This is actually Ke Huy Quan's return to acting after quitting because Hollywood just wasn't taking many Asian actors, and watching Crazy Ritch Asians made him want to return to acting. It's crazy that he got this role only a couple of weeks after coming back to acting

Someone’s probably mentioned this already, but her first alternate-life vision, the one where she becomes a martial-arts film star, is essentially Michelle Yeoh’s actual life, and some of the clips are actually her in her younger days.

I really loved the take on nihilism where it’s literally like, if nothing matters in the grand scheme of things, then why not just try to enjoy yourself and cherish the moments you have with your loved ones instead of being a typical nihilist, who just doesn’t care about anyone or anything because “nothing matters” this movie hit me hard

I always tear up with the husband scene. The part when he says somehow he felt everything was his fault and the essence of him was that kindness isn't a weakness. Kind, silliness brings people together. The world can be a harsh and hurtful place, but what heals from those bad times are these silly fun times.

This movie is so beautiful. It correctly acknowledges that nothing matters, but the it shows that that doesn't constrain us to being uncaring, rather it frees us create meaning and love and beauty.

This movie is The Real Multiverse Of Madness.

Fun fact: The actor who played Grandpa Gong Gong (James Hong, who is 93 years old) voiced Po's adoptive father in the KUNG FU PANDA movies and the shaman in TURNING RED. Also, if you are interested in another Michelle Yeoh movie, I highly recommend CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON (2000).

and the scene where the entire family is trying desperately to hold on to Joy (both physically and metaphorically) and keep her from leaving them (possible suicidal tendencies) really hit hard. This was indeed a movie about family and the importance of love.

I went into this movie virtually blind - no idea what to expect. On my first watch so much was going on in it that I don’t think I really got it all, but it absolutely got all of me. Since then I have binge-watched reaction videos to EEAAO on KZfaq because I really want to enjoy people experiencing the wonder, the laughs, the craziness, the beauty, and the emotions for the first time. Even now having been re-watching along with the reactors dozens of times it still makes me cry. I don’t know how they do it. Now I’m glad that some of the reactors I’m subscribed to (Natalie, Summ) are watching it too. Love this movie completely and totally.

I always thought them singing together on the beginning is actually the ending shot, since they talked about doing it all night at the end. So it became like a full circle.

Damn, Natalie cried way less at this than I did. When Rock Evelyn turned around with the googly eyes, I had enough feelings built up at that point that I just broke down into a strange combination of crying and laughing.

I cried probably 4 or 5 times watching this movie the first time. My mum asked my why I was crying over a comedy movie. Afterwards I told her it was one of the best movies I've ever seen. She said it was alright. I don't think she got it.

This is one movie where every 5 minutes I was once again astounded that _THIS_ was an actual scene that was filmed and edited and shown to a packed theater of middle-Americans. In the theater, the Rocks scene was so bright it lit up the whole audience; packed wall to wall and as surprised yet engaged, in good enough lighting to see each other, enjoying a solid 3 minutes of dead silence broken only by the occasional chuckle at the "dialogue." It's the sort of moment that can only be experienced in a packed theater. Happy Tarantino noises intensify.

I haven't watched a movie that made me cry and relate to as much as this one. I relate so bad to everything feeling worthless and nothing is worth it. Im trying to work on that but man this movie just nails how I feel so much. And visually and the ideas this movie has. The rock scene seems silly but its so emotional, Joy's fun outfits and powers and how creative they got with it. Love this film and one of my new fave movies

This is the first movie in YEARS that I remember watching throughout thinking, "Oh my god I think this will crack my top ten films of ALL TIME." I've said this in another reaction video, but the line "In another life, I would've loved to do laundry and taxes with you" is the line of the decade. This is the best movie of the year by a mile.

I ball every time when the daughter and the mother come to a compromise in the parking lot. The way I see the everything bagel.. it's a gateway to depression possibly suicide. Joy needs Evelyn to be on her side, not contradict her. I will cry everytime Evelyn's rock version falls to save her daughter. Drop everything, GO call your mom today!

I love that this movie did such an amazing job of capturing my personal "philosophy" or understanding of the Universe. I've seen it referred to as optimistic nihilism. It's the idea that, on any cosmic or objective level, nothing matters, yet far from being a depressing or oppressive realization, it's a liberation. Because to the Universe, nothing matters, then it is up to us to make meaning. If nothing is written, nothing is set, then it's up to us, individually and as a species. We're the result of countless random and semi-random chains of cause & effect with no guiding hand or purpose, clinging to the surface of a rock hurdling through the vastness of space; barely hairless apes who have only relatively recently appeared on the scene, and yet we are here, trying to understand, trying to make something of ourselves, trying to create beauty, trying to put our mark on eternity. Anyway. I loved the movie. Glad so many people are experiencing it.

