Akwafina had to drop out of the production of filming, where she was to play Evelyn’s daughter, because of scheduling conflicts with this film & her role in SHANG CHI….I’m actually happy that happened, because Stephanie Hsu playing Joy was a breath of fresh air. I feel Akwafina would have been too much of a visual comic relief disaster as, Stephanie’s sweetness & innocence made the role much more likable in this instant.

I absolutely adore that despite not knowing what Jobu wants, he actually answers it in his line. "In every universe she's looking for you." She wants her mom.

Pls tell me I’m not the only person who cried at the end when Eric was talking about his mom, that’s such a loving story and it really shows why Eric has poured so much passion into these kinds of videos for all the years we’ve loved them.

It wasn’t addressed in the breakdown, but as someone with a severe mental illness who has contemplated suicide, I feel like that was a big component of the mother-daughter relationship. The daughter seemed to be dark, spiraling, drowning. Looking to her mother for help, for love, for acceptance, for anything that could bring her back from the brink. When I watched this movie, as a parent I sobbed because that’s what my interpretation was. A child desperately reaching out to her parent for help.

One small detail that I loved was the fact that the googly eyes were a reverse coloration of the bagel. They are representing finding the good in "nothing matters" vs finding the bad. When Evelyn puts one on her forehead, its not only a nod to opening ones third eye and seeing the truth, it is also a reversal of the black circle Jobu's followers wore on their foreheads.

This analysis was awesome. Loved the recurring examples of the "employee first, family second" mindset from Evelyn!

This movie is amazing. My wife and her family are immigrants from Macedonia and my inlaws run a nice little grocery store in Rochester, NY - and this movie really helped me to understand them as well as my wife's ability to remain perpetually positive throughout any situation we've ever faced. I was the Evelyn and she is my Waymond. And this movie just flipped so many things for me, it hit so close to home - like eerily close. I love it so much. The Daniels, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, everybody involved with this film deserves all the awards.

Other movies have made me laugh harder, others have made me cried more, but never have I done so much of both in the span of a single film. This analysis made me appreciate it even more.

Ugh, this is probably my favorite movie of the last few years. Voss breaking it down how it moved him as well was just magic. Thank you for this. Just like the movie it made me laugh & cry. Just brilliant.

Am I the only one who cried when Waymond was giving his whole speech at the end of the film. I don’t what it was but it was so emotional for me, I absolutely loved his character and when he was giving his speech and Evelyn was being all powerful and evil, I just felt bad for Waymond.

"There are no bad movies, just interesting ones. Somewhere out there in the multiverse, someone appreciated it, and I don't wanna take that away from them" Thank you, honestly this is my sentiment with films and shows and stuff like that these days. I come out of movie theatres and already hear people talking shit about the film and I'm just like.. "Dude! Do you have to jump right into nitpicking every single aspect of this film? Do you gotta be so miserable?" It feels like im the only person in the world who can watch a film that has flaws and still enjoy it. like Quantumania, its flawed, its not perfect, i wish they did stuff differently but i STILL LOVE IT yet there has been so much negativity around it, and even though its faceless or sometimes even facefull people on the internet who wont ever meet me, it's still another human almost taking away and putting down something I enjoy. I know a lot of other people also like Quantumania so im not gonna say im the only one, but still, I see so much negativity about stuff about media these days and I'm just like.. Can't we appreciate art for art? Why do we have to judge it through a lens of predetermined structures? Why limit creativity? That's why I appreciate your content so much, I feel like you understand and see media and art the same way I do. Even if you didn't enjoy a movie or book or show.. real people were behind it, people put their heart and soul into the art. Art is Art, whether you like said Art or not, I think there should be some level of.. not respect but more so appreciation. Even a bad film can be enjoyed

I've seen this movie a few times and each time it makes me sob uncontrollably. But you've put it in an even deeper perspective for me, especially when you showed the bagel next to that opening shot. How powerful! And thank you for sharing about your mom, it truly is the power of movies ❤️

I struggled a little explaining why this movie is just one of the best things I've ever watched, I just couldn't find the words on why it was so deep, so beautiful, and so meaningful to me, I never find the words, but Erik did it masterly, and it shows how much he authentically loved it. He doesn't only pointed out the little details that make a movie not great, but almost perfect, but he also talks on the deeper meanings and relations to real life, HIS real life. Amazing, real 11/10.

