When the franchise is so good that even the "Worst Movie" is a 7/10

Week 181 of Asking For Everything Great About Dead Man's Chest

I've always liked Cinema Wins more than Cinema Sins. It's great to have our favourite movies validated, even if they've otherwise received scathing or lukewarm reviews.

I’m a DIE HARD Kung Fu Panda fan who was pretty disappointed in this film the more I thought about it. But even I will admit that my favorite part was watching Tai Lung give Po some credit and seeing the two of them end on good-ish terms. I truly believe Po amd Tai Lung would be friends in another universe.

Remember kids: if you like something, you like it. Don’t let anyone hamper on what you love. Don’t be part of the group think crowd; and don’t let what others say impact how you love something. Don’t let them have that power over you. Defend what you love, because you are the one who sees the beauty in what people don’t see and that’s okay. We need different perspectives, we need those different voices. It might feel like it’s just you against the opposition and that is completely fine.

Lee, your wholesomeness is just... Needed. Absolutely. No pressure, but I hope you never stop. Or if you do, no problem, we will have your legacy here, or wherever, but man, you are just... Needed.

I think the Chameleon could have been a lot better if her plan was specifically motivated by Po. In particular, him being made Dragon Warrior highlighting the unfairness and double standards of her being declared 'too small'. "You were too fat, too lazy, and too uncoordinated, but you got a chance and became a legend? Whilst I was just too small, and I got kicked into the gutter. Well now I own those gutters. And I want your chance and your legend now too."

That cover of Hit Me Baby One More Time was amazing.

Word of God: In her Discord interview, Stephanie Ma Stine stated that (per production designer Paul Duncan) Shifu used Chi manipulation to restore Oogway’s staff to its original state before it was broken by Tai Lung.

Can we appreciate that the treasure that tiny Zhen tried to steal when she met the Chameleon was a jewel (aka fake or decorative) peach pit, symbolizing a false destiny

I wish instead of the movie being about Shifu telling Po he needs to pick a successor, Shifu instead announces he wants the Furious Five to disperse across China to spread his teachings. Have THAT be the change that Po and the rest have to adapt to. Then they go have their one last big mission together to stop the Chameleon where they all realize the value in change and we get a tearful good bye at the end of the movie. Scrap the character of Zhen entirely.

If anything people should at least respect it isn't butchering Po as a character. He still grows each movie in just a little way, this one does feel like a natural journey in his story, and honestly at this rate I'd rather they just go hard in and make the final film with Po where he willingly goes to the spirit realm just like oogway did. Or at least old and grizzled with his own cast of new champs. He deserves a full conclusion at this point.

14:00 This is also a nice callback to when Po tried to reason with Shen back in Kung Fu Panda 2, with Chameleon responding in a similar way.

My greatest problem by far with this movie is the villains motivation to steal kung fu techniques. "They said I was too small" says the chameleon, while standing next to a viper and a mantis. Would have felt more believable if she was accepted by different masters and tried to learn and eventually copy other styles, but found her body couldn't keep up, so she turned to magic. But still an enjoyable enough watch.

Would've been nice to have J.K. Simmons and Gary Oldman on board, but, eh, budget. Still a fun movie and glad it was covered. Now we just need The Bad Guys.

I love how they showed each bad guy. This movie was weird at first, but it's definitely still good!

Definitely like the parody between the peach pit Po gave to Zhen and the one the Chameleon gave her. The Chameleon’s is made of gold and a ruby, so while it may be worth more now, it won’t grow into anything. On the other hand, the one Po gives has little to no value, but will grow and become something beautiful. That in it of itself has a pretty solid message behind it. Honestly over-hated movie IMO.

14:01 I’m surprised you didn’t win the Chameleon constantly changing her shape whilst fighting Po using all of the warriors’ abilities and physiques to her advantage. I only saw the film once and I still remember the moment she hides behind Shen’s feathers and then punches Po through said feathers with the fist of a different much larger animal! I kind of giggled in awe of that scene! 😁

Movie is fire idc. Also kinda funny seeing people find out this series was meant to cover movies that aren't universally loved lmao

About the Chameleon: I like her design, the voice actress did a decend job and her powers look AWESOME!!! But the director gave the writers NOTHING to work with... The past 3 villains got a backstory and understandable motivation to why they are evil. All the Chameleon did is push someone down some stairs because she got rejected by the gym.

Something I love that you didn’t mention is the parallels between Po and The Chameleon. They both had the same backstory, both wanted to learn Kung fu but were mocked and ridiculed based on their appearances, with Po being too fat and the Chameleon too small. However, they took different paths from there. Po embraced who he was, used that to his advantage and made it his own. And through that, he got respect, love, and Kung fu. Meanwhile the Chameleon decided to take the easy route, turning to magic to simply take what she wanted from those who already had it. They serve as mirrors for each other both visually and narratively, and I really wish the movie focused on it more. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. I liked it more than 3, though that personal opinion. This movie is gorgeous, and the fight scenes are super fun and interesting. I had a blast seeing it in the theatre

I really love KP 4's message of the older generation passing their knowledge on to the next , and how it serves to contrast Po and Chameleon's relationship with Zhen. Po treated Zhen as an equal, teaching her all throughout their journey, and earning her trust, before eventually taking her on as a proper apprentice at the end. Chameleon, meanwhile, despite referring to Zhen as her apprentice, never actually taught Zhen anything she knows, like her sorcery techniques, and instead treated her as a glorified servant, and was more than willing to kill her off without a second thought.

