I have done something similar with paint cans, they already have handles. I used stencil premade patterns as a punch guide, then I wired mine with a small bulb like a night light bulb. Replaced the lid and then you can hang them or sit them on the ground whatever you like.

Lol I watched this and immediately thought the “freezing cans” part was not necessary, however the frozen drinks in a cold can looks pleasing for summer time 🌞

I’ve made similar luminaries for all different seasons and my tip or hack is to grab a solar light (that come with a stake to go into the ground) at Dollar Tree. Remove the top part so you just have the round solar panel with the attached light and optional the clear frame that’s around the actual light. Place into the can before attaching the handle. Once finished hang anywhere the sun touches the panel. It will light up beautifully and automatically at night. Note* I typically keep the clear frame attached so it gives the light and solar panel height. Helps with the solar panel get more sun and the light placement is more ideal as it’s more centred inside the can highlighting the pattern. But definitely beautiful either way. Jute is very cute if you're using electric candles; however, if you plan on using tea lights you may want to use wire for the handle. That's what I do, as the inside becomes quite hot & spontaneous combustion is a real thing~ Those little knots hanging on the inside could catch fire very easily, as well as the "handle".

Back in the day - you could buy large versions of these with one-shaped tops. There were many holes punched with differently shaped hole punches. Candle(s) placed inside would flicker, and the flickering would cause rippling light patterns on the walls and ceiling. Very trippy. Even more so when you blow a lungful of smoke over them, and the rays illuminate the smoke in a 3D mandala. : )

That's a great idea, it makes it easier to put holes into the cans without causing damage. I wonder if this icy idea would work with the more fragile aluminum soda/beer cans? Aluminum cans dent so easily and I'd think the ice would prevent that when we want to put holes into it.

Draw the pattern you intend to “punch” before you freeze the can and the frosting won’t be a problem. You can also tape a paper design to the can and punch around the outline to make silhouettes of your loved ones or fav music artists. I like to use tin snips to cut a cute design at the top and bottom of my cans. This craft can get as elaborate as you can. It’s an easy fun way to shine beauty into your life. I've been doing this for years. At my son's graduation party spray painted them the schools colors with the schools letters as well. That was in 2011 that was my biggest project. Also do for holidays.

Patio lights for the summer! Yay! I'm pulling my empty cans out of my recycling box right now. I love the reminder about how to make these lanterns and also the decorating ideas. Now I have a new project to get ready for summer. Since I will probably use a hammer and nail to punch the holes, stabilizing with the ice is a good idea.

They are cute to make for Halloween too. I first learned this back in the early 90's from Martha Stewart - I loved all her vintage Halloween ideas they are all STILL amazing!

I've made these...so cute. I love the copper one. Lining them up somewhere with a name, or the seasons are neat too. You can also make garlands with them for Christmas or other holidays. Yours are pretty!

I think you might want to use wire instead of twine in order to avoid burning down your front porch. A few weeks ago I drilled assorted size holes in four cans to slide over the LED lightbulbs of my bathroom fixture. I recommend a pointed awl instead of a blunt nail set for starting the holes. That way you can forget about the freezing part.

Go to a restaurant and ask when they do prep for their food. This varies from location to location. Get larger cans and have fun doing tiki torch tops, Halloween sidewalk lights, and even better, Christmas lights that fit your esthetic. You can use Sterno chafing dish fuels that burn out fast but the light is brilliant. Don't forget the can lids, these can be arched and reattached to make a safety lid. Use two holes for each low end and run wire in to attach the lid. These get really hot so use proper safety and care.

I use a wheat bag to hold my cans in place, works perfectly for any size can.

Instead of having the towel flat before punching, scrunch each side towards the can and it will not roll. Nice reminder to repurpose cans for other uses.

CoolIdea BTW the Punch you used in the video is actually a NailSetting Tool the small pointy end is Hardened which makes it fine for doing this Project i’ve been a Outdoor Enthusiast for many years and that includes Boating ,Backpacking , and other ways of Camping in thecWilderness i usually bend wire Coat hangers to make a Handle on TinCans i carry in my Backpack to heat up Water on smallCamfires that i use for MealPreparation, Instant Hot Cocoa , and Hobo Coffee the small cans like Soup or Vegetable sized ones with a Tea Candle will make a cheap easy Lantern that doesn’t blow out super easy i’ve even use them to hang above a small Table at nighttime on my boat to eat a late meal under the altars it creates. just enough light to see what you are doing and the ridged Coat hanger handle makes it easy to hang using Clothespins , Spring Clamps ,or even a Bungee Cord for my Small Hiking tents i install Grommets on inside fabric the manufacturers leave at the seams of the tent Fabric and that’s how i will hang my “homemade”:Lanterns

I have used a fluffy folded towel to put my frozen can on. The towel will create a type of cradle to hold the can in place while hammering. Also if you do this in summer or a warm house it will catch any and all melted water. I have done this project with 5th graders as the youngest I would go.

Cute idea. I've seen people using bags of beans to hold the can still for the punching/drilling part. The freezing is a great idea to prevent crushing the can or hurting yourself. Two questions: 1) why paint the inside of the punched design, and 2) if I painted the inside of the can, would it still be safe for a lighted tea light candle?

Forgive me for asking, but I don't get the reasoning for the ice/water freezing. For what purpose is that?

Get an empty 5 gallon paint bucket. Place a smaller bucket inside, then fill the space between the buckets with water. Place the bucket outside in freezing weather. After the water has frozen, gently place the paint bucket upside down and jiggle until the ice "bucket" releases. A votive candle or regular candle can be set at the bottom of the ice bucket. These ice buckets placed alongside a sidewalk or driveway glow beautifully at night!

You should drill holes (little ones) so if water gets in there it has a exit point. Cool idea..

Why do you need to freeze the cans?

If your cans are hanging outside where they may be exposed to rain, put a couple holes in the bottom for drainage.

To help keep it steady while making holes(for accident prone people like myself that literally hit my thumb like Homer Simpson at least half the time) roll up two opposite ends of towel evenly, then turn over (so the towel doesn't unroll) put the can on top, shouldn't roll or move as easily. Or use a shoe. I have yet to try either of these, they are just theories I'll try and remember if I ever need them
