Great movies are often simply: A good idea executed perfectly. Not so great movies are often: A great idea executed poorly. It’s a lesson someone taught me many years ago, one I’ve never forgotten, and one which has proven true at every turn. Except Sharknado. Because nothing about that film was good but somehow…

This was one of the first movies where I easily recognized the "Setup" and "Reminder" before the "Payoff" and wasn't dissapointed by how obvious it was, it handled everything almost perfectly (in my opinion), from the water pipes, to the cloth in the vault lock and the oxygen tank/timer.

Btw for reassurance- you are right about how a lot of disabled kids grow up kinda fast and learn how to handle themselves earlier than most because they have to learn how to adapt everything to accommodate them because the world refuses to do that for them (cause… ya know… actual ableism!) It’s not everyone obviously (like you said, disabled people aren’t a monolith!) but it is much more common than in abled kids
@brigidtheirish
@brigidtheirish Ай бұрын
Actual ableism and the limitations imposed by reality. Designing everything to accommodate one disability would make things that much harder for another disability. For instance, making things extra loud for people with reduced hearing (not total deafness) would be unbearable for people with certain types of sensory processing disorder. And that's not even getting into the inconvenience, at best, to people who don't have disabilities. It's just not reasonable to reduce the comfort of the majority of a population in order to make a minority more comfortable. Then there are situations where accommodations are physically impossible. My dad's disabled from birth, mobility issues, and lives where water is a mineral half the year. No one's going to be able to remove all ice from all walking surfaces all winter. And that's just *one* thing.

That's the thing that annoys me most about how people discuss these movies. "Why didn't the army figure out they're weak to X frequency!?" like why the hell would they on day one immediately think of that? About the Alien’s inability to swim: luring them to the water wouldn’t work, because the Death Angel’s aren’t stupid. Not as smart as humans, maybe, but they’re generally pretty careful and precise with their movements. The one that swam in the basement took it slow to check the water, the one that fell off the dock was focused just on the sound. And of course, Death Angels can leap pretty damn far. I'm disabled and I paused with impressed and pleased shock at 7 minutes 29 seconds because of how insightful that was, thank you. I have an invisible chronic illness so I don't look disabled and I have a whole suite of "oh god I need to explain the realities of my illness to this new person for some reason" comforting behaviours/phrases/stories that I've reflexively developed over the years. There's just layers of extra emotional work expected of a disabled person in society, and even in the best case it's generally practical to spend a lot of time reassuring others and validating them for any acknowledgement of your personhood (even if that acknowledgement was insulting or ableist or problematic for you).

All 3 of these movies were perfectly executed. Just watched Day One, and the person that I saw it with said it was ok because you don’t know where the aliens come from. That, I honestly think was a big problem with older, sci-fi horror/thriller movies. Why the f*** does it matter where these things come from? How is that helping the survivor’s situation? How does that help the situation? Movies that dedicate whole sections of a movie to telling you the back story of these aliens is just to make the story take longer. Be honest, are you really interested in the planet and origin of these creatures, or are you more interested in how these people are gonna beat a acid-bleeding pitch black creature, or a camouflaging weaponized hunter, or a quick-as-hell lengthy monster that kills/destroys anything that makes a noise.

I see a lot of "Quiet Place movies are bad, actually" takes and it's always so shallow. They're the kind of mid budget, impeccably made creature features studios simply don't make anymore. And in an era where so many films and shows, even good ones, have flat and muddy lighting - these films, ESPECIALLY for modern horror, look amazing. The attention to crafting nail biting tension and suspense is also a step above. Some of the blocking and composition Krasinski uses here is, no joke, Spielbergian.

It always makes me so sad how much people felt compelled to "CinemaSins" these movies. Most of the so called "plot holes" were just little details that went unexplained because the movie was about the people, not the premise, and you can find some sort of explanation relatively easily if you think about it for a few minutes. And even if there are genuine contradictions... Kind of who cares? Do you not try to aim for some suspension of disbelief when you watch a sci-fi movie so you can enjoy this beautifully crafted story about familial relationships and how far we would go for the ones we love? If you can only enjoy a hyperrealistic movie 100% explained through exposition, whatever, power to you, but why spoil it for the rest of us?

Thanks to your commentary on Edgar WRIGHT I know you have seen the movie Mr. RIGHT so if you could eventually do a video on that, I'd really love and appreciate it because, as we all know, Anna Kendrick and Sam frickin Rockwell is always a win. Also, hello. Tim Roth and the weirdest southern drawl ever? Like, come on.

I still dont understand why the aliens dont eat, like I know the theory that they're like an artificial species or whatever, but having the creatures hunger would be cool for the scare factor

You should have made this video a two parter so you could have “A Quiet Place Part II part I” and “A Quiet Place Part II part II”, it’s a missed opportunity but still a great video 👍

I want to say not ableism, I have done this my whole life. You grow up fast when you are thrust into survival mode. People think we would die first, but I have been stuck trying to make it through life since I was diagnosed. My parents would totally throw themselves at danger for me, but id be doing everything to not put them there

I saw the preview with a live Q&A with the director. Not sure if I will go see "Day One" this movie pretty much covers it. The actor's parents were on set when they filmed the bear trap scene. Emily Blunt was 100% in the car when the bus hit it.

I love 6:56 because I’m hard of hearing and even with my hearing aids on I still have some trouble, and whenever I tell people I’m HOH and need them to repeat what they say they always think they need to be louder when 9 times out of 10 they just need to enunciate

I still think those aliens would be easy for humanity as a whole to beat. Sure lots of us would die, but as soon as the whole noise thing was learned, we'd be making a sport out of destroying them.