That scene with the two rocks with the "I'm joking! That was a joke!" made me laugh so damn hard. Everything about this movie is so unexpected, but still full of heart. Definitely deserves to be nominated for Best Picture.

I'm sure it'll be commented a million times but the reason you haven't seen anything from Ke Huy Quan as an adult is because he didn't act for decades due to the only roles available being for like sidekicks and nerdy characters & he wanted less stereotypical roles. I believe he did behind-the-camera work of some kind though.

One thing I saw about this movie is at the beginning when joy is staring into the dryer you can see the everything bagel faintly. So many details in this movie. It’s so absurd but amazing.

The fact that they managed to make a movie this insanely chaotic land with a powerful emotional impact during the whole third act is just incredible.

I left the theater crying. The ending tapped something in me and I wasn't ready for it. I recommend it to everyone I talk to about movies now.

I walked into this film on premiere day with no expectations. I walked out having watched one of the greatest movies I have ever seen in my whole life. I can't tell you how many times I cried, but I can say with certainty that I called my mother on my way home just to tell her I loved her.

The cinematography in the scenes with her celebrity persona are a homage to the style of Wong Kar-wai, one of Asia's best film directors. Other scenes, especially the one where they become rocks, are very reminiscent of the style of weirdness in the X-Men-based TV series "Legion", which I strongly recommend, and indeed, the showrunners of Legion worked on this movie.

No other movie has ever made me feel the way this movie makes me feel. Cried, laughed, and cried some more. Even on my 10th watch.

It's really interesting to see the variety of reactions possible with this movie. The hotdog fingers universe is a litmus test for something, I just can't put my whole finger on it yet. Personally by the end of the movie I accepted the hotdog universe as 100% justified and not at odds with the movie's message in any way, and not purely weird for the sake of weird. I think for certain people the shot of the mustard and ketchup on the face would take away from the ending superspeed montage leading up to the hug. Sort of brave for the directors to place that in there. Natalie would be an example of a person who perhaps over-noticed it and I think you could argue she wasn't able to receive the full effect of the cacophony dissolving in an instant to the hug. For me it was the moment I experienced the most explosive emotion.

This movie was such a surprise while watching it, and it's definitely one of the highlights of the year so far. I love Cameron's use of the googly eye rock 😊

I remember seeing this in the cinema and everyone was so quiet and glued to the screen in the rock scene. Was surreal but great.

I went to see this movie because I love Michelle Yeoh and I had heard that it was one of the most interesting and well-done movie in years. Then I watched it, cried my eyes out, and thought about it for days afterwards. I went and saw it again (with two people who knew nothing about it) and cried even more the second time. This is, to date, my favorite movie of all time. I have never watched it and not cried.

I've seen a LOT of films so far this year. It's really hard to imagine what can top this. I saw it on the first weekend of it's release with my boyfriend and there were only two other couples in the theater with us. Afterwards, I knew it was something special and hoped word of mouth would see it through. I'm so happy to see others experience this film. I was in a bit of a muddled place when I first saw this, but since seeing this film, I try to follow Waymond and Evelyn's later example and it's definitely allowed more happiness in my life. Great film!

There's so much to love in this movie, and all the cast committed to their roles so deeply. Props to all and a special mention for Jamie Lee Curtis, who did a fantastic job as, "Deirdre Beaubeirdra ", the tax lady.

This is the first movie that I have felt was "Impressively Good" in a long long time. The action and the special effects weren't just window dressing a lame action movie plot. All the acting delivered. The story was amazing.

I saw this movie based on a recommendation from someone. I didn't know anything about it other than it had Michelle Yeoh. I did see a trailer but it doesn't prepare you for anything that happens in the movie. I was so blown away that I picked up a copy on 4K the day it was released. The movie is so good!

I am enjoying watching reactions to this movie because each reactor has pointed out something I missed. Like I didn't pick up on the bagels appearing everywhere, and another reactor pointed out that the googly eyes are the opposite of the bagel. So much interesting symbolism.

I saw this movie and knew it would be in my top 5 of all time. Then I watched it again and realized what was really going on and fell in love with it all over again. So glad you're reacting to it. Love the channel! Keep it up and congratulations!

i really like you adding the perspective about the mother daughter relationship, and how its usually the mother that's the antagonist, and how this movie flips it. this movie has SO many layers, its excellent to see what everyone gets from it.

I just picked up the physical release because I absolutely adore this film. The Daniels deserve so many awards for this. It's such a loving tribute to cinema as much as it is a touching story of the human faculty to find meaning and purpose. It truly encapsulates the feeling of being. Not being anything in particular but just existing in a moment of time. It's all these chaotic swirls of emotions that don't always coalesce or make sense because WE don't always coalesce or make sense. I flipped from laughing and crying, back and forth, multiple times in the span of seconds. Still the best film I've seen in treaters this year.

