Rules and governing restrictions are used every day in countless ways to refine that which is crude and unmeasured into something refined and more capable.
We recognize this principle in countless ways in our daily lives except for one critical area: which is sex. We say, in this instance, we don’t need any thing that governs our behaviour except the absolute minimum. So, as long as you can find another willing adult, have at ‘er.
We don’t say things like, I want to rule sex rather than be ruled by it the way we do with everything else. But, our ancestors recognized that sex is a good thing which can, like everything else, be refined through governing restrictions in order to maximize its potential good.
So they said, it should be enjoyed in a certain way which recognizes its purpose, which is not pleasure by the way just like the purpose of eating is not pleasure, and which places reasonable restrictions on it so that we don’t let it rule us.
And this is what marriage has always been. It’s been a critical measure that places reasonable restrictions on sex and anticipates the reasonable consequences of sex, which is that it strengthens your emotional bond with another person and procreation.
Simultaneously, our ancestors recognized that marriage and family are essential to raising functional and well-adjusted citizens who can contribute and not be a burden to everyone else.
But over the past 100 years, we’ve been tinkering with this. We looked at our growing prosperity and arrogantly assumed that it was inevitable. That progress, like evolution happens naturally as long as we don’t interfere.
And since it does, we might as well enjoy ourselves and since sex is enjoyable, why place burdensome restrictions on it? And ever since then, we’ve seen catastrophic effects on marriage and the family and society.
We’ve seen a dramatic increase in sexually transmitted diseases which have costed millions of lives and an incalculable amount of health care expenses. We’ve seen divorce become as common as marriage. And the proliferation of several other effects that I’ll get to.
And ever since then, we’ve been doubling down on our little experiment trying to respond to the unintended consequences but with no appreciation for what’s causing them.
And a lot of this can be traced back to the advent and promotion of artificial contraception which promised us consequence free sex. But the consequences for refusing to govern ourselves isn’t necessarily a bad thing because as we’ve seen in so many other examples, governing ourselves is how we refused to be ruled by something or someone external.
Again, we govern our minds with education in order to refine our thoughts into knowledge. We govern our abilities with training in order to refine them into skills. We govern our bodies with nutrition and exercise in order to maximize their potential and the alternative negative consequences are what help inspire those good decisions.
When it comes to sex, we thought we had fixed that with contraception. But, no contraception works 100% of the time under the best circumstances and casual sex is rarely undertaken under the best circumstances.
Rates of effectiveness vary between 90% and 98% depending on the method and how strictly we use it. Which means that for every 100 cases of casual sex, there are a considerable number illegal aliens sneaking across the border. And if you multiply that by the number of casual sexual encounters, that’s a LOT of unintended pregnancies. Which means, we need abortion as a safety net because we were promised consequence free sex… which was and is a lie.

The family is to society what a cell is to an organism or what a brick is to a wall. When the family breaks down, society breaks down. CCC 2207 The family is the original cell of social life. It is the natural society in which husband and wife are called to give themselves in love and in the gift of life. Authority, stability, and a life of relationships within the family constitute the foundations for freedom, security, and fraternity within society. The family is the community in which, from childhood, one can learn moral values, begin to honor God, and make good use of freedom. Family life is an initiation into life in society.

I feel the exact same way, I'm 19, and people my age have their heads screwed on backwards or something. And it's sadly because of terrible experiences with their families. By sharing this I will get hate because these people will say that it is a lack of "compassion" towards those who "weren't so lucky" and call me a hypocrite. But what we as Catholic Christians want to say with this video is that we should work to *stop* playing the victim card if we had a rough upbringing and start working to _create_ and _found_ new fruitful and healthy families full of *love* to benefit humanity towards the future.

It reminds me of what I read in Marcus Aurelius' Meditations: "What is not harmful to the city does not harm the citizen either. Whenever you imagine you have been harmed, apply this criterion: if the city is not harmed by this, then I have not been harmed either. If on the other hand harm is done to the city, you should not be angry, but demonstrate to the doer of this harm what he has failed to see himself." Our cities are hotbeds of original sin and concupiscence. We are teaching our children to engage in things that do not belong to them. Something I've always wanted to protect is the innocence of young children, and I started out on this path not watching tv that is different from my siblings by an implicit learning from my parents if not explicit. They were also big on free will and freely choosing to do good.

