This movie and Edge of Tomorrow got me back into Tom Cruise as an actor. His personal life aside, the man is a committed professional and legit elevates everything he touches. There exists a far shittier version of this movie with an actor who would undersell this performance, but not Tom

Probably one of the most sentimental sci fi movies ever made. It's actually a "eternal love" story wrapped in a sci-fi costume. Classic.

I saw this movie in a huge theater at night - all alone. Not a single person there. Kind of made the experience more powerful since the Tom's character is almost alone on Earth during parts of the movie.

One of the things I noticed while watching this film was that in the beginning Jack's suit is pure white, but as he starts to doubt/question everything his suit starts to get dirtier until the end of the film, where his suit is so dirty that it's dark grey, almost black. It could be completely coincidental but I like to think that it's a metaphor for Jack regaining his *true* humanity. Notice how the humans that are still alive are wearing mostly black too.

I always understood Jack repeating his exposition as another sign that he was mind wiped and programmed with that.

I remember when i saw it, i was blown away how the music really lifted it to insane heights..

Thanks for pointing out Vika's own "unrequited love" side story and the idea that she was probably wrestling with her own phantom memories. I hadn't thought of it but it makes sense.

When Jack says to Sally “I want Julia to live, I want my species to survive, this is the only way” ... he isn’t lying, he is 100% truthful. Him going into the Tet, with the Bomb and blowing it up accomplishes all those things. Watch Tom’s face when he says it, it’s utter conviction and hence Sally reads him as being truthful

One thing I love about this movie is that the aircraft has accurate controls and mechanisms. In the beginning you see a checklist, during flights the engines change angles in correct methods. I love it

Along with 'Edge of Tomorrow', this is one of my favourite recent-ish sci-fi movies. I'm not a big fan of Cruise, but he played these parts pretty well.

I think this is a very underrated sci-fi movie, even if the story that eventually transpires is never as interesting as the look of the movie.

Not many people have mentioned it but as a cosplayer, I really love the props and costumes in the movie. They don't look overly futuristic. I love how I can see stitches and textures of the fabric so up close. some of parts scavs wear do actually exist in real life as well.

The critic reviews for this movie are bullshit, calling it boring and "thinly scripted". People are honestly spoiled. I thought this movie was fantastic, I love the post-apocolypic meets futuristic visual style, and the soundtrack is amazing. Also Tom Cruise.

I always thought the reason Jack seems to repeat the opening text about his mission verbatum is because that is how he is programmed to answer. The Tet does not want the clone to forget its prime directive. Much like in (the much worse movie) Men In Black International, when Chris Hemsworth is asked what happened on top of the Eiffel tower he always repeats the same statement word for word because it was what his brain was reprogrammed to think happened. So i don't think it's lazy script writing, more the film trying to tip off the audience that somethings wrong subtly.

This is one of my favourite Tom Cruise movies. I've seen it 10 or 15 times, and I love it each time.

It's nice to watch a video that is promoting "all the things great" instead of criticizing all the faults. That's refreshing. As Renoir said, “There are quite enough unpleasant things in life without the need to manufacture more.”

It's a proper high-concept art-house sci-fi flick and it's just a gem of a little movie. Gimme more like this, Hollywood.

I like how Jack’s dreams (memory) of him and Julia are faded, worn, and not fully together, then once Julia tells him who she is we see the entire memory in color like he can finally see clearly.

“Are you still an effective team?” The only thing I remember about this movie was that line and Morgan Freeman’s Morpheus cosplay. Not to say he looked bad, he just looked like a cyberpunk grandpa.

I love this movie but what really sold it for me was the score (it's incredible!!) and the colour scheme as weird as that sounds but some movies everything is just so bright and the washed out tones gradually becoming more vibrant is just perfection

I love this film to pieces. One of my favourite things was seeing it in cinemas the the oppressively loud drone noises made it SO much scarier... really driving home the hostility of the drones even while you thought they were the good guys

I feel bad for Vika. She was so lonely she gave up everything to have the life she new she never would have had otherwise. It’s messed up but still pretty sad.

You forgot to win the fact that when Vica tells Sally her and Jack aren't an effective team. The reason that they're so different is reflected in their costumes. Jack's costume is white and so is Vica's but his is all dirty from being down on the surface and he's actually experienced the world hence he has been changed by it while her outfit is also white but it is spotless. This then leads to the awesome line of "there's things you should know," "I don't want to know!"

You can see "undertone" influences from Soderbergh's Solaris too in a lot of recent good scify movies, like Blade Runner 2049 and Spielberg's AI

You missed the part of how every time Tom cruise pushey a button or pulls the lever or spins it around, that's real because they actually built the bubbleship, it didn't fly or anything but stuff rotated buttons made noises, I think you should watch that process of building the bubbleship you'll find out something interesting as well

5:28 - Another serious Win here is the reference to Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities, which foreshadows the ending of the film. In the book (spoilers), the protagonist ends up sacrificing himself to save a man who looks like him and loves the same woman he loves. Pretty neat.

