Tillering tree, tillering stick, tillering rack, tillering board, You get the point? There are many different names for these two different tools. In this video, I talk about the importance of these tools in order to make bows bend evenly. We also cover how to make a tillering stick/board, and a tillering tree/rack.

I made bows as a kid. Bow season for deer is so long where I live that I thought I would get a bow. (September through February). Found your channel because I was sifting through information overload. I love your energy. I can tell you put a lot of effort into videos and editing. Going through your past videos now. New sub. You encouraged me to make my own instead of buying one. I have started building a board bow out of walnut. I might build a second one from ash. I am borrowing a $1500 crossbow for now. It is fancy, cool, powerful and Heavy. I think I will build a tree and everything. Thanks for giving me a way to learn from you.

Sailors use "cam cleats" to hold lines (rope) coming from blocks. If you hold the line up higher coming from the block it won't engage the cleat. Pull lower coming out of the block line will lock in the cleat. Will hold right where you want for draw length. Lift the line up and line comes out of the cleat to release tension. Quick and easy. Love your channel, great job.

Kramer, I've been teaching karate for over 25 yrs. and rarely do I see humility in our art! Your humility and care for your art is what made me want to make my first bow. I just wanted to say Thank You! Additionally, I wanted to find out why you made a linear notch when the bow sits horizontally between the spacers?

Great tiller tree man. You're one point about using it and standing back without being able to mark the "bad spots " while tiller tree. Unlike tiller strick. One thing I did for my tiller tree on the wall. Was I bought a big piece of graph paper and placed it behind my tree. So when tillering you can use the line of the graph paper to check tiller from you're standing point. It seams to help. Or it did for I anyways. 🏹🎯😎

Great vid! I highly recommend adding a Sailing rope c-cleat, maybe to the floor, maybe on a table opposite ( depends on what you feel comfortable with), to lock the rope on the wall mounted tree. Easy lock, easy release. Keep up the good work.

Hey great video, it really helped and I think I’m going to go with the tillering tree. Question though, how do you feel about felt in the bow rest? Would it matter that much? I would imagine the felt would give a little and then give a misreading however minimum and not sure about how much wood on wood contact would hurt the bow if at all. Hope that’s not confusing.

I would try using something thicker than that hook on the tillering tree so theres not so much pressure on that one spot of the bow string or does it not matter that much?? I would not know i have not tried making my first bow yet.

Wallace V that was my question too, the “stick” method is straight forward enough to mark the bow but how to mark using the board/wall mount method escapes me. Visual memory? What/where do I look? I’ll probably use the stick for my first one and see how it goes but it makes sense that it stresses the bow more and is not as easy when exercising it as the wall mount.
@adtymryd6295
@adtymryd6295 4 жыл бұрын
@@dkhallal you'll need some locking mechanism to hold the bow at certain draw. How you do it is up to you tho cz it depends on your working space, solutions and whatnot He did show it but it was brief, it's a quick and easy method using a loop and a nail as a hook

My tillering tree is literally a tree with a broken limb at eye level, prolly should just make 1 of these. What do you mean by exercising your limbs tho, never heard of that and what purpose does it serve?

I just made my first bow from poplar board following your video. Just got the string on it, and on first draw, it snapped! It was only 60 inches and had only 4 layers of fibreglass tape and type 2 wood glue. Shame, but I learned a lot. I think one of the observations is that the compression side of the bow (belly) seems to be what exaggerates the forces the tension side (back), so it's better to thin the limbs and have a lower poundage bow than get greedy! I'm guessing the max thickness should be about 5/16" or 10 mm, or in any case much less than 1/2". I also think more layers is better (lamination looks like a good idea).

I made the poplar bow a few weeks ago. It snapped as well. I made another using red oak and seven strips of tape. Came out to be 35lbs , 28in draw. It's held up passed about 300 shots. I'm making another this week. Going to try for 40lbs draw.

I'm also building my own tillering tree based on this design and made some improvements to fit my needs Keep doing what you're doing, also be careful on several things like that spilled finish for the tillering stick 😂 I guess it's just me nitpicking your mistakes but at the same time, learning to be careful when I'm working. Cheers bro!

Your at 625 this morning my friend, great job. Thank you for taking the time to share this with us. Your package was taken to the post office yesterday, so look for it showing up at your place next week would be my best guess. I love both of these and as you well know, I need to build both, so its on my list and I will use your video as a reference when I start mine. Thanks again my friend and have a blessed weekend. PS, your new website looks sweet. I have checked it out and will be ordering a tillering string soon. Just waiting on a couple of small deals to pan out first. :) Dale

Hey. You seem to know a lot about bow making. What kind of glue wood you recommend for wood that bends? I had a decorative pattern on the handle of my Alibow bow peeled off. The bow is fine, but I want to glue that pattern back on. It bends with the handle so the glue should be something strong. But I know shit about types of glue 😁 If you can recommend something I'd really appreciate it.

Maybe I missed it in the video, but what was the purpose of having the 2” notch cut into the top of the 2x6? It seems to serve no purpose, but I’m trying to get into making my own bow, so genuinely curious.
@adtymryd6295
@adtymryd6295 4 жыл бұрын
When you put the bow on the tree *without* the notch, it tends to move around because it's just flat surface despite the plywood there to fit the handle But WITH the notch, the bow will stay centered on the tree better because the handle (belly) part will sort of 'get in' to that said notch. It doesn't necessarily need to be 2", it depends on the handle size and design Hope this is helpful!

That’s a great saw if your going to different jobs or outdoors etc, but for a shop, you should have a real saw, that way you don’t put wear on your batteries , motor, etc. I seen cheap used chop saws that run forever. I left an old small one outside for a few years and it still worked no problem. That way you don’t have to wait for batteries. I seen a lot of youtubers use tools like grinders and saws that their battery runs out I’m like bro you have a corded grinder right there smh.
