guide on their website with statistics of certain hunt rolls and everything. I really got caught up on a bunch of the subtle strategies in this game after seeing it resurface a bunch (plus I got the BoFA collectors edition which is absolutely STUNNING and got me back into the game series). And LoME I think rocks things with a change in how you want to start the game changing things up a bunch. I am definitely excited to see how the new expansion will be as well! 01:40 Politics in "War of the Ring" seemed gamey until full scale war struck my homeland and no faction wanted to do anything about it. And then I remembered war actually started in 2014. But we were not "in war" yet, for foreign partners did not wanted us to.

We use the Ralph Bakshi animated version sound track... and everytime, when ever the music changes to theme of the Free peoples or The forces of Sauron, that side started winning.

Forgot the part where you get the wizard staff card well after gandalf has left the Fellowship and it becomes completely useless and just takes up a slot in your hand forever

now imagine playing the first edition, I thought I had gotten a great deal on the game, and now I know why, the cards are a quarter of the size with fonts to match. Yea it is a torture to play.

oh sheesh. One of the newcomer hurdles we have to keep going through is how the cards don't show the location they reference, so first games can get slowed down a LOT. I imagine 1st edition is just more yuck in that, and I heard that the DEW line was not as balanced? -Ashton

Cool video! I liked the originality and subscribed to the channel, but... I haven't played War of the Ring just yet (although I own a copy) so I must ask: Don't the players have some mitigation capabilities for the dice? - Because thinking of a situation in which you are yearning for a roll of 6 that never showed up - does looks quite frustrating...

Cheers! The mitigation really comes in through the battle cards, which are the second half of cards you hold in your hand. I've never found luck to be too much of an issue in determining who wins or loses, since you end up rolling a lot of D6's across the course of the game, and positioning and card usage is more important. -Ashton

I love this game but i find one thing annoying if the shadow player atacks a faction it should automaticly be at war... thats how i play it in my lets play.

thought I responded to this! I certainly prefer FP, but honestly playing both sides is awesome (unlike SWR where I only like playing as rebels). I find the shadow army management to be a little bit on the heavy side for me, but always too stressful because it is such a delight moving the pieces around, and you get to dictate the fights. -Ashton

heyo! I don't actually play with any expansions, and have been very satisfied with the base game for many many plays. Perhaps after 20+ games I will look into expansions -Ashton

Can't see the attraction myself, long, convoluted and loosely based on the films rather than the source material. There were relatively few battles in the trilogy so why people keep trying to develop a wargame from the material seems weird to me.

ahaha dang that's a really good one. I actually had this fight where I rolled all hits at helm's deep as FP, and my friend's Uruk-Hai rolled all misses even after rerolls and I just wiped his entire army, including a bunch of nazgul. Then I walked into orthanc :D -Ashton

Its almost like you havent read the books. The game is very accurate to the books and the politics about being attacked makes sense, especially when you consider Rohan constantly being attacked yet doing nothing about it because of the corrupted Theoden.

I'll be that guy; I still think critically, Star Wars: Rebellion is just better. You can debate about theme, but in the end, as rules / tension go, SW:R just nails it. I hate that I've been baited by the "multiple win conditions" aspect of War of the Ring. And change my mind on that; Free People war victory is only there to hold the Shadow player from zerging it down. It's barely a threat and if it ever happen, it's just that the SP did *a few* crazy dumb mistakes. It should never happen. But hey, I'd rather play War of the Ring than not playing any of those two games. :)

ohhh man! You just had to bring up the SWR! Both are awesome in their own right, and I find them actually hard to compare in my head because SWR has such an emphasis on leaders and the cat/mouse chase, while WoTR is always the same exact setup every time, but lends to feeling VERY much like the original trilogy because of that static setup. Perhaps I will do a every SW rebellion vid one day! -Ashton