To me, this is one of Tom Cruises best movies. Its beautifully crafted and designed. The music is just perfect. It binds the story and the characters in this movie perfectly. The story itself is just beyond what meets the eye. The search for his humanity is deeper than most movies. Trying to find his place in the world he calls home, yet nothing is really the same. Home is more then a place in the clouds. It connects us to our past, our present and future. I enjoy watching it. It's just one of the movies that will mean more to some then to others. Home, love and the road less traveled is the path we look for to get us there. Great movie Tom.

I've always believed Jack49's memory breakthrough, happened because his Patrol Area was his own _pre-Tet Home !!_ 😔 He was getting memory jolts _EVERY single day!_ Plus the enormous emotional, physiological feedback of finding Julia and emotional response of being with her. Wouldn't be surprised if Tet was forced to spend crazy % of it's computing power, just watching this *single team!* As they were most likely to fail to *"be effective".* (The more I think about it, maybe the 5 year "memory wipe interval", is only even needed for *this* "Homebase" Jack?)

Something else I thought interesting, and its probably not an original thought in the slightest, but both Jack and Vika mention that they only have two weeks left in their rotation, despite it later being suggested through visuals of the hydro-rigs that it could take quite a bit longer than that before the planet's oceans are completely consumed. Calling it a rotation implies it's an ongoing process that either began five years ago or was already ongoing and is to be taken over by another team afterward, but there's no mention of being replaced by anyone. Vika does say in the scene where Jack is watering his plant atop a mountain that once they are gone, the Scavs will only have "dust and radiation" but that sort of flies in the face of it being a "rotation". Even in that same shot, it establishes that there's a lot of water left despite the heavy industrial rate the hydro-rugs appear to be consuming it. Moreover, one gets blown up just a few hours later, which would undoubtedly slow the process significantly. Then there's the fact that there's Tech 52 and his associated Vika in a relatively nearby location. Forgetting that this likely indicates there are techs 50 and 51 elsewhere across the fake "radiation zone" navigational barriers, it could be implying there are more hydro-rigs in their zones that they independently cover. I think its more likely there are simply more "teams" inserted by the Tet as needed as the hydro-rigs progress across the globe, following the water supply as it shrinks. All this being said, I am guessing that, in concert with being provided a female companion as a stabilizing influence, Jack clones beginning to increasingly question their reality is likely also why there's a time limit on their "mission" before they "depart for Titan" even though the job might not be complete. I would imagine the Tet had learned either during past conquests of other species/planets or through previous iterations of Jack Harper that there was only so long they could allow fully independent clones to run around before they would go completely rogue in one way or another and would need to be euthanized regularly to prevent it. Granted, this movie is not all *that* deep so I'm probably overthinking it. People mentioning the Yankee's hat despite the "Tet only" statement in the video: obviously scavenged and kept out of sight. He only wears the hat when he's away from the tower. The only thing Vika ever sees that he scavenged from below is the plant.

This movie.....is one of the best movies I’ve seen, definitely in my top 10 maybe top 5....the idea of it......the story......the music (M83), the underlying theme that true love and the power of humanity to prevail. Beautiful, if you don’t lie it, you’re maybe into films that don’t want you to think or don’t care. I loved it, if you didn’t, give it another go......alone and with a few whiskeys. 😉

The beauty, the sadness, the song, the Oasis (I wanna live there), all made me fall in love with the movie. And most movies before this just presented Olga Kurylenko as sexy or hot, but this movie shows how beautiful she truly is & pretty good at acting too.

I’ve watched this movie so many times recently. Really love his “secret” home he built and how he’s collected all these things he’s found and brought it back there. Really great acting and story. I really really enjoyed this movie! Also in the scene where “jack” is playing basketball he’s pretty bad. But thats because He only goes back to that “oasis” home every once in awhile for a short amount of time so obviously he wouldn’t be that good if decent at all.

after watching this, I went and re-watched the movie. Regardless of my feelings about Tom Cruise the person, I can't help but enjoy a lot of his movies, this one is no exception. Good story, good effects, and well acted. Thanks for making my night.

Loved this breakdown. Even had a few things I hadn't thought of myself, and i'm a big fan of the movie. One thing I'd add is that the Jack we follow is nearing the end of his "mission" - weeks away, in fact. It was always his fate to return to the Tet to die. Most likely, the Tet has locked in that short mission time to ensure some level of control over the clones and their ability to figure out the truth and/or rebel over time as they continue to question everything about their missions. If not for the intervention of the other humans, that team would have flown to the Tet and been murdered only to be replaced by a new team of clones in a few weeks time. It's a bit poetic that THIS time, Jack knowingly returns to die & take the Tet with him.