I watched a video concerning this topic from Church Militant yesterday. The host attributes where we are today to the decision by the Anglican Church to allow contraceptives for married couples in 1920. Once the door was opened a crack, there was no going back and that door has long ago been removed to the detriment of society with all it's consequences.

Thank you for this - Self-control and Self-discipline are key in our development, and we can learn it best by watching members of our family exercising it. But mention "control" to some and some will assume "robot masters" taking over, not self-control and restraint as a means to improve ourselves. I do think that divorce (because of the hardness of heart and our propensity for cruelty and abuse) as well as abortion (conducted with the same gravity as amputating a hand or an ear or removing eye) have roles in life, but not the free-wheeling and destructive roles they seem to have assumed today.

Just meet this channel by jumping from other videos and as most of the times you know something new, I was interested in listening, so I saw a couple of videos. And I got a few points to share, I think myself that it all comes to responsibility and common sense, pleasure is natural as enjoying life is natural. But, agree, we always need to be careful with our decisions, again: responsibility. Pleasure could not be a purpose but it's part of the process, if not why is it even there?. This is not restricted to a religious point of view, but I understand the purpose of the video, I just wanna say, in my personal way of thinking, that nobody asked for, we should be capable to enjoy ourselves with caution and thinking on the consequences. Stoics says that pleasure should be controlled and dosed in order to be more enjoyable and I add, restrictions only brings frustration and anguish to do that thing. I was able to see the thumbnail about traditional family, would like to know the channel's take on that.

Very true, but thel root of our true calling is to serve God first, who we've been called to serve first! He governs the heart and decisions we make, if we will but listen, study His word and apply His laws in our hearts and likewise lives! Because God desires us to Lord over all, and He is Anyway, for the good one does or the consequences that come for the bad! 2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Better to call on the mercy of the Lord, then lead a life of pride, sin and excess, which leads death! For the only life that really matters, that will endure, is the Abundant life Christ gives

Still, multiplying that by the number of people participating, you get a lot of unwanted pregnancies per year. My wife and I did a lot of research on this a few years ago.

The major criticism I have is the way he portraits sex ed. In public school in the midwest we are barely told the basics about anatomy or reproduction. We understood condoms existed but nothing else. Girls werent explained anything about their anatomy or the ovulation cycle except for their periods. There must be better sexual education so young people know their bodies and understanding libido and sex. I cannot tell you how many peers of mine learned about sex through porn because their parents never told them and the school system didnt actually explain anything.

I think this was supposed to be a conclusion based on people having more casual sexual interactions due to the safety net of contraception. @@Hawaiian_Pizza_Enjoyer - If he did, he has made that conclusion in error. I am not necessarily saying it is not true. What I am saying, however, is that his analysis is not sufficient to properly reach that conclusion. Let's say the availability of contraception does lead to a higher rate of casual sexual activity. In some cases, this may lead to more unplanned pregnancies, which may lead to more abortions. Okay, that's all fine. But then we also need to account for the fact that the availability of contraception, in some cases, also leads to less unplanned pregnancies for some people who are making proper use of it. I don't think any reasonable person would deny this effect. What needs to be done - to prove the point - is an aggregation of both effects. They must then be compared to each other. This conclusion cannot be reached by pretty words and grandiose rhetoric. It can only be reached by rigorous economic analysis.

Contraception is the symbol of our childish modern ideas, we want pleasure without consequences. And believe me you don't do any good by thinking like that. We litteraly use an object to block nature and allow us to take what can bring personal pleasure and reject life. Its like if you invented something to prevent the consequences of eating so that you could eat non stop without facing any consequence for your actions. More than that, contraceptives can make men consider women objects. Its not a surprise christianism helped so much women when it developped, without sexual moral and christian marriage, men can be less respectuous towqrds women. I don’t think contraception is inherently wrong. If a loving husband and wife aren’t quite ready for children, I support their right to use birth control, condoms, etc. to *delay* (not to entirely omit) pregnancy. But of course, if the contraception doesn’t work, they should still be open to having children. I’m single, but if I had a wife, I might want to wait a year or so after marrying to have a child, just to build our relationship and intimacy. But of course, if we did have a child early/unexpectedly, I would still rejoice in that, and I hope she would as well. I hope that makes sense.

