A video knitting lesson showing you how to cast on using the Old Norwegian method. This technique is great if you want a stretchier edge than you get with other cast-on methods.
If you would like to read more about this technique, please visit my website:

Thanks for watching!

This helped me so much, thank you! I’ve literally gone through 4 other Norwegian/German cast on videos and not gotten it (even a slow-mo one) but yours was perfect! What really helped I think is not only you explained every step, but you also indicated where we were going, then went back into the position before, then did it. This was an awesome teaching video!

Old video but I have to comment, one of the best technique teaching methods I've seen! With loopy cast-on and knotting techniques it always look a bit like nonsense, so it takes a good camera focus, clean movements and very clear explanation on them as to not discourage people new to it. Just following this for a few stitches will help your brain make sense of it and you eventually develop a rhythm for the steps!

Thank you for your video! Clear, short, and sweet. I prefer using a slip knot for the first stitch with this CO like you show. Other videos use a twisted loop. The problem is that the loop isn't a true stitch and it looks really weird at the end of the first row. 😜

I’m new to knitting so pardon the silly question but that initial slip stitch on the needle, does it count as your 1st stitch once you start knitting? I ask because you referred to the second as the “first cast on stitch” so it made me wonder if some of my stitch count issues have been caused by including the initial sip stitch…

You can do any stitch for row one after the cast on row. Just take your second needle and start knitting/purling with the yarn now running between the stitches and the ball of yarn :) I have videos on how to knit/purl if you're stuck.

Hi! It's difficult to know without seeing you try it, but it sounds like you are accidentally taking the needle under and/or over too many strands of yarn. Maybe slow down the speed of the video and make sure you're not catching any extra yarn strands on your needle. Sorry I can't be of more help. Thanks for watching :)