I first heard about this movie when it hit the festival circuit and I knew it was going to be a good time, but I wasn't prepared for how deeply impactful it would be. Easily my movie of the year, maybe movie of the decade???? Literally nobody else making movies/tv in this new multiverse trend is coming anywhere close to EEAAO. Also gotta shoutout to @MartialClub, the dudes who did the fight/stunt choreo and performances. They're keeping the traditions of old school HK cinema alive and were over the moon about getting to work with the legendary Michelle Yeoh. There is so much love packed into this movie!

the movie is a mastepiece. it has everything a great movie needs - complex characters, simple yet touching and relatable story, a ton of weird, fun action sequences and so many different emotions put into this. you can really feel this movie was made by people with passion for cinema and not by a dumb corporation following some stupid steps trying to please everyone, when everything everyone needs is a story like this. a story that might seem crazy and provocative at the beginning, but turns out to be so deep and thought provoking in the end. and for me it's the first time that i actually believed in the overused power of friendship and kindness. here it really seems like an actual power and not just a way to make a protagonist able to do anything a few seconds after being blasted by the antagonist, like in so many sci-fi or superhero movies :P it's just perfect the way it is

Michelle Yeoh is blowing up -- she has a great cinematic and TV resume, "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings", "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "Crazy Rich Asians", "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2", "Kung Foo Panda 2", even "007 Tomorrow Never Dies" , and so many others. This movie her acting is amazing, even though the crazy plot makes it hard to get a grip on the character. She really can do all those Kung Fu moves and stunts! Look for her voice parts in "Minions: The Rise of Gru 2022", and others. "The School for Good & Evil" coming this fall, and at least 3 Avatar sequels, including "Avatar: The Way of Water", where she apparently gets top billing, and that is something considering the A list cast including Kate Winslett, Signourey Weaver, and Zoey Saldana, among others.

Went into this movie completely over hyped. My son told me it was life changing, by little brother said it was mind blowing... I was not disappointed! Plus, Short Round (Data), and Po's dad!

Now that you've seen this, I think it's necessary to watch the other movie the Daniels wrote and directed called "Swiss Army Man." Just as weird and just as heartwarming and introspective.

Seeing this in the theatre with no idea of what the story would be is probably my favorite movie experience ever and that includes Avengers Endgame opening night, this movie is just that good.

I'm late to this video but the first time I saw eeaao, I sobbed alone in a theater for most of the movie. Something about the way Stephanie Hsu was able to portray the numbness of depression really hit hard and I hope she's nominated for best supporting actress. Also love Michelle Yeoh in anything and hearing her talk about how important this project was to her makes me so glad it got the wide release it deserved, all because of word of mouth.

Best Film of the year so far IMO, bawled my eyes out, I want to get the book by the directors more than anything in the world. Id also recommend the A24 podcast they did recently with Dan Radcliffe

This is genuinely an incredibly interesting, weird, bats*** crazy and fun movie with such a solid, heartwarming message in the end. Great cast. Great writing. Great directing. All around great movie! Michelle Yeoh is a treasure. And it was great to see Ke Huy Quan back. I really enjoyed this movie! Great reaction!

Watched this with my mom as an Asian family, it was excellent, heartwarming, thrilling, funny in equal fashion, all of it tying together very well with an emotional core and a fantastic plot which was complex and left room for the actors to grow. All the Chinese we could understand, so the experience was pretty much flawless, and we both thought it was great. Definitely a “watch-with-your-mom” movie.

SO GLAD you got to experience this absolute gem of a movie. What a pleasure to go through the wonderful madness again with you. I've watched it far too many times and have never noticed Alpha Waymond holding Evelyn's ashes and her ashes screaming in the urn in one of the scream montages. Also...fun fact! They got Randy Newman to do the voice for Raccacoonie. One of my favorite easter eggs.

Fun fact, the black hole bagel is visually the exact opposite of the googly eye, with it shown to have a white circle with a black center. Symbolizing the conflicting ideologies of nothing matters to everything matters.

The scene where joy is running from the mom and says she’s tired of it all hit me so hard, every time i see it i get called back to when i was in the theaters and start to get teary eyed.

When waymond interrupts that stand off and says he knows everyone is confused.. he's confused too and feels like everything is all his fault... It such a genius move... He in the same sentence acknowledges and unifies everyone in the room... And removes the burden of blame from everyone else onto his shoulders... Putting everyone else into a more open mindset. As someone who works in conflict resolution a lot... Waymond in a single sentence helped remove 2 of the most counter productive things in conflict resolution: fear/isolation, and defensiveness. An impressive move!

