Hey Kramer, great videos, great instruction, great camera work. The bowyers knot is also called the timber hitch.
@TheMaxqb
@TheMaxqb 2 жыл бұрын
The knot (7:37) is a "bowyer's knot". It has the identical form as a "timber hitch" (ABOK 195) but if you follow Ashley's naming scheme they're different knots since they have different uses. Edit: The knots he mentions for bows/archery are loops/splices for the operation of the bow and there no mentions for of knots for tillering.

You might try Watco Danish Oil finish … wipe it on … let it stand for a while … wipe off the excess. Same process if you need to re-finish the bow. This was the only finish we used when I was working in the cabinet shop.

Beautiful bow, great video! I love watching you work. I was really anticipating the finish of this bow to see how the arrows would fly compared to the thicker bamboo backing build you did previously. I really liked the flat flight of the arrows making it really accurate from a distance. Any chance you could give a video on the different flight characteristics from your various builds? This summer I am going to duplicate your thick bamboo backed ipe bow. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep making videos!

@heartfang21
@heartfang21 3 жыл бұрын
sorry for being 6 months late with this as you likely have it by now. ill drop this in case anyone watches the vid and has your questions in the future. With the description he gives here, you can make one as he gives all the relevant information. Each block shape is to cause a bend in the desired direction and to allow for clamping (hence plywood and not solid blocks) and for specific measurements, he said he just does what he likes for the curve he wants. plywood, to make it nice (and so long as you intend to use it more than once, since finishing a 1-use item is a waste of time) requires countersunk holes drilled for screws (so the heads are below the wood's surface without damaging it) and maybe router or sand the edges to allow for a cleaner look, fewer splinters, and more protection for the bow. for better longevity/stability, glue before screwing - but in theory it could be easier to store if you don't, and you could just add an extra screw/ notching between the pieces so they fit together well. preferably taking into account the forces involved. .....which is easier than it sounds, actually. for the base board, you want something flat and of desired length. that's about it. engineered products (plywood, laminate, etc) will tend to be straighter over longer periods of time (avoid OSB, and any boards made involving compressed particulate matter. any moisture and they disintegrate/warp.) you could also in theory just toss some paint or sealant on a natural board. theyll do just fine on their own if you can get a straight one and keep it dry/ in a straight position during storage, but im thinking for longevity and rough use. accidents happen, and it will be going into an oven over and over. how he assembles the bow and clamps it is the most valuable teaching information, as everything about the bow is simply because he wants it that way/ he's found it to work best for him. for the heat box and curing, you can find that info on whatever adhesive you use - the heat box looks to be a basic box with some of that insulating packing material. but assuming it int too hot, you could use styrofoam or whatever you can find space for to hit or withstand temps involved.

Dude . . . Like everyone else, I absolutely love your channel especially how you explain exactly what you're doing as you're doing it and in a very succinct way. Most Bowyer KZfaq channels either have way too long winded of explanations and make it confusing, or they say about 10 words in the whole video. Oh and just in case you guys were wondering this dude always emails you back answers all your questions and does so in a very timely fashion, the guys a real class act . . . But I have to comment on it, every song in all of your videos his hipster to the maximum. Can we get some punk or metal and one of your videos? Just once? You could make a Scythian style bow while playing the band Scythikon, or make him Mongolian style bow while listening to the Mongolian metal band The Hu. They even inculcate Mongolian throat singing into metal . . . Otherwise I'm pretty sure one of the guys from the Canadian punk band Propaghandhi practices archery

Another suggestion... @18:52 perhaps either center your tillorying tree between the horizontal brick lines of the wall or alternatively, draw evenly spaced horizontal lines on the wall... giving you better ability to see the curve of each limb.

Kramer Thanks for all your entertaining and informative videos. I am turning 80 in June and have five bow that are now to heavy a draw weight for me. I am selling my left handed Ben Graham 'Kingfisher' of 54lb @ 27" deflex/reflex Red Elm/Bamboo longbow.. Trying to get up to pulling my 47lb Dan Quillon recurve. Maybe ??? I made an Oak 50lb flat bow and made the mistake after letting the stave dry in AC , and then working it in my Florida high humidity, no AC shop . Tillering and then test shooting before sealing, and let it sit in the shop for a week. Of course it went to a string follow set. I am thinking I can shave this bow down to 35-38 lbs. , but any idea how to get rid of the string follow at the same time ??