Discovering this channel 6 years ago was legitimately the best thing that happened to me on KZfaq. That is a philosophy that I came to realize in my own life within the last few years. During my teen years I was very similar to Joy and for a time in my late 20's I was similar to Evelyn. Thank you for doing these…at first, with our ever depleting attention spans, I seemed to shy away from the longer videos, but DEFINITELY can say, this was my favorite of ALL (yes, I’ve seen them ALL so far). Enough to not only bring a reminder’s tear to my eye and encouraged me to rewatch EEAAO again tonight…this is random, but when you said for us to recommend other movies to breakdown I gave it some thought…and the only movie that came to mind for all of its cinematic, subtle notions and overall BRILLIANCE, is Confessions of a Dangerous Mind with Sam Rockwell and George Clooney (along with a lot of other HUGE A list names in random underscored cameos), who made his directorial debut directing this film. If you haven’t seen it, you will thank me after watching, especially if you Google the story behind it’s “true story”. Sorry for the lengthy message but I hope this gets to you. Either way, thank you for all that you do and how you find the good, and “interesting” parts of ALL movies you see and breakdown. Great video! I've been waiting for this one, because I wasn't as blown away by this movie as everyone else the first time I watched it. I can't wait to watch it again through the lens of this video! Also, I love you whole philosophy on movies! It's one of my favorite things about your New Rockstars videos as well. I think it's great that you tend to focus on what you appreciate about the movies, rather than being overly critical like so many others. I would love to see you do a deep dive into the Matrix (or the original trilogy). I know you did a video about it on New Rockstars, and you said that that was the movie that got you into diving so deeply into movies in the first place. It was the same for me. Several years ago (Oct 2019) I went on a cruise with my wife and a bunch of folks we knew. I took 400 googly eyes with me and shared them all over the ship. It irritated the hell out of my wife, but brought so much joy to so many folks. I followed that up with doing the same thing everywhere we went (bars, music festivals, friends houses, etc.). When the trailer for this first came out, I had so many folks pointing it out to me. I absolutely loved this movie (and not just for the googlies ;) ). Thanks for the great review.

Hey Eric ! Thanks for creating this new channel and deep diving for us. As if you had enough sleep already ^^ (but seriously, take care of you, man ! We love you, so don't forget to take care of yourself). And thanks a lot for covering what was arguably the best movie of last year (which is saying a lot, in a year that gave us an insane list of insane movies like The Batman, The Northman, Turning Red, Top Gun Maverick, Nope, The Menu, Avatar 2, and Puss in Boots 2 the Last Wish !). It's extremely rare for me to rewatch a movie even twice in a row... and I went to watch EEAAO in theaters 6 times ! The first one solo (and got blown away !), the second one solo as well (just to confirm my first viewing wasn't a dream), then each following time, showing it to different friends and family each time. And even long after its theatrical run was over, I still watched it twice again after moving back to Taiwan, one to show it to my best friend on the island, and finally to my mom, who didn't quite got it but still liked it. This movie is my everything bagel (it sucked me in !) So when you announced that the first Deep Dive video would be of this movie, I very much looked forward to it, and it didn't disappoint ! That was a fantastic breakdown ! Also, as a chinese descendant myself, I just wanted to point out a little tidbit that mostly only chinese people might have seen : the everything bagel is black, with a white hole in it. The googly eyes are white circles with a black dot in it. These are actually directly symbolizing the duality between the yin and the yang ! The bagel being Yin (darkness, water, cold, death, feminine essence...) And it is the symbol of Jobu Tupaki. The Yang energy is the polar opposite, light, warmth, fire, life, male essence...) and it is the symbol of Waymond. They are basically Evelyn's little devil and angel on her shoulders, in a constant tug of war to get her towards their viewpoint of life, and in the end, Evelyn chooses a third path : her own, right in the middle (you can see her at the begining of chapter 2 Everywhere hesitate and trying to decide where to put her circled receipt, and end up fracturing the screen by choosing both left and right, and at the begining of Chapter 3 All At Once, she just calmly put it in the middle of the frame) ! By choosing the center, she's basically embracing the nihilism of Jobu, but also combining it with the kindness of Waymond, thus combining both Yin AND yang, becoming a full circle of Taiji herself, therefore reaching cosmic balance, becoming the most powerful being in the multiverse (and possibly in the history of filmmaking !) This movie is just insane ! The Daniels apparently just won the best director award at the Directors ceremony, besting even Steven Spielberg for the Fabelmans, and I can't wait to see if they're gonna snatch the Best director and/or Best picture Oscar as well. Nobody has ever done a movie quite like this one before in the history of cinema, and I'm really rooting for them to get the recognition they deserve !

Super bravo on this deep dive! Wow, so much work and brilliant insights! I am so mad you brought up a few details I thought only I had seen, so I can't no longer claim them as my own findings. I have to point out, however that in the philosophical approach you missed a little something: it felt like you focused the core of the meaning only on the bagel, the nihilistic part, the "nothing matters" represented by Jobu, the empty circle. But there is a literal yin-yang, with the googly eye, the filled circle, where all choices matter and create new life paths, the existentialist counterpart, which makes all this chaos fall into place.
