I would do all your upgrades first. Lift kit , tire etc. Then go get the tune. There is a guy in my area that advertises on FB . He is a Master Yota tuner. He claims he will meet up with you at a rest stop along the highway. I am still on the fence. I have a 2022 4 Runner ORP.

I noticed you said they can use a hptuner for the 4runners yet its not on the hptuner supported vehicle list. Do you know if the the hptuner actually works? The guy in your video used the orange tuner instead. I have an hptuner for my pickup and it would be awesome if i could use it for my 4runner as well.

I think with 35s, you really do need to regear and tune. Longer term, I think you need to consider beefier steering linkages, axles, additional cooling for the transmission and possibly gusseted spindles. Tire weight makes a huge difference as well in terms of wear on the drivetrain and most importantly, stopping distance. Stock 4Runner tires are at around 40lbs? 54lbs for certain LTs. 35s come in at around 69? That's considerable. It's great watching your rig develop. Are you going to do an EV conversion any time soon? :))
@OverlandEngineer
@OverlandEngineer Жыл бұрын
Hmm...EV would be cool. If I could do an R1S Rivian Drive train swap that could be pretty sweet. I'd likely opt for a tundra engine swap or LS swap before though...haha. Yeah, a lot more goes into running 35s. There will be content coming to explain what I have all researched in that area. More to come!

Hey Zach love your content. Quick question, what UCA’s would you recommend for daily driving and very little off road. Currently running Eibach Pro lift with stock UCA’s. Thanks in advanced and keep up the great content 🤙🏽
@OverlandEngineer
@OverlandEngineer Жыл бұрын
Are you having issues with the UCAs and not getting a correct alignment? Are they rubbing on your tires? If you don't have current problems, I personally wouldn't change them. Especially if you do very little offroading. If you need to change them, then I would get freedom offroad for a budget option, SPC for adjustability, and dirt king for high end.
@Deezy_yt
@Deezy_yt Жыл бұрын
I recently upgraded to 295’s with 1.25” wheel spacers and now I’m rubbing my rocker cap pretty bad. I have BMC, Pinchweld, and fender work done, as well as trimmed my rocker cap. My alignment shop was able to max the caster on my stock UCA’s, enough to where I’m not rubbing as bad (rubbing mostly on compressed turns). But seems like they sacrificed a lot of camber in the process. So I’m looking to upgrade my UCA’s to help me get a better alignment. I’m not the most mechanically sound person, so I was looking for as close to maintenance free as possible, or minimal maintenance if any. Thanks in advanced
@OverlandEngineer
@OverlandEngineer Жыл бұрын
@@Deezy_yt that’s tricky…I think dobinsons billet UCAs are adjustable but labor intensive and not quite as adjustable but low maintenance. SPCs are more adjustable but will require some more maintenance. I’m going through this now as well. Some people do a relocate of the little rocker bracket so you can clear all that out.

A little off topic but you brought up you have tried multiple brands of tires. Which ones have you tried on the 4R and which ones did you like the best? Might be a good vid topic in off season...
@OverlandEngineer
@OverlandEngineer Жыл бұрын
Yeah this is a really good idea. So far my favorite all around tire for mud and winter if you do a lot of snow driving in the winter is the Baja Boss ATs from Mickey Thompson. They can do it all. If you want a pure mud terrain, I loved my Geolandar MT 003s they just werent perfect for snow like I wanted (I've heard Toyo MTs are great just haven't tested them myself). For daily driving with mild overlanding, I really liked the AT3s from Toyo, they were really light but still have good tread for some light offroading and they were light weight to keep MPGs up. If you are going Falken vs BFG, I'd go falken. Something has happened with BFG in the past 5 years, have not heard a ton of people say great things. My set was ok but wasn't anything spectacular to note. I tend to stay away from wrangler duratracs, super loud. I know a lot of people run nitto and general but no experience...
@IcyReaper

I don’t currently on a 4runner but I am looking to buy one in the near future. I’ve had five jeep wranglers and a jeep gladiator. 35’s on a 4Runner seem like they’re not worth it, almost like putting 40s on a jeep. I can’t believe how bad your fuel mileage is, it’s almost making me rethink getting the truck at all. With 37’s on my Rubicon gladiator I was getting mid 16s average. That being said I don’t think I’m going to go bigger than 33s, any idea what kind of mileage I would be getting you put out some great videos, and I’ve been watching them for a while even before I was considering buying a 4Runner. Your truck looks great.!

How do you feel about doing your tune but not using a dyno to confirm everything. I've heard the best way is to do it at a location with a dyno? Did OTT address that? Doing something by feel vs seeing the actual numbers on a dyno is way different I'm told. With all the various types of terrain overlanders ride in, how do you check that? Unless you live nearby various types of terrain to try it on..
@OverlandEngineer
@OverlandEngineer Жыл бұрын
Its basically night and day going from stock to a tune. If I was trying to hit certain performance numbers it might be different. A dyno would keep them honest but OTT has been making the news on peak power numbers with magnuson super charger tunes and they are showing dynos there. I'm sure if you reached out they could explain what the baseline tune does. I think the biggest thing with testing the different terrains is thinking about what speed range you are most likely in that terrain and then deciding what sort of engine torque response you want. I'm not sure on YotaTuned but if you could book a dyno somewhere then maybe they can meet you there haha.
@IcyReaper
@IcyReaper Жыл бұрын
@@OverlandEngineer Thanks, I'm not really sold on the super charger. I'm concerned about adding too many things that will reduce how long the 4R would last. I dont remember seeing a vid fromn you about superchargers, you ever thought about that discussion as a vid?

@OverlandEngineer
@OverlandEngineer 3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately still using 4th and 5th. The tune would pin me in a higher gear at low RPMs when I needed power. It was preventing gear hunting but then forcing me out of the power band I wanted for acceleration. This tune rocks for stock gears and 33s. I didn’t like its MPG impact for preventing gear hunting…

@@OverlandEngineer I would expect to see 16-18 mpg out of that thing with the correct gearing/tune based on what others are getting on 35s. I’m curious why there’s such a big discrepancy with your rig, I know it’s heavier with all of those mods but anywhere near single digits mpg is crazy. Some trucks come with 35s from the factory and meet epa standards and so on with +15 mpg

@@OverlandEngineer The regears would definitely help a lot on the archaic 4Runner platform. It being a 5 speed auto in the first place hurts it tons in a world where everything has at least 6 gears these days, while anything with off-road in mind has 8-10 gears. Against popular belief I have heard people get better mpg after supercharging because the low end torque to get you moving significantly improves so that may be worth looking into
