It's Batman v Superman week 2/3! Today's video is the only other time Batman shared the title with someone. Batman & Robin is regarded as the worst Batman of the originals, but I say, no! It's just misunderstood! Maybe the critics were wrong. Right? Here's everything right with Batman & Robin.

In case no one noticed, this was (at the point of its release) the only superhero film to hint at an expanded universe. At the beginning of the movie, Batman says "This is why Superman works alone".

Agreed. I feel like it meant to be campy on purpose as an homage to the Adam West films. People were complaining that 'Batman Returns' was too dark and gothic and they tried to make them colorful and fun (like Marvel movies now)

It would be if the main leads didn't phone it in and play it so seriously, it didn't look so garish, and there wasn't so many tone shifts that made you think it was trying to be Burton again. It's just not joyous enough to be a good parody. It truly is just all a phoned-in mess.
@Elfrunner
@Elfrunner 8 жыл бұрын
It's virtually impossible to take Batman & Robin seriously, even by accident. I don't like like it even though it's deliberately stupid, and I'll explain why. I think the problem has more to do with continuity than style. As we know, people have different tastes and some really do enjoy this movie for its homage to Batman '66, and that's fine. But while Batman & Robin may be homage, it is a sequel to movies that were not. And that's just it. Does anyone really accept Bat-nipples and Bat-credit cards as the natural progression of Michael Keaton's Batman? I rather doubt it. As it was, there were arguments against Christian Bale's Batman joining the DC Extended Universe for fear of undermining the realistic tone Chris Nolan established in his films. Now, as a standalone movie, it would have made sense for Batman & Robin to be like it was, because it wouldn't have affected the quality of the earlier installments. Batman '66 is fine in its own universe. Batman & Robin would have been fine in its own universe, or maybe even as a direct sequel to Batman '66. In fact, if Warner Bros. decided right now to make a campy version of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns as a follow-up to Batman '66 with Adam West and Burt Ward reprising their roles, I'm certain many would line up to see it when it came out. I most definitely would.
@Warriorcats64
@Warriorcats64 8 жыл бұрын
Pfft, it totally is a stylistic issue, I gave up considering it the same universe after Forever. No, it's not nice to look at, too much neon and clashing colors with odd shadows, and too many creepy statues. Also the obvious toy commercial vibes. It's clearly not deliberately stupid, so much as utterly phoned in by everyone.

I think a lot of people do, the thing is nobody was wanting that back in the late 90s. Burton officially killed off the idea of 60s Batman in 89, and this movie seemed like a major step back at the time. With that said, now that the Nolan Trilogy is here and Batman is continuing on, it's nice that we can now look back at this movie for what it is and actually have fun with it. I personally can't wait to see them do a serious rendition of Mr. Freeze on the big screen, but with the Arkham games in existence and everything else going on, Schwarzenegger and his goofy puns are just fine. :D

The Freeze Suit that they use for Batman and Robin is by far my favorite rendition of the armor. The one in TAS was too bland looking and the one in Arkham City looked way too big, clunky and heavy for a sick 30+ year old scientist to effortlessly operate in. This suit not only accurately work as armor but very poignantly shows HOW it keeps Freeze alive. It can be argued that Diamonds as a fuel source and not something like, say, a self-made Liquid Nitrogen mixture doesn't make a lot of sense, but I think the diamonds are more of a means to keep the suit operational rather than a means of keeping Freeze in the sub-zero temperatures.
@pelicanofpunishment6
@pelicanofpunishment6 10 ай бұрын
Diamonds as a fuel source DOES make little sense. But...diamonds are prisms, right? And laser cooling is a thing, right? So...my thought is change it from diamonds POWERING the suit to diamonds focusing the lasers in the suit to keep him cold...and I think you have a winner.

People who point this out are still missing the point. Being a comedy doesn't magically make all of your movie's problems disappear. It takes talent to write a good comedy. Adam West Batman and Lego Batman were genuinely clever, well written comedies with a coherent tone and story even when they were over the top ridiculous. Batman and Robin is just a fucking mess, albeit an entertaining one. It's ok to enjoy a bad film. But you shouldn't pretend it's not bad.

It`s likely Warner Bros went ahead of themselves when we were ambitious to go ahead with the campier version of the Tim Burton era Batman franchise and hired Joel Schumacher for the job. They were even seemingly proud of Schumacher after he achieved what they wanted for the tone of the series, until they had an "uh-oh" sign come up on their radars as they heard Batman and Robin failed to make up at the box office, as Joel Schumacher himself came to express his regrets about the film and that he tried his best to create entertainment when all he really did was everything studio-related like sexual innuendos and of course: 5:41 while till trying to maintain the campy tone.

