Foster Wallace was a genius and he was spot on. I've seen many atheist miss his point because "it's not the same thing." They say that while wasting their whole money in whatever they obssessed with. It's really funny how we claim to be rational beings while being completly blind to our own irracionalities.

I absolutely HATE shorts but I HAD to click and like this. as an previously agnostic existential philosopher of over two decades and now a new believer dwf was right, his full speech emanates the spirit of divine mercy and the teachings "a course in miracles" is trying to convey. it's beautiful worshipping but being neither atheist nor theist nor deist but neither and all.

Atheism doesn’t deny worship of things though, it just denies specifically worshipping a god, so of course you can be an atheist 🧐Seems that DFW is assuming atheists deny their need for other things to depend on and is thereby undercutting itself, but it is not.

I tend to think DFW is a Tibetan Buddhist follower. He always mentions spiritual materialism. It is amazing to learn something about a faith then to fall back on science. It just further backs up reason and motivation. Sometimes that is the thing that never makes sense? Why do false leaders try to lead?

I wonder why he would think everyone worships something. And I suspect being a theist means something more than, say, overcommitting to bodybuilding aesthetics.

To be fair to atheists, we don't neccessarily deny the potential existance of god, we simply dismiss your assertion that you know anything about god and that we should worship him too. We aren't buying the bullshit. DFW might have been making a point, I just question it's necessity. I don't worship anything let alone a god. I don't even think people who believe in god, necessarily worship god. If they did the world would be a different place. Do we value things, sure. I think he is assuming to much. Bold claim.🤷

Start with a misrepresentation of atheism, atheism isn’t a belief system nor is it a worshipful idea 🤷🏻‍♂️
@mwesch
@mwesch Жыл бұрын
This isn't about atheism. He is using that as a rhetorical device. He just wants us to see that we all place some things higher on our hierarchy of values than other things and if we place money or beauty at the top of our hierarchy, we are in trouble. He himself was an atheist and here he is just noting that maybe there is some value in religion even if he himself struggles to believe. This is originally from a graduation speech he gave at Kenyon College in which he assumed that his audience was mostly atheist and he wanted to open their minds to help them understand religious people, and see value in their perspectives. I am also an atheist and I understand the frustration of being constantly misunderstood and incorrectly defined in relation to other religions when atheism isn't really a religion at all.
@sloaiza81

Thats exactly what he said. Atheism isnt a belief system because it's the absence of a belief system. The point we all have belief systems and things we worship. Boy did you swing and miss.

@@mwesch This clip is completely taken out of context. If you’ve listened to it, he’s not saying there’s value in religion. This aspect of his speech is merely to reinforce how strongly people value things such as beauty ie to the same degree as someone who worships god. He’s in fact saying the opposite; that we shouldn’t be so devoted to something and maintain a bit of perspective. DFW would never make a point about the value of religion.

I don't disagree with you however he is making the case that we should cultivate empathy, awareness, compassion, and something beyond our self, which is a core goal of all religions.
