I watched all 7 hours of the original vod shortly after DougDoug uploaded it to KZfaq. It's absolutely wild. Surprisingly, it doesn't feel like cut very much out of this edited version. There were a few rooms past the doors of Trivia that he didn't include, where some funny jokes happened, but they were irrelevant to the search and didn't last too long.

The asterisks are hilarious even when you know why the AI's using them: in a lot of programs framing a segment of text with asterisks on either side makes that text bold. The AI is mimicking two of the most common uses for it: putting stress/emphasis on particular words OR indicating that the text between the asterisks is a description of an action being performed. Of course in neither case would a reasonably person actually pronounce the asterisks.

It's funny to see Doug playing this and you reacting to it. One of the programmers at Humongous Entertainment (the company the made Pajama Sam) was good friends with my parents so I grew up playing basically their whole series. An actual "my uncle works at Nintendo" moment. You mentioned the Backyard Sports games, those were originally all made by Humongous Entertainment as well. The company was most known for the Puttputt series, the Pajama Sam series, the Spyfox series and the Freddie Fish series as well as the Backyard Sports games.

The reason why he couldnt use voicelines from the game, well first of all cause its funnier the way he did it. But also cause theres a whole lot of issues in just taking a persons voice and slapping it on an AI. Its more "ethical" to ask your friends to give you permission to use their voice on a weird AI that could say whatever, than it is to take a persons you dont even know voice without their knowledge. Then theres all kinds of copyright and such questions to ask like is the voice of this character and the voicelines recorded for the game the property of the company who made them and is training an AI on copyrighted material to mimic that copyrighted material breaking that copyright. Its just much less muddy to do it like he did.

so, quick explanation about this game: it's devs also made some other similar quests like PuttPutt series. most of those games have a thing in common: the majority of things you can interact with don't do anything useful. a funny sound, small weird animation, and so on. that's why there are some things in the game that look out of place, like egg or spinning pole or dancing furniture

Also if I am remembering properly, Doug didn't want to use the original voice for ethical reasons. I think. Also the voice files are too compressed.

Putting an asterisk before and after a word when typing causes it to look like *this* and makes the word appear bolder. Basically, Chat GPT is trying to put emphasis on thise words using asterisks, but since it's reading what it's typing, it's saying asterisk before and after each word it's emphasizing. Surrounding multiple words with astersks to make them bolder is also often used to descibe something happening, like this. Me: *enjoying this video* Seems Chat GPT has picked that up too.

I was inspired to revisit these old childhood favourites of mine when I saw Doug make this video. I wonder if he'd consider doing this again with another Pajama Sam game, or even a different Humungous Entertainment game. When I revisited the first game myself, I found a couple of funny coincidences. As others have likely mentioned, the game changes some things randomly every time you start a new game. There's this talking clock character who Sam could've met in Darkness' house, who knows already that Sam is there to defeat Darkness, and Sam asks him "you mean I'm not the first one?" to which the clock responds "oh, heavens no." Of course what they meant is that other kids have tried to defeat Darkness (get over their fear of the dark) before Sam, but it would've been spooky if this had happened in Doug's game. In the stream Doug starts referring to the earlier iterations of Sam as his "brothers". In-game Sam can also mention that he has a big brother, Mark. The "Brain Ticklers" quiz doors actually said that Sam's interests include Skydiving, channeling ancient spirits, and stamp collecting. Sam only denied that he collects stamps. I don't know about you, but Sam seemed to channel a few ancient spirits over the course of this stream. Perhaps this is the influence of High Demon Elgrim. Babagaboosh!
