Who we are Currently in a Spritual war against, so it makes sense for her to tell her Everything is Pointless because this goes back to the Philosophy they are trying to indoctrinate everybody with which is New Age. That there is no point to Life that there is no Good or Evil that those are just made up and that we Can be Our Own Gods and make up our Own Reality which is all just a big Pile of crap. I just noticed the tear coming down her face when she sings at the end. The way she goes from embracing the chaos to slowly showcasing how dead behind the eyes she is to that tear revealing the pain and guilt she claims to have erased is still there in spite of her attempts to warp every reality/universe. I know her "just let me go" bit towards the movie's end is what most would consider the scene that got her the Oscar nomination, but this scene is what really convinced me of her merit.

I don't think most nihilist genuinely enjoy being nihilists, especially in fiction. She doesn't want to believe nothing matters but with everything she deals with by just existing she's convinced herself that the only way to get rid of her pain is to believe that it's all meaningless. In the end suicidal people don't always really want to kill themselves, that's why they hesitate before they jump or drag the knife. They just need to end their pain and and they've convinced themselves death is their only option. This whole movie was Joy's personal suicide note, even she admitted that the whole reason she hunted down this version of her mother was because she hoped her mom would see some kind of meaning in Infinity.

This scene perfectly encapsulates depression and suicidal ideation. I cry every time I see this because it perfectly resonates with me. I've been in Jobu Tupaki's shoes for so long to know this familiar feeling. That nothing matters. When you reached that point in your life, you'll feel you're ready to end things, you'll let yourself get sucked into a bagel. Someone summarized Jobu Tupaki's real intention in the movie: she's a depressed queer daughter who travels the multiverse to find a version of her mother who would feel what she feels, who would convince her not to go to the everything bagel. I'm glad she found that version of Evelyn. For all of us who feel like being Jobu, I hope we find someone like Evelyn who would make us see that even when nothing matters, you matter to someone else. That even if we only get tiny specks of time of pure happiness, we can learn to cherish them.

I'm 41 years old from Indonesia, and this comment really hits me deep, because of how deeply relatable it is for me personally. I've got diagnosed with Major Depression back in 2020. To be honest, my life is a complete failure. I feel like a sad pathetic loser that should not exist, & also a waste of space/oxygen. Almost everyday I have what's called a passive suicidal ideation. But people in real life when they see me they think I'm just a "normal" person, who don't deserve to complain nor whine about my "good comfortable privileged life". Little do people know what's really inside my heart & mind deep down inside. This is also why I deeply relate with the character Joy (or Jobu Tupaki). She is nihilistic, pessimistic, cynical, apathetic, depressed, & suicidal. It's sad that most people who've watched this movie probably wouldn't even understand deeply especially about the character Joy (Jobu Tupaki), and the weight & the deeper meanings of all her words. But for (heavily) depressed people, like me, we can deeply understand her.

When I saw this film in the cinema, I cried at this scene. And here I am in my house, crying again. It really incapsulates he suffocating nothingness I feel in a way nothing else seems to. It's absolutely heartbreaking to have that feeling out in the open to witness, but also very cathartic. The incredible score and Stephanie Hsu's performance hit right at the core of that emotion and make it something true. A difficult feeling, as this kind of emptiness is really difficult to capture without being overwrought, corny or, well, empty. Thanks for uploading the scene.

I’ve been diving in to psychology, space and philosophy in my free time for years and finally found a movie that encapsulates everything I have been thinking. Does anything really matter and what are we doing here really. For the most part of my life honestly it’s been a lot of pain and suffering, but there have been small pockets and “specks” that made all the suffering up to this point well worth it. Even if those specks were just for a tiny shred of time in the grand scale of my existence. This movie nails it 100 fold so beautifully. Still waiting and hoping for my next speck.

I don’t think life needs to have some great meaning, we are specs of dust in the universe, experience what you can, feel everything, then fade into oblivion like everyone else… we have solidarity in that inevitability, don’t beat yourself up thinking you need to change the world, it’s just a slightly larger spec of dust, and theres plenty of narcissistic people to fill that role.

To me, those tiny specks of joy and happiness get swallowed up by the suffering, so even feeling those joyful moments can be very painful since I know there is something bad just around the corner to steal that little bit of joy from me. I don't know if it's even worth it to feel those moments of joy at all if they're just going to be taken away from me by something terrible. Watching this movie, I understood the positive side to nihilism in which we need to find our own meaning in everything, but I can't help but wonder if the things we find meaning in really matter in the grand scheme of things. The way I see it, we all end up dead at the end of everything, so what do our hopes and dreams even matter? There are more negatives in this place than there are positives, so how could those tiny positives mean anything? I know that everyone's different, not trying to say that my viewpoint is the right one, just saying my piece. I guess I'm just way too much of a negative person due to certain life experiences, but hey, at least this movie made me want to feel that my way of thinking is wrong somehow. That way, the world and it's people won't be as awful as I believe them to be and I might finally be able to see something good to help me stick around for a while longer.

The actress who played Joy/Jobu Tupaki is really talented , she has a bright future ahead of her. The way how she played Joy for the emotional moment’s was beautifully done , and Jobu Tupaki for the badass moment’s was cinematically well done.

This movie is my entire life… I never thought I’d see a movie that depicts the struggles of everyday life.. and I learned to love and to just give love. And I tried showing my bf the revelation for years… and he saw it just from this movie… I feel that it still doesn’t matter, but I’ll try my best to not give into the void. And that’s ok.

The close up scene of Stephanie Hsu deserves an OSCAR...sadly she's been overshadowed by the intense campaigning of Jamie Lee Curtis...I hope Stephanie prevails Oscar night although it seems impossible...Kerry Condon and Angela Bassett are also contenders...

I totally agree. It still boggles my mind that there were two best supporting actresses nominations for the same freakin’ movie! And I knew Stephanie Hsu was gonna have it hard to go up against Jamie Lee Curtis, who did great in the film and has had decades more of films in her career yet not even the same level as Stephanie’s acting in the film. Still proud of her and the success of the film, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to see Hsu getting that Oscar. Still, I hope to see her doing more incredible things in the future.

I can't even look at a still of this scene when she says "nothing matters" and then when she sings that weird little song without bawling my eyes out. A scene etched into cinematic history, on par with Morpheus handing Neo the red pill or Darth Vader asking Luke to join the dark side. People will talk of this for decades to come.
