I was about to write the same thing Greg!! This gentleman should set up a consulting business! I'm saving this video and I'll watch it again closer to the time I plan on going to the Philippines (about a year from now). I've been there three times for a total of 7 months and I recognize many of the points he's brought up but this video is a great refresher course!

@@relikatigbak8731 His very point was that it is impossible to use any other country's format in the Philippines. That is where he failed when he assumed his vast knowledge would get him by in the Philippines, which it did not. I would assume that he would say that you also could never use the Philippine format anywhere else.. This is a very unique situation and country. He had to reinvent himself and forget everything he thought he knew to be successful. (This was my take on this video)

Gotta admit, I think this is the best interview you've done. This guy has an unbelievable amount of insight into Filipino culture. kevinplusfun, Philip became a humble man as he explains his arrogance like so many before him and after was his undoing! His insight shows Philip's intelligence! My highly educated Filipina wife of 37 years grew up in the Philippines wealthy. Her knowledge of her culture enabled me to enjoy living in the PI fully. Men who come here with expectations, and a "know it all attitude" SHOULD, in my opinion, become victims of their own behavior and ignorance!

I am from the UK where "My word is my bond" used to exist up to the 80's. I believe that the arrival of immigrants, that rarely stuck to their promises, made "My word is my bond" finished. Crime in the UK and northern Europe has increased exponentially over the last 30 years and hence I moved to Thailand.

Why because he doesn't want them to have accountability?
@Calamity_Jack
@Calamity_Jack Жыл бұрын
@@Rocket9944 What do you mean by that? Filipinas have as much accountability as any other women do. It's just a different situation there and so, different accountabilities. For example, they're expected to provide financial support for their extended families. If that's not an accountability, what is? I think his main point was, understand where they're coming from so you can better understand why they act the way they do, and thus avoid disappointment on both sides.

Subscribed 2nd time to you, Mark, after this interview. This is one of the best interviews I've listened to in this channel. I feel his wife when he insisted his ways and not hearing his wife's suggestion, then losing millions. Having a half-Oz-half-Brit employer who invested so much in the Philippines but kept failing/losing millions in pesos, I am never amiss in reminding him to try OUR ways and not to keep on insisting HIS system, if he really intends to be successful here. Sometimes, I even mock him that he might be deliberately failing to make it appear to his conscience that he is doing charity work to poor Filipinos so he can enter heaven. Good thing, he is not blaming us fully for his failures. Will share this to him :)

Beware of ever getting into business with anyone there because as he said their word to a foreigner means absolutely nothing. Not being bitter here just have learned from experience. Americans and all foreigners should learn this before you ever think about living in the Philippines full time. It is a beautiful country and the people can be wonderful. Just be aware of your cultural differences before you live there full time.

Loved this interview, Mark! Great questions and discussion, you guys knocked this one out of the park. Phillip really imparted some insightful and hard-won wisdom. However, I must admit by the end I felt kind of sad for the Philippines. Because when you have a populace that mostly lives only for the moment, doesn't really adhere to or expect others to adhere to promises made, and takes advantage of one another like it sounds like they do there, I honestly don't see their quality of life improving much anytime soon. And maybe that's just fine with them. But it's still disheartening, knowing how much better it COULD be if only. Anyway, good stuff!
