Once a player understands the game and knows how to negotiate then there is little actual luck in the game. Players can ask other players for information on a safe leader in exchange for spice to avoid an assassination, players can bribe atreides to know what a card up for auction is, bribe to see the spice blow deck or the storm deck. Players can bribe each other to sweaten an alliance deal or use truthtrance to prevent a player from lying. Game is all about information and how to obtain it.

I'm playing campaign with intercessor. It is a lot harder which while unbalanced with the game in general could actually be seen as more of a pro than a con.

Despite mixed reviews, I was initially hesitant. However, after an epic session of Last Light, I had a fantastic time! The components are solid, especially the ship minis. Adding more races for players to choose from is an easy change. I'll also consider potential tech adjustments, which shouldn't be too difficult. As a big fan of intense, head-to-head battling games like Blood Rage, TI4, and Eclipse, this game is right up my alley :) If I had the luxury of a day to myself, single and without kids, TI4 would be my go-to. But in my current reality, Last Light slots perfectly into my gaming schedule :)

I’m here for the heroscape mention! Having enough of the classic game is pretty key to enjoying it unfortunately. There’s some really fun armies, they just get sooo expensive. I’m definitely getting the new stuff, but I’mostly just excited for the synergies that will mix with the old stuff I already have.

This gives me big Darksiders vibes (and not just because of the theme but also the art style and player abilities) which is very cool, but the game itself doesn't really seem like my thing. Feels a little generic. It speaks to your review quality that I watched the whole video regardless!

This review was exactly what I needed to justify my feelings about the 3rd edition. I've had multiple friend groups be introduced to modern board games with Betrayl (2nd) and when we decided to try out this 3rd edition, the Haunts all felt a bit stale in comparison. We've yet to have a Haunt that envoles the blend of campy horror of 2nd edition. (Spoiler Alert for 3rd edition: Our first scenario was that the real estate agent for the house we were all touring was trying to kill everyone with a demon. Basically the Haunt revealer was thematically killed and took over a demon, and there was really no special mechanics. And thats been a theme for many of the scenarios. The mechanics are streamlined, but it comes at the cost that many Haunts end up feeling similar. Also, the Characters are all pretty balanced; Oliver "Swift" is supposed to be 3rd editions Flash, but his speed is the same as 3 other characters at 5! And they got rid of the Crazy Man and Scared Girl Omens!

Can i get clarification at 15:59 . You mentioned an opening hand of four cards. I read through the manual and googled for the answer but the only response i got was your initial hand is only 2 cards, one from each event deck. Can someone chime in with the answer?

The underlying logic of the game is unbelievably bad, excessive repetition, lack of meaningful choices in the story... The most overrated game since years.

Yeah the Rulebook is definitely my biggest con for the game. But I love Angels in Fantasy settings, so this really is right up my alley. And yes base rings would instantly fix the problem of distinguishing the Angels on the board.

Great list! I agree bout Bridge being most influential card game. I think Poker takes the top in us culture, including the betting/gambling mechanic which adds a unique element since the stakes can change hand to hand. Bizrre you can win big on a worthless hand, and lose big on a powerful one. Incredible game. Another important influential game mechanic is the 'race' game: Sorry, Pachisi, and Backgammon still played by millions in the Middle East. Monopoly is probably a variation of this with the added commerce/trade element. Racing to Purchase the most properties.

Legacy games made the box of unlocked modular content with new rules a popular design even in non-Legacy games. - Mechs vs. Minions - Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle - Mind MGMT - Gloomhaven (which is a wannabe legacy game) - Oathsworn The influence of Legacy games on the hobby isn't simply more Legacy games.

I feel like 1829/1830 for economic and stock games and Agricola, or something else, for modern euros should've been on there. One of either Gloomhaven, Magic, or heroquest could go I think. I don't think your choices are bad, but just have knid of a crimped view of the whole genre. An adventure game, a tricktaker, area control, roll & move/trading, TCG, deckbuilding, stock game, modern euro, party/social game, one more? i feel like delineating the important subgenres or most prominent mechanics first would help.

Love this game. Been collecting everything over the years and own it all now. I didnt deal with big monsters at all. I viled the tips off and glued them on transparant bases, so much better! As for checking their stats, there’s a perfect fine summary document to print on bgg. Only con remaining is that searching tiles can be a hassle, especially with more expansions.
@Metroidam115 күн бұрын
Engine Building and Worker Placement seem to have a bigger impact on modern strategy games. Most games I’ve played have that mechanism somehow. Maybe I’m biased based on the games I play.

It seems like the main issue with the core mechanics (putting aside specifically prototype issues) is the late game balance is written around everyone going for very high corruption. At a glance, would being required to take lament (instead of choosing to throw it away) once you become corrupted fix it? Would that have the effect of meaning the driving force of the game is trying not to kill one another, while the boss tries to survive? It's hard to tell without knowing how much lament is handed out, I'm just curious what your thoughts are
@Shelfside4 күн бұрын
You do get a lot of lament later on from removing the boss cards (usually everyone gets 3-4), most of which I usually throw away, so yeah that could work. Though imo it's a less interesting solution cause it basically guarantees everyone maxes out 3/4's through the game every time instead of riding the razor's edge like in Cthulhu DmD. -Daniel

Bridge is an odd one, I'd pick another trick taker with a wider player base like Hearts, but "classic trick taker" would do. While you're on cards rummy features set collection of various types that's painfully common in euros. I don't think Gloomhaven is very influential mechanically, a couple of games in exactly the same genre doesn't count. I wouldn't include chess as I think modern games are more likely convergent solutions to simulate the same problem. Same with Risk. CE, magic, Dominion, Pandemic, werewolf absolutely. There's even a werewolf tv show in the UK The Traitors. In wargaming there's a whole different set of influential games, kriegspiel, We The people for card driven games. 1830 is huge for 18xx but it's so niche it's not top 10.

Hearts is a good one! I played a lot of that. Bridge just seems to have the edge in the trick-taking popularity from my point of view. -Ashton
