I am 74 years old and have been playing mandolin, banjo and mountain dulcimer. I've been playing violin for 3 weeks. I have a teacher who is helping but I must say that your videos are VERY valuable to me. I always feel like I should be playing "well" in a very short period of time, but this is proving to be a great challenge for me. Other instruments came a lot easier in learning. I am already indebted to you and spend a lot of the evenings watching and listening. Thank you for this great work.

Today is my first day practicing without stickers... it's kind of scary but I think I really have to train my ears and my muscles rather than my eyes and this vid is definitely helpful! Thank youuuuuu!

I really appritiate how you give instructions, such as lifting the elbow to make the bow lighter on the up bow, and also explaining why we should do that. It makes it much easier for me to under why I should do things a certain way. You are an exellent teacher!

Maintaining the position of the bow on the contact point can be a little too much on the first try, with the constant adjustment on the wrist and the arm. So we can divide the bow into virtual 4 parts: The middle part of the bow 3:00 The tip/upper half 4:42 Lower half 5:49

I have been doing that left hand exercise since I first saw this video many months ago but instead of slurring, I usually play it detache to help improve the coordination of a bowing right hand and fingering left hand and concentrating on when to move the finger to the fingerboard (a nanosecond ahead of the bow movement). great exercise! thanx.

Just started and I try to do things I will need that make me comfortable doing things with the violin like moving hand and arms, holding the violin while moving hands and arm, I use an unrosined synthetic hair bow I don't want to hear it, most of it is mechanical because I believe if the mechanics are natural, (hands, elbows, holding, movements, etc) you can easily make adjustment when things aren't working or follow lesson advise. My warmup: I do vibrato on all string while bowing, I do quick 'scale' (pure mechanical I don't care about notes) on every string at 1st, maybe 3rd position, on some of this concentrating on the push, pull, wrist bow action, I bow all the time and always monitor both elbows and string crossing as I change strings, I go to max position and do an arpeggio which I expect will help me become comfortable holding the violin this is the most awkward position and balance and I have to rotate the neck slightly to free my elbow, arpeggios at 0 and 3rd position, shifting full octave scale where I try to play the right notes, Heifetz 1 finger per string lifting 1 finger at a time exercise, given by someone with Boston Symphony that worked with him, at nut and max position.

could you make a video showing the proper angles that the horsehair should be pulled along the strings. for example, do you ever hold the hair flat against the strings or do you always tilt the bow so that the hairs on the side closer to the fingerboard are making most of the contact? - are there different angles for different techniques or desired sounds? thanks

@@urieluy2025 thank you for your suggestion but this is not really what I'm asking. The above link discusses WHERE the bow contacts string. My question is about HOW the bow contacts the string. At what angle are the hairs held against the string? thank you.
@JoyLeeViolin
@JoyLeeViolin 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Iggy, we adjust the angles of the bow constantly depending on the dynamics. In general for softer tone, we use tilted bow hair and for louder tone flat hair. I hope this gave you some ideas. Happy violin practising!

Hello am a fan of your lessons , if I may ask how can one train playing violins with the left hand without looking at the strings
@JoyLeeViolin
@JoyLeeViolin 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mbaw, in order to play the violin without looking, one has to spend a certain amount of time until the muscle memories are built. However it's nothing wrong to look at your hands during playing. One should use all senses to play the violin better. Happy violin playing! :)