I think I disagree with the "to delay (not entirely omit)" because I think the purpose is to take away your ability to procreate temporarily in that moment while still being able to have sex. So, while it is like a temporary "sterilization", you are not being open to children while having sex because you intended to not have children by using a contraceptive. You use a contraceptive because you want it to work and by wanting to it to fulfill its purpose you are not intending to fulfill the purpose of sex. I hope this makes sense because I feel like I'm rambling. I don't usually comment, but what you said was interesting to me. Thanks

If you are a Catholic, then you profess that marriage has two purposes. 1. Procreation of Gods chosen people 2. Leading one another to heaven. If you are not ready for children, then you are not ready for marriage. Wedding each other before you are "ready" for children, defeats the purpose of the marriage.

From the religious point of view.... Marrying before you are willing to have children, would be like getting baptized or confirmed without believing in God. 1. Do not confound "rules" with "skill", while there may be rules to the road, swimming is more a matter of developing a skill. 2. Do not confound "sex" with "reproduction", or "marraige" with "reproduction"; sex has always been ritualized, whether or not through marraige, any relationship goes through steps of negotiation and valuation. A final consequence may be reproductive, but not necessarily. 3. Do not confound "Contraceptives" meaning "consequence free sex", it refers to an ability to manage biological reproduction, such as we might manage other biological conditions such as sicknesses or growth. 4. Do not confound "abortion" as "a safety net for extramarital sex", it is a way to manage biological reproduction, particulary in cases of sexual abuse. 5. Do not confound sexual liberation with "allowing our appetites to rule"; sexual liberation is a way of finding true harmony with a mate who is genuinely supportive and compatible free from the standards of institutions such as "the conservative church" that historically restricted and imposed sexual and marital relationships upon people who needed something else, leading to continued abuse and oppression, particularly in the case of women who were essentially considered property until the last few centuries. 6. Do not confound "divorced" with "dysfuntion"; not all divorced families are dysfunctional, and at times abuse within the relationship may be more dysfuntional than a separation. 7. Your conclusion that policies that support the family begs the question because it assumes that a dysfuntional family is cause of the ills of society, but doesn't consider, nor disprove, any other cause that may lead the the problems that exist within society. So it doesn't hold up logically, althought you make it sound as if it does.

@Lucas Hoops well said. But do not confound slick words with enlightenment. Marriage means learning to love your partner, unconditionally. Being "supportive and compatible" is a natural consequence of true sacrificial love and not the other way around. Learning to love someone unconditionally is a skill that cannot be mastered without rules! For example, defending a country is a skill that a soldier learns by starting to follow certain rules diligently. The rules that the "conservative church" has in place is to encourage and nurture unconditional love and true sacrifice in a relationship and not just to find a mate who is supportive and compatible. Just look at the divorce rates these days and it will tell you how successful the "sexual revolution" has been in helping people find "supportive and compatible" mates! God bless and if you have a Bible please read 1 Corinthians 3:19. God bless.

@@dangerousmango88 the Catholic church understands the plight of people with same-sex attraction, empathizes with them and loves them. But loving someone doesn't mean that you accept their actions which could be detrimental to their peace and well being. There are many instances where Jesus asks not to sin again in the Bible. This means I love you but please don't continue with that behavior. We all have our challenges. But it is up to us to choose to act on it. There are many cases of people with same sex attractions in the Catholic Church who by the grace of God choose not to act on it. I can be attracted to other women or be tempted to watch porn online. But it becomes a sin when I act on it. Similarly having same sex attraction is not a sin. But acting on those impulses is a disorderly behavior. I have been married for 16 years now. Once I knew Christ and learned to love my wife unconditionally it has been a blessing. Base your identify on God please and not on your sexual or any other orientations. That's what the world wants. It never ends well. Acknowledge and Seek God's grace. That's when help comes from above. God bless.

Jesus spoke the Truth to Peter and his disciples and the church was built. Truth is not something that each person decides for himself. No one said that everyone has to be married. Hundreds of years ago women were terrified of childbirth. The past is not some rosey place to go bask in your moral superiority. When exactly was this golden age of Leave it to Beaver marriages? Do tell. Humanity can do better. And you'll find once you stop worrying about what goes on in other people's bedrooms, you'll be a lot happier and compassionate.