I'm a little bummed my favorite Tai Lung line didn't get in. Scott asks Tai Lung, who he's rooting for and his response is, "I don't know, I'm very confused."

I have LOVED every KFP movie prior to this, but Didn’t care for Zhen. I’ve got nothing against Awkwafina and have liked her in plenty of other stuff, but I’ve never liked this kind of character. Vanelope, Nimona, Zhen, etc. Replacing the Five with her was a letdown. And now she’s set to be a new main prominent character for any other future properties…. I’m not excited for that. Still, great animation and Kung Fu as always.

Bull in the china shop scene had me rolling

I will give this movie credit that it added a lot more variety to the animal characters. In the first film it was mostly geese, rabbits, and pigs as the background characters. But they gave us way more this time.

Im still hoping you might make one for Migration and The Bad Guys one day.

I am glad it isn’t considered a bad movie. I am fine with a mediocre movie. It’s just good to see Po again.

I think with Kung fu Panda 5, we need to see the return of the Furious Five to the main spotlight alongside Po in order to deal with a terrifying threat more powerful than ever before. Maybe Ke-Pa or someone of that sort.

The hug also seems like a reference to Kung-Fu Panda 2 since like Tigress Zhen is trying to stop Po from making a huge mistake, and both times it doesn’t work but for different reasons. In 2 Po was being desperate and stubborn to know his past, in 4 Po was heading in cause he knew it was the right thing to do and that he couldn’t standby when there’s a villain to stop, so a hugging, callback, and character growth win

I like how even in your review of the movie, the Shifus on Po’s shoulders have left and right audio that corresponds with the shoulder they’re on

a lot of people complained that the past movie villains didnt seem in character, even outside of not speaking. my theory is that the spirit world gives those sent there peace and clarity. kai didnt have that cause he was sent by the wushi finger. his later proper death likely made him fully one with the spirit word. tia lung was send by the finger too so was alive and prob why he still retains much of his normal personality.

Honestly, you should check the Dragon Knight show. It's surprisingly good, and you would love it a lot. But I understand if you're too busy to watch movies for the channels and complete shows at the same time

It's animated in the same style, just toned down since naturally tv shows have less time for fine details. It's a personal favorite of mine. Just saw this and came for this video. It's a really fun and pretty film, the story is kind of telegraphed on the themes department but they are good themes and the wee bit childish humor is not enough to ruin the good jokes and lines. Given how good the original trilogy was this is film is in the high shelves of "best possible things following a complete series". Keep up the great work and take care!

I had no intention of watching this movie but now I can support you and find out what happens, gas.

The one thing I really dislike about this movie is how shen seemed to be on Po's side at the end of the movie. If shen had a second chance of fighting po he would take it in a heart beat, he literally died disagreeing with po and quite willingly to. He is evil incarnate and to become good so quickly just felt like a slap in the face. The second movie spent so much time (effectively) carving out shen and his character just to have it ruined in a few quick seconds just for a quick either cash grab or callback to the fans.

I'm honestly surprised that most of the people watching the KFP 4 missed the parallel to KFP 1. 'One often meets their destiny on the road they take to avoid it'.

"KFP/Raratouille crossover in the style of Food Wars/Dunmeshi" Those are two extremely different anime my dude 😳

Two major issues I had with this movie. 1: I didn't see much of the advertisement for it, but most of what I saw put heavy emphasis on Tai Lung being back. So when Shifu told Po he had to choose a successor, I thought the story would be about Po helping Tai Lung overcome his issues from his past, and eventually choosing him as his successor, bringing things full circle and allowing Tai Lung to finally fulfill what he'd believed to be his destiny. So when I saw that little fuzzy person slipping into the palace, I was immediately disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I love literally everything about Zhen, but she also reminds me of the story we could have had. 2: The Chameleon's motivation of wanting to learn kung fu but being rejected because of her size would have been fine. It even ties her back to Po, who also had people think he'd fail because of HIS body. There's just one problem...Mantis is a fraction of The Chameleon's size. Like, girl, did you not try the Valley of Peace? Things I liked. 1: It's honestly cliched at this point for the villain to pull the "you and I aren't so different" trick, but you almost never see the hero turn it back on them like Po did. It didn't work, obviously it wouldn't be that easy, but I appreciate that he went for it. Kind of disappointed you didn't win it. 2: Both of Po's dads acting like a married couple. I love it. Also, you are COOKING with that crossover idea!