This movie came out when I was relatively young and I absolutely adored it. I watched it on repeat so many times, I HAD to have drove my folks crazy with it. Of course, I have always loved Arnold Schwarzenegger-I also watched Jingle All The Way on repeat, even during the summer time. It was just one of those movies that stuck to me as that young age and now every time I see it, I get a great feeling of nostalgia and homesickness. Even though now I see it as a pretty cheesy movie, I'm emotionally attached to it so it's one of my favorites.

8:56 ehm yes and no. Nolan's trilogy helped but it was X-Men and Spiderman that led to the superhero genre that we have today. What TDK trilogy led to was DC turning every single one of his characters into Batman and every movie into a Dark Knight movie.

it's worth remembering that Nolan was originally in charge of setting up the DCEU and was going to oversee the entire thing until he bowed out and Snyder took over. it is the way it is in large part because of nolan and not just indirectly because of a desire to capitalize on TDK trilogy. hell, he originally brought snyder on BECAUSE snyder's tone in watchmen, sucker punch, etc was that similar dark, gritty tone to his own, just more stylized. both saw frank miller's work as massive inspirations.

I actually really liked this movie. And not in an ironic kind of way, I genuinely like this movie. It's fun, and it SOLIDLY fits the silver age style camp of Detective Comics. While I think that Batman, The Animated Series has, hands down, the best Mr. Freeze (thankfully brought back for Arkham City), Arnold Freeze is still just tons of fun, with a few surprisingly emotional moments. Though the real star of this movie is the short John Glover role. His over the top, choking-on-the-scenery performance just killed it for me (in a good way). Is it good? Oh lord no! But like the man said. It's not boring.

I first saw this movie back in 2009 roughly 2.5 hours into 4-hour bus journey returning from a school trip - about 30ish kids aged 12-14 travelling on a bus in the middle of the night and the movie held our attention the entire time. We laughed, we were invested in the Bruce/Alfred relationship, we were all perplexed at Barbara not having an English accent despite supposedly having lived here for years, one of my female friends had her bi-awakening thanks to Uma Thurman in tights and a leotard... It was a genuine blast to watch precisely because we all instinctively took it for what it was: a live-action cartoon. And we genuinely had fun watching it that way. With the plethora of "dark and broody Batman" movies out there - to the point where they're honestly all becoming kind of "seen one, seen 'em all" - this movie is actually kind of like a breath of fresh air. Same with the Adam West series. At least they stand out from the crowd; whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is up to everyone to decide on their own, but while there's a lot (like...a *lot* ) of Batman works like The Dark Knight or the 1989 film (in terms of aesthetic, character choices, general style, etc), there's nothing else quite like the Joel Schumacher Batman films. Like I said, everyone can decide for themselves whether that's a good thing but personally, I've always thought the worst thing a piece of media can be is boring; Batman and Robin is a lot of things but it certainly isn't that. Really, the biggest thing holding this movie back was the three "heroes" playing it far too straight - Chris O'Donnell comes the closest to reaching the necessary levels of camp (I mean, it's difficult to be given lines like yelling "cowabunga" while air-surfing and *not* reach some levels of camp), but if he, George Clooney and Alicia Silverstone had really just...let go in the same way Adam West and Burt Ward did in the 1960s series once they realised what kind of show that was, I truly believe that the audiences would have got the joke better than they did with them playing it straight.