The way Tom delivers that “you won’t believe what’s down there” is pure gold

The way you analysed Vika's dream life being played is so, so excellent! I was honestly so sad when Vika died and Jack moves on almost instantly but you know that he cares about Vika when he asks her to leave the house with him and Julia. But coming back to your analysis, man movie review is a serious job. Diving deep into the story and picking up these small things that build a character in a massive way is not something that comes naturally to every person who watches a movie. But the fact that these small details still exist in the movies shows that the story-writers, directors and actors really care about what they do and present a masterpiece for the audience. Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion are the two movies I blind-watched because of Tom Cruise and I didn't expect much from them but honestly, I love them both!

I really liked this film and honestly wished they’d created novelized prequels or did a prequel series about the Tet arriving and the perspective of Malcolm Beech (Morgan Freeman) or Sergeant Sykes (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) as they lived through the invasion and their attempts to get the “Repairmen Jack” to open their/his mind(s).

For me, what's great about this movie was: Tom fighting himself. It's like he approach himself from behind like it was a meme: 1. "*Teleport behind myself* him: nani? also him: nothing personal, it's me." 2. The shocked expression, unspeakable emotions Tom delivers to audience and end it with a simple word: "What?" ...that, became an everlasting meme, too

Suggestion: do the movie “Unstoppable”, staring Chris Pine and Denzel Washington- I highly suggest it! Attempt #2

I heard how much people didn’t like this film so I went into this expecting to be disappointed. I honestly tried to look at this in a negative view but I couldn’t help enjoying it. Underrated. That’s all I gotta say

That bit with running around your dreams is exactly me. So often I have those dreams and even in dream feel like cheating and like a dirtbag and then I wake up and am majorly relieved.

The music was on point in this film. And when the truth came out with the Morgan Freeman sceen is my fav moment in the film; the whole time chsnges.

This movie is a _MASTERPIECE_ of sound design, especially the drones. The unnerving, overwhelming, bass-heavy noises they make. The intensity of their scanners. The chilling, deadly noise of their cannons. Just awesome.

Oblivion is a guilty pleasure for me. Even with its flaws, I am always enrapt by every aspect of it.

This felt to me as if someone had gone back in time to the 80s and given Michael Mann two hundred million dollars to make a sci-fi film...despite the quality of the effects, it still has that 80s vibe, you know, before everything else did. And no mention of Andrea Riseborough by the pool? Everyone knows you liked it...it's okay to admit it.

Oblivion is one of those movies that I hadn't heard of before watching it. So I had no preconceived ideas about it. And I loved it. Particularly the music. But, I always wonder what happened to all the other Vicas and Jacks on Earth. Julia is going to be a very busy girl.

This is one of the most underrated science fiction films in modern history. The twist is shocking and I never saw it coming. Absolutely LOVE this film...one of my all-time favorites.

Oblivion was one of those movies that wasn't even on my radar when I happened upon it, watched it, and loved it. Loved the soundtrack too. But, what happened with all the other Jacks and Vikas on Earth? Did all those Jacks become selfaware and love Julia? Did Julia love all the clone Jacks. She could be a very busy girl.

You should do Guy Ritchie’s “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword”. It’s very underrated. Classic Guy Ritchie style and great performance by Charlie Hunnam. Amazing score and soundtrack as well. Somehow bombed at the box office but definitely deserves as much praise as “The Gentleman”

One of my favorites. Contained angst, longing, recognition, eerieness, defiance of authority, multi-self, and self-sacrifice in addition to future-tech and action. Hard to beat.

I'm so glad that you liked this movie, when I saw it I really liked it, the soundtrack the setting, and even the plot, it was a bit cliche but enjoyable, there is the idea that if something is cliche in not gonna be good, but that happens only when they copy paste something but without the soul, and when I did go online to see the reviews I was so disappointed that it wasn't as appreciated as I thought.

I freaking love this movie. I own the soundtrack. That scene with Vika in the pool and "Starwaves" playing is like audio visual crack. I've watched this movie probably 15 times and I love it even more every time. Kosinsky is a genius (schooled to be an architect and it shows in his designs). I wish he'd go back to sci-fi. I honestly believe the reason many people don't get this film is simply that... they don't get it.

I loved Oblivion when I first saw it, and ordered the soundtrack in the car on the way home. I bought the blu-ray when it came out, but for some reason didn't open it until a couple months ago. Re-watching it I suddenly remembered why if loved it so much in the first place, and the extras on the disc were great too. This is an original and very underrated movie!

This video made me remember that I saw this movie when it came out. I listened to the soundtrack for weeks and then decided to rewatch it in October of 2020. It's now one of my favourite movies and I still listen to the soundtrack almost daily when writing my own stories. Thanks for making this video and helping me discover yet another one of M83's genius works through the music!