I saw this movie in theatres with my sibling and I went in totally blind. And I LOVED IT! I was sobbing in my seat. Afterward, my sibling and I talked about what our alternative lives would be like. When they were young, they wanted to be a dancer, while I wanted to be a musician. It was really fun to talk about.

Yes, this movie is a masterpiece!!!!! It easily becomes my favourite movie this year.

Something the cinematographer of this movie said in a podcast interview that surprised me was that the Evelyn we see at the beginning of the movie actually dies after that big fight with Joy. The Evelyn we get at the end is a different one. It’s something you might not have realized or thought about but I thought that was sad.

Fun Facts: This movie was shot in less than 40 days. The movie was finished filming back in March 2020. Jackie Chan was the first choice for the lead role, Yeoh was going to play his wife, then they switched to Yeoh being the protagonist when JC had to cancel. Ke Huy Quan (Waymond) was the little actor in Indian Jones (and Goonies). The visual effects were worked on by just FIVE people. SUCH A FANTASTIC MOVIE!

It's such a great movie. I wasn't really on board with it and the hype it received until the moment with the two rocks. Such a simple, powerful and unique moment that serves as a brief break from the chaos of... well everything. Then it pulls your emotions everywhere, and you are laughing and crying and experiencing it all. Then the way it comes full circle at the end and everything makes sense all at once. A truly wonderful movie and I feel bad for anybody that gets stuck on the really uncomfortable hot dog fingers and doesn't finish it.

I have been waiting for this review! I rarely watch a movie twice until I've forgotten everything about it. I've seen this 14 times in a month.

@36:18 - I feel like the daughter was actually the protagonist (anit-hero type) and the mother the antagonist (until the end) in your definition as the basis for the fight was the daughter wanting the connection with her mother (same with Waymond). The mother was the that continued to push her away. Gong Gong was really the only pure antagonist. And maybe Deirdre Beaubeirdre.. Loved that you watched this! It is certainly mind blowing movie in creation and the fact that they were able to pull off this insanity. There are still a ton of things you (and most of us) didn't catch in terms of references, themes, technical bits on this first watch so it is something that will continue to reward on re-watch. Listening to the commentary and watching interviews is good for realizing some of the connections and influences (like Eveyln's actions being based on ADHD which one of the directors was diagnosed with). Also great to read comments or watch reactions from people who are first or second gen east Asian immigrants as the additional connection and insight they provide to how specific aspects affect them adds to the understanding of what the Daniels and team accomplished here. This move really deserves at least a nomination in ever category of every awards show all at once.

This is not just my favorite movie of 2022 (I highly doubt anything else coming out this year will beat it), it's one of my all-time favorite movies!!! When asked, "What kind of movie is it?" I'd have to say, "A sci-fi/fantasy action/adventure suspense/thriller family comedy/drama with horror elements." And the editing for this movie! How'd they do it??? How long did it take??? Just WOW!!!

So many parallels subtly and not-so-subtly made in this movie. One of my favorites is that you don’t learn new things by doing the same thing over and over. In order to learn something new (and grow) is by doing something outside of your comfort zone, or, in this movie, “become an enhanced version of yourself by doing weird shit.”

Oh my god how did I miss that you reacted to this??? I'm SO glad I got to see this in a pre-release IMAX screening. Seeing it on that giant screen with a loud sound system and a big crowd, and their reactions during the film, was one of the greatest movie-going experiences I can remember in years. I just watched the DVD with the director's commentary, which is great, and actually watched the multiverse shots of Michelle frame-by-frame and there are some crazy images they snuck in for just 1 or 2 frames, including one that's a shot of Michelle in front of a green screen while the VFX crew can all be seen on a Zoom call on the right, Michelle's face in the bark of a tree and a bunch of grapes, etc. Most of them you don't even really see. There's also a quick 2 frame shot of Stephanie holding an Academy award in the shot where she is Jobu and holding out her arm while different things change. I hope the Oscars nominate the shit out of this film.

The whiplash absurdity was not just there to break Evelyn from her own reality, but the audience as well, allowing them to fully experience the emotions of the movie more directly. And then wrap them up in a catharsis firmly placed in the real world. Beautifully done. The Daniels also did the movie Swiss Army Man, which shares many of the surreal traits of this one.

The guy who play Waymond is the same kid who played Short Round in Indiana Jones. This one of his first acting roles after returning to it in like 20 years.

Can we please just talk about Jamie Lee Curtis. Who convinced her to do this? 🤣

Great reaction! This movie blew me away! I love every second of it. Saw an interview of Michelle Yeoh where she got a little choked up because she felt she could finally show off her acting chops in this movie. She was able to be funny, dramatic, show off her martial arts, etc. Awesome!