Solarstar10 To say Dark Knight Rises is "good" is fucking blasphemy. It not only tried to take itself too goddamn seriously and failed miserably but from the beginning of the movie to the very end it made Batman, the main hero, a complete bitch! Everything people hated about Christian Bale Batman was increased ten fold resulting in a film where he sounds like he's gonna die in a few months from lung cancer and is so incompetent he was easily outsmarted by even Catwoman. Watching this atrocity made me sick to my stomach, seeing how they went too far in "humanizing" him and ultimately making him next to worthless. I wasn't even watching Btaman, I was just watching another one of those fakers wearing hockey pads. Don't even reply, I refuse to listen to you or anyone else who "likes" that piece of shit. The Dark Knight Rises is a brilliant movie and I will justify that statement with the following explanation: Firstly, you say about humanising him to the point where he was a "Complete Bitch". This version of Batman lost everything. His family, his chance for love, even the power he had to make the world a better place through Batman. He lost everything that drove his will to live. Him starting the film as weak and to some degrees incompetent makes sense because he's out of practice, tired, a broken man. You know what he's capable of but he's so defeated, you feel empathy, you feel how everything's been taken from him. Yet despite everything he's lost, when he sees that he needs to, he forces himself back into the game. Completely hated, tired, older and weaker he goes back out there, showing his slow return to strength. Then, he faces Bane and gets his ass kicked. Of course he does. Bane's a highly trained soldier at his peak, Batman is barely that yet, he's more Bruce Wayne trying to take up his old mantle. He's gone beyond the fear of death because he has nothing to live for but that's weakened him most of all. Batman's moral core is ultimately his parent's death: The ultimate fear of death if you will, yet all he wants is to die. But he knows he can't. Not yet. Catwoman later asks him to leave everything behind him, reminding him he's given the people of Gotham his life and soul and he responds: "Not everything, not yet". THAT IS BATMAN. Yes, Batman is awesome fighting moves, perfect dry wit and brilliant gadgets. He's fear, he's stealth, he's rage and stoic brooding darkness. But what if you take all that away? What makes him a compelling character; one of the true greats of fiction, when all that is peeled away? It is because Batman is the man WHO NEVER GIVES UP. Who will give everything and beyond to the people he cares about because he believes they deserve it. The Dark Knight Rises took Batman to his absolute lowest point and stripped him back to basics. It showed what the true moral heart of this character really is. A man who will never give up. That in itself, through everything he faces in this movie, is compelling and brilliantly realised. The Dark Knight Rises explores the idea of Batman broken arguably better than any other piece of Batman media ever has. He's lost everything and is thrown into what could be seen as this movie universe's version of hell. A dark, brutal prison. No hope. Torture in Bane's own words: "Not of your body, of your soul". Physically wrecked, emotionally devastated, spiritually broken yet he keeps going. He FIGHTS BACK. That is the mark of a TRUE HERO. Someone who will never give up. Not someone who always acts awesome but someone who can never truly be defeated and there is nothing "faker" about this version of Batman, because he shows Batman's fundamental characteristic at it's strongest. This entire idea is executed through one moment in the film, one sequence: The Third Pit Jump. THIS is the first moment, BATMAN is truly on-screen. Before, we've had the man earning the mantle or trying to be what he has lost. But this scene is the epitome of why Batman is a great character. Because faced with almost certain death, terrified, with everything to lose, he makes that jump, that leap of faith, that leap of FEAR & grabs onto life with both hands, freeing himself and reclaiming his mantle in this moment. No Batman movie which fundamentally explores the character's strength in such an emotionally resonant and powerful way can ever be "Shit". This may not be the strongest, most badass version of the character. But it is arguably the bravest and that is why this film succeeds. Because it is emotionally compelling. Besides that, there are many other things to like: Each action set piece is dynamic, unique and has something about that it contributes to the main story and/or character dynamics/growth. The opening action scene is tense, intriguing, brilliantly filmed and produced and an attention grabber. The bank robbery is story-progressing as well as character progressing, rich in atmosphere and laden in the pain of Batman's character. The first fight between Bane is a soul-crushing defeat of an icon, beaten down to his lowest point & the second fight between them is a brutal, powerful, fist pumping adrenaline ride where Batman finally takes victory and shows his will can truly overcome all. The movie has strong acting. Christian Bale excels as the lead, a broken destitute man who will rise again to become a legend. Tom Hardy may not be Heath Ledger but he puts a fantastic turn in as Bane, giving him a screen presence that rivals and exceeds every other character on-screen, making him a huge physical threat. Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Joseph Gordon Levitt & Gary Oldman take their roles and run with them, doing strong jobs each, Michael Caine in particular impresses. Anne Hathaway is a solid interpretation of Catwoman and Marion Cottilard is one of the weaker aspects of the film but does a reasonable job, besides her death acting which is unfortunately underwhelming. Hans Zimmer's soundtrack is beautiful, raw, laden with emotion, it moves you, making you feel the rise and falls of each character. It's a fantastic addition to his stellar career. The set design is memorable, each location feels distinctive and the prison is a work of cinematic art, it's a wonderful set which never fails to convince and fill with dread via it's mere presence and scale. The visual effects; brilliant, practical stunts with limited CGI hugely impress and the production values are strong all across the board. The Dark Knight Trilogy is not the Arkham series. It does not have the incredible strings of goon smash ups that does. It is not the Animated Series, so laden in pure atmosphere of the Batman Character, so committed to the bizarre and brilliantly creative tone. It's not the Justice League show, where he constantly owns gods and men, almost never faltering or failing. The Dark Knight Trilogy is the Batman of OUR WORLD. The one who makes mistakes, who can be beaten, bloodied, bruised and credibly pushed to the brink of death. But fundamentally, the Batman who will never give up and his will against everything he can facem is what makes this trilogy and this film compelling, brilliantly written and one of the best film trilogies in recent years. And if you disagree with that, I look forward to your response.
