I have seen this movie 3 times and it just occurred to me: at :40, where Evelyn says "But you should be in America... and poor?" and Waymond answers, "I guess I got lucky." Evelyn's face looks quite taken aback. Up until now, the only thing she's seen is how much better her life would have been "without Waymond," and in this moment I think she understands that Waymond's life, too, could have been "better" without her. She's been thinking of him as the problem all along, when in reality... maybe she's a problem as well.

I like that she gets to, in effect, say that in front of/to Waymond in the Taxes universe when Evelyn stands up to Gong Gong in the end, admitting that she is "stubborn, aimless, a mess."

Maybe that's true, but I think the point of the movie is that it doesn't really matter. It doesn't matter what should have happened, what matters is what has happened, and what matters most is what you do with it. And what is the "problem" with just doing laundry and taxes with the one you love. What's the point of having sucess when you can't share it with the people or person you love.

Watching this scene back, I really like how the characters continue to speak in the native language, which obviously makes sense if they had both stayed in China- it's just that a typical American movie would have had the characters speaking English for the sake of convenience for the likely majority English-speaking audience. This scene proves to me that subtitles don't take away from the scene at all, because I remembered the quote "in another life I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you" after watching the movie, but until now I completely forgot that it was a translated subtitle. I somehow completely forgot these scenes were not in English because they were still so impactful regardless of reading subtitles. I hope this opens up a wider variety of films in mainstream cinema

My friend and I came out of the film, we'd both cried a lot, but when we mentioned which moments did it for us, this was the first line we both mentioned. Just thinking about all of the possible loving relationships with people that I won't get to experience because we have to choose only a handful to focus on, that broke me. There are so many people I know I could truly love, but there's not enough time or opportunity to get to know them all on a deeper level.

it's actually more like 2046, the way that Waymond speaks in the scene is almost like an exposition which Mr Chow does throughout 2046. Even the idea of the same character living in an alternate universe but experiencing the same emotional yearning seems inspired by Mr Chow's novels in 2046. In fact, Ke Huy Quan apparently was an assistant director on 2046.

In this world where Evelyn is rich and famous, her life still has that void that seemingly only Waymond could fill. It just goes to show that in any universe one can never find a version of himself that will be perfect and has everything it could ask for. But in any universe, one can always find something or someone to love.

I loved EEAAO. It was my favourite movie from 2022 and might be one of my new all-time favourites. I had no idea these shots were an homage to Wong Kar-wai. Cinema outside a western viewpoint is kind of a blindspot for me (aside from a few outliers like Seven Samurai, Parasite, Old Boy, Godzilla, etc). I recognized Wong Kar-wai's name because I often see his collection for sale on Criterion. Given how amazing these particular shots are, I think it's time I finally check out some of their work. Thank you for this.

Skyrocketed to top 3 for me. I felt the same awe and magic I felt when I first saw Jurassic Park in theaters as a kid. I knew I was watching something truly groundbreaking and original and that I would have a different perspective on life seared into my memory. It deserves all the accolades, nominations and awards.

The entire film is really a homage to Hong Kong Cinema. The combination of the quirky slapstick/absurdist humor of Stephen Chow "mo lei tau" (think Kung-Fu or Shaolin Soccer), the absurdist, nonlinearity sci-fi influences of Wong Kar-wai (like 2046 which Ke Huy Quan was an assistant director in) and the kung-fu action stunts HK cinema was always known for (like Police Story 3: Supercop starring Jackie Chan and Michelle Yeoh) all imposed in a US setting makes this a unique film.

It’s interesting to see that even though CEO Waymond had money and sustainability, he still wasn’t happy because he didn’t have Evelyn. Even though this is a universe where there is money and success for both of them, there is no happiness or joy because they’re not together. Success is kind of meaningless if you don’t have someone to share it with because happiness comes from the connections you make, not necessarily the success you have.

I don't think Ke Huy Quan speaks Chinese (Mandarin to be precise) but he spoke rather well in these scenes, not 100% perfect fluency, but I would still give him 80%. A lot of other Hollywood stars failed to deliver dialogue in Chinese, like the scene in Moon Knight.
@lininrabbit
@lininrabbit 2 жыл бұрын
I think his not-100% fluency totally makes sense. The character looks like someone born during the 60s. And their generation, 90% of people didn't speak perfect mandarin, most people speak with an accent.

He does speaks Mandarin and Cantonese fluently. In the movie most of his dialogues, especially those talked to Evelyn, were speaks in Mandarin. In this scene he is speaking in a tune that characters in Wong Kar Wai's films use.

To me his mandarin sounded more believable and natural than Michelle in the movie? Michelle's mandarin accent is kinda Cantonese (Hong Kong mandarin accent) mixed with English (ABC accent) when she fist started speaking her mandarin lines I was a little taken aback. But Key Huy's manadrin sounded kinda like how Malaysian or Singaporeans spoke

It is kind of strange that Ke Huy Quan still sounds and looks so similar to how he looked and sounded when he played Short Round in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and Data in "The Goonies," but at the same time still looks handsome and mature enough to be a leading man here

This movie has so many dimensions. Evelyn (Michelle Yeah’s character in the movie) switched between 2 Chinese dialects, Mandarin when speaking with Waymond who would have come from northern China and Cantonese with her father who would be from the Canton province in the south, also where many 1st generation immigrants to US were from. Then with Joy she spoke mostly English as the daughter could barely speak either Chinese dialect fluently. It was said in some analysis of this movie that the constant switch between 3 languages is a reflection of how Evelyn existed in and experienced multi-universe.

They tweaked the meaning lowkey of the translation, like the literal translation would be ‘If we were together in another life, I would still choose to do laundry and taxes with you’ which I think hits harder but that’s just imho

Ke Huy Quan acting was so solid despite having to play multiple versions of a character. Yeoh had already proven with Crouching Tiger that she had range beyond action hero; so her performance wasn't as surprising. I really hope the Academy doesn't look over this movie, I feel like the pandemic and its effect on Hollywood will have them nominate a bunch of pretentious titles that just emphasize acting over a films message; and the whole point of this film was not allowing current nihilism to beat you.
@AngelofMusic04
@AngelofMusic04 Жыл бұрын
I think it's gonna be impossible for it not to be nominated. The fact that people are still talking about it so passionately half a year later whereas I don't see anyone talking about last year's Best Picture winner, plus that it was a big financial success for A24 and career revitalizing for Ke Huy Quan is enough to guarantee it'll be in the top 5. Right now, I think the most likely Picture contenders are: "The Banshees of Inisherin" "Everything Everywhere All at Once" "The Fablemans" "Top Gun: Maverick"
