I moved back to Michigan after 25 years in Texas and an early retirement. Texas became less attractive in the last 10 years. The heat is NOT the problem. My property taxes were ridiculous! You will pay little to no income tax in Michigan as a retiree, compared to the excessive property taxes in Texas, so the argument about no income tax in Texas is a bogus argument. My 1800 sq foot home was approaching $9,000 per year in property taxes! This was in an average suburb, nothing fancy. And, with the cost of homeowners insurance, and various other costs, Texas is NO bargain at all. As a retiree, if you want to take off a few months in the winter, that's always an option, but I have stayed the entire winter this year due to caring for my elderly mother. I am so happy to be back home in Michigan! Texans can stay in Texas!

I find property taxes to be brutal here. I also find auto insurance to be another huge tax... also find that health insurance is expensive and another tax. These things can be fixed and you can have an awesome place to live AND retire. What is the purpose of building wealth if you retire elsewhere and take all that money with you? Politics have greatly affected this state and not for the better. Michigan needs to open up and not for the Chinese.

My husband was a Texan (born and raised - can't be a Texan if you weren't born there). He moved to Michigan when we decided commuting was getting monotonous in 2010. He LOVED Michigan. The weather, the natural resources and how beautiful our state is with REAL lakes and forests. Mind you - we didn't live near any large cities. What I figured out about Texas as opposed to Michigan. He would always ask me HOW LONG it took to get somewhere to which I'd reply how many miles away it was. He'd get frustrated and ask how long it takes to get there. After driving in Texas I knew why he asked that - it takes forever to get anywhere. 60 miles isn't "about an hour" - more like 2 hours... 2 miles away can be 20 minutes away. For as "great" as their hospitals supposedly are - they're pretty unimpressive compared to Michigan's. Michigan doesn't have Mexican food like Texas does but we did find some great places here. He didn't like Michigan politics but living well away from larger liberal cities - it didn't impact daily life. We were in Texas in 2021 for about a month (he was there a bit longer) - when he came home to Michigan I joked that I wondered if he had wanted to move back to Texas when we retired. He said he wanted to spend the rest of his life here in Michigan. He did. He passed away last July. Had he not - we planned to move north - he loved going to Northern Michigan.

I am so so sorry for your loss Robyn, that is devastating. Thank you for sharing some memories! It’s funny you mention about miles and minutes. Everyone I chat with always messes with me about that from out of state. Several Texans I have helped really enjoy the outskirt living options here in Michigan and agree that they are not affected in anyway, despite their views and beliefs being different politically. I was talking with a client who is from the south and how his initial complaint was about politics, and letting Detroits Rocky reputation cloud his judgement about the state as a whole, but once he came here, he found there’s so much more to that state than Detroit and opposing political views.

@@LivingInMichigan People from other states think Michigan IS Detroit. Once you get away from Detroit and the suburbs pf Detroit - it's very different. They also have to understand that there are many very cool things in Detroit. Eastern Market, Mexican Town, the stadiums... I have to laugh - everyone I've met from Texas loved to fish. They have like one huge lake and it's man made....lol (I know there are more but -) In most areas of Michigan you couldn't walk 5 miles without falling in a lake, river, or stream. We have fish too. Wildlife - deer and turkeys in the back yard aren't unusual here. Our coastlines are beautiful and no hurricanes!

@@robynjustrobyn6675 So true about fishing. The upside to Texas fishing is the fish grow so much bigger, due to winter over here stunting the growth. Over here we are happy with 2-3 lb bass, and ecstatic reeling in a 5 lb one, but in Texas it seems that’s every cast! 😂

My parents were transferred to Mi in 2002 and I moved here in 2017 to close so that I will be able to care for them when the need arises & so my daughter can have a close relationship with them as opposed to a 1 year visit. At the end of the day, it is all about family and most Texans that I know here….that is the reason we move.

🙂 wow this is interesting as a texan!! Would have never thought michigan was attractive to some of us! As far as the housing, yes its true!! We have no state income tax, but we have one of the highest property taxes in the country. The prices of these homes in the big 4 cities have skyrocketed. Im seeing more and more Texans who are struggling to pay rent and mortgage. Not to get political, but Texas is a harsh place to fall on hard times in. State benefits here are harder to qualify for and u dont receive as much. Im referring to welfare folks. They want u working and pulling urself up down here. If u cant, for whatever reason, this is a tough place to get back up.

Yes as a New Yorker who transplanted to Texas I am realizing this. In NY they put money into programs for the people so there is a safety net. But they don't put money into the infrastructure so it's crumbling! Texas has updated and new infrastructure but the people are left to fend for themselves. The question is why they would have moved to the city if that was a big concern. They must have been hoping to make buck on real estate appreciation, because if they wanted to be near Detroit but have low crime, there are many, if not all the suburbs, that you can live in, but be 20 minutes from downtown thanks to our freeway system. Something seems off.

With the Michigan state legislature shifting to Democrat, and the executive branch being run by a virtual Democrat dictator, some relocated Texans will find their freedoms severely limited. I feel like Texas has a true dictator and I also feel like our rights aren’t safe here. They say we can’t buy alcohol certain times because we are responsible enough to make our own decisions. Same goes with pot, apparently some religious dude thinks I can’t show enough discipline to not smoke weed and get crazy. And doctors are leaving because the dictator wants to make women’s decisions too so many OBGs won’t even work here. None of these are decided by white religious zealots in Michigan. As a life long Texan from Dallas, I can confirm this. Looking to Michigan myself. It was a live let live type of red state but now it’s led by a Christian extreme fascist Greg Abbot who is literally spending our public tax dollars on fighting culture wars, and with gerrymandering it’s almost impossible to elect a different party. Beto came close ! Sorta ..The weather is worse, the humidity is horrible due to the necessary man made lakes everywhere because hey, 8 million people in DFW need water. Then there’s COL, since 2016 home prices have doubled. They were affordable before, now it’s absurd. The maga politics have killed the pleasantry and free ideals that many moved here for, and the property taxes that went up 40% just since abbot started his dictatorship. It’s a hell hole in Texas if you don’t have a 100k plus income now. Infact, you need to make 115k to qualify for the average priced home in DFW now. And nature? Beauty? Forget about it, everything is private except a few small city parks. Michigan sounds wonderful in comparison, not saying it’s going to be perfect but not havung legal pot and right to choose are two things that show Texas is all about big government when it comes to making personal private decisions. They wanna do it for you! Sad part is the majority of people in the metros are like me, but like someone else said, many people are ignorant and uninformed.
