REM everybody hurts Reaction. This song's lyrics took me to some dark places, but thankfull R.E.M. gave me hope at the same time.
Its lyrics are so relevant to every human and the singer really dug deep into his soul to bring out a performance like this.
I dare anyone to listen to this R.E.M. song and not feel a shiver.
Enjoy this chilling performance.

I really like this song. But ! It came out in 1992. I liked it right away. Then a few months later my father passed. This song reminded me of him every time I heard it. Then a few months later my older brother was murdered. I got that news in the evening while I was listening to this song thinking of our father. If that wasn't tough enough. A few months after that it came on over the radio in my car, I had to change the station as I was going to visit my mother in hospital. I did not want to show up feeling sad. Then I was told by her Dr.s that she had terminal cancer and would be gone within days. As if I hadn't already been beat down enough. I leave the hospital a while later to head to work. I'll be damned if this song doesn't come on again on the other channel I had chosen earlier. Needless to say, by the time I got to work I was a mess. I still like this song today. When I do listen to it, I try to recall as many happy memories as I can of Mom, Dad, and Brother. Yes it does hurt. But I will continue to listen to this song to help keep those memories alive.

REM does this and they do that. I think the darkest song I've ever heard (from them or anyone else) is *Orange Crush.* It's about the Vietnam war, and it just hits you in the gut. But, it's a really good song. A "that" song would be *Stand.* It's one that you just want to sing along to.

When this song came out I was at the happiest and most stable point in my life... And I was there for a lot of years.... It didn't hit me emotionally at all at that time. I just liked the melody. But then the bad times came and brought me as low as a person can go but somehow I held on. I didn't hang in there for any reason for myself... I did it for my children. Don't ask me how I did, because I couldn't tell you how, but I did. But listening to this now, I'm glad I did. Because I have a little granddaughter now and she makes it all worthwhile.

*Harry* I'VE been "silently" watching your reactions.! I *GREATLY* appreciate the mature & thoughtful reactions you provide.! OK.... first { The genesis of this song }.... it was a message to his friend *Kurt Cobain* the one and only creative genius behind Nirvana.! Some called him the John Lennon of their generation.! He knew of Kurt's chronic stomach issues, drug & fame issues.! And his deep depression. Sadly, as we all know, the message came to late.! Much to the dread of Michael Stipe, the lead singer & Co-Writer of R.E.M. which indeed stands for *Rapid Eye Movement* they arise thru college radio fame in the 80's out of Athens, Georgia.! That's enough for now.! I was an active, touring musician at that time and can offer up what I remember or was told from time to time.! I rarely comment and most of the reactors I see are digital hustlers in it only for the like & subscribe bullshit, which sickens me.! But I do appreciate your thoughtful feel to this medium... David.....

clark I'm so very sorry for your loss. As days come then go I truly hope you will have peace, that as months come then go that you'll be able to smile when thinking of your man, finally as the years come then go that you'll have a peaceful, wonderful & beautiful memories that touch your heart & soul to gently remind you that you're alive with a life worth enjoying. . There's really nothing that one can say to such a loss. I can feel your pain, I say this bc I have a loss that can't ever be replaced. Our loss will be with us until we are also called home. Please know that my faith is mine.I don't know yours & I don't need to. Please don't take any offense to any part I say & send. My words are given with the greatest respect & of love. So please relax your thoughts for today, tomorrow will be another 24 hrs. for you to manage without the other half of you. I send this with love from one human being to another. Be patient with yourself for you are in a place that none wish to be but sadly we each will be there one very difficult day. Sending this with love & sympathy from one broken heart to another. It will be easier with time. Shirley (aka Akita)

Stripe’s vocal performance is stunning. But don’t sleep on Mike Mills’s harmonies. Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam) said Mills was R.E.M.’s “secret weapon.” He plays great bass lines, he plays keyboards, and his voice is the perfect counterpoint to Stipe’s. It’s smoother, cleaner, purer - it acts as an angelic counterpoint to Stipe’s rawer, more emotional singing. Mills even sings lead on some great songs like “Texarkana” and “Near Wild Heaven.” You should check either of those out sometime, whether for a reaction or just for pleasure. This isn’t my favorite R.E.M. song, though I love it. But you can make the argument that it’s their most important song. I fully believe it has saved more people from suicide than any other song ever written. Incidentally, the original video for this song is a work of art in its own right.

You really must see this with the original video made by REM. It is so much more powerful than just the words Michael Stipes sings.

You need to watch the video to get the full impact. If only this song was available 53 years ago... it could have made things easier. It's "cathartic"

The original video had a suicide hotline number at the end of the video. A great song I hoped it helped many people.
