Thank you for making this CO simple as it is very lovely. I do like its decorative detail. It is really important to show how counting rows - as you have so that our fabric is understood why the measurment may be off down the road. The C.O. wouldn't typically be taken into consideration. You show here how important that can be especially when measuring for a garment. Much appreciated.

This is the cast-on my mum taught me (many, many years ago) - thank you for finally giving it a name! She was a lever (aka Irish cottage style) knitter, and so am I (obviously). We hold the working yarn in our right hand, with a long straight needle firmly stuck under the right arm. So we do this cast-on with the tail through the fingers and around the thumb of the left hand, and sling the working yarn over the needle with the right hand. I also do the first cast-on stitch in that way - no slipknots ever. Your method works great for circular needles and short dpn's though (which I cannot stuck under my arm) - I shall definitely try it out!

Thank you for the video. I love your teaching style! I am wondering, why do you put the slip knot on top of the needle? Thanks.
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 2 жыл бұрын
Usually, when using just one color, I don't use a slip knot at all. Here is a video showing that technque - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9Fkea1p3bq7lYU.html For teaching purposes, I have used two colors of yarn for the cast on. That is why there is a knot. It is not a slip knot though, it is just a knot to connect the two colors of yarn into one strand.

So, as you say in your comparison, at least in your knitting, the long tail and the twisted german cast on came out about the same amount of stretchiness as the german twisted. I am assuming this may be in part because you take care to block your stitches so they have a uniform spacing and you don't tighten excessively as you demonstrated not to do. IF this is true, do you still recommend doing the german long tail for say ribbed hats, or top-down socks as many others suggest for added stretchiness? Thank you for this very helpful video. I like that you give warnings what not to do!

Unfortunately this is not everything I need to know about the German twisted cast on. I need to know how to do the purl stitch in it. I have done this several times before but I can't seem to work it out now and I can't find any videos online that are helping me. If you've made one that includes the purl so that the German twisted cast on is in rib, please let me know.
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 4 жыл бұрын
This is a great comment. In German Twisted Cast On, both sides look very similar, unlike the standard long tail cast on which has two very different sids. So working in pattern is not as noticeable for the German Twisted CO. Try it on a swatch. You would just mirror the motions.

@semprelegato10
@semprelegato10 5 жыл бұрын
How would you work this cast on for ribbing? I've played with this trying to simulate k1p1 in the standard longtail cast on and the results look ok but wondering if there is a "right" way. Also played with various ways of using more than one color. I did look thru your tutorials but could not find a tutorial addressing this question. I've been on a "mission" recently trying out all the cast ons and cast offs I can find, and keeping the swatches so I can just select the one I want for a particular project. I wouldn't call myself a designer, but I've been knitting for over 60 years and have happily adapted a few patterns that fit me physically and aesthetically and just try different techiques on the old trusty patterns which are now memorized. P.S. i despised seaming until I found your videos within the last year. I can seam or graft like a champion now thanks to you
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 5 жыл бұрын
You can use this cast on for ribbing by mirroring what you are doing. For example if you have k2p2 ribbing, cast on 2 in the regular fashion, then cast on 2 purlwise, etc. You will have to examine what you are doing for the k cast on and how you are using the thumb strand. Then replicate that in a mirrored fashion on the finger strand for the purls. I do have videos on doing this for Long Tail Cast on, but not for this cast on.. Hope this helps. Happy knitting.

@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 6 жыл бұрын
If you used this cast on for an in the round project, the right side of the cast on would be on the right side of the work, same as using a standard long tail cast on. I use it quite a bit for socks, starting ribbing, sweaters bottoms, cuffs, etc. Anywhere that you would use a standard long tail cast on you can also use this cast on. Thank you and happy knitting.
