I won’t lie Ed I actually found your channel because I saw your review of the Lumix S 50mm 1.8, and I switched over to the Panasonic S system partly because I was blown away by your content! Unfortunately gear reviews do tend to get more views. But if its any consolation, I’ve been watching all of your other stuff like the grading tutorials and non gear stuff because the quality of your presentation is really outstanding. Like I don’t even have a red komodo but I want to see what you have to say about it, haha. I’m sure next year will be even better, cheers!

I really appreciate the comment, I should have put a section in this vid about comments, because they're a big part of the enjoyment and motivation to keep putting out vids. I'm glad you've been enjoying the vids and it's great to hear the Komodo stuff is interesting as well!

Hi. After seeing this, I thought I’d leave a comment. I also found you though a gear review, the DZO Vespids. But then loved seeing your documentaries, the farmer and type-artist ones are mesmerising. Now I’ve watched so many of your videos. Best of luck w the channel!

Quickly becoming my favourite channel on YT, came for the Lumix content and subbed after watching a few more of your videos! Love that you referred to the sense of play that making video here promotes - I think that comes across so well in your videos. Really excited to see where 2023 takes your channel!

Ed, great videos and love the honesty/natural delivery in your videos. Like most I came across you via the S5 connection. Great to see someone who has mastered the camera you use yourself. Look forward to watching more.

I found your channel because I’m interested in the lumix s5, but I’ve been so blown away by your content and style that I quickly watched almost everything you’ve made. Keep up the good work! And for the non gear videos: look at jake frew, he does a good job using titles and thumbnails to get me to click on those vids. You’ve convinced me to learn manual focus and save up for the s5!

Hey thanks so much for taking the time to check out my channel and especially for the tip on the Jake Free vids that's gonna be super useful going forward with designing non-gear vids, I appreciate it! Good luck with the manual focusing and S5, check back in if you end up getting one!

Well done, well deserved. Love the real down to earth filmmaker vibe you have instead of all these over-hyped KZfaqrs talking only about tech, ''cinematic'' luts, etc. The Dictionary Story on Vimeo made me buy the S5 (the storytelling and images where great too!) and brought me to your channel, but I will say it's the non-gear related stuff that keeps me hooked.

Yeah I think I figured out pretty early on that I couldn't do a loud, enthusiastic KZfaq style. It's good to hear the non-gear stuff is enjoyed by some. Thanks for sticking around, the comments on the initial few uploads were definitely motivation to keep this up, so thanks for that.

Hi Ed! What can I say, first and foremost, the fact that you've been doing the YT-ing thing just for a year and yet you manage to get this level of quality in your videos (flow, b-roll, interesting subjects, etc) speaks volumes of you, so congratulations on that. Regarding what's the best approach for the channel moving forward, I think that (and of course, is your baby so you're the one that has to make decisions in the end) it needs to be primarily something that you enjoy, both making and conceptualising etc, it needs to bring you joy and make you proud, otherwise, you're going to burn out pretty quick. So make the videos that you want to watch, talking about the subjects you want to talk about or that you'd like to see more of in YT. The only way to make something consistently and long term and succeed by doing so is by being true to yourself and your interests, your artistic voice, and I think you're achieving that so far... the numbers will come. All the love from Scotland ;)

Thank you Kevin - I think you're right on all those points, the only reason I'm still doing this is because I enjoy it - that's the only way I can justify fitting it in between my work schedule! The comments and engagement are a big motivator in all this as well so I appreciate everyone who takes the time to drop me a comment or give some feedback!

Good stuff, thanks for putting this together. I always look forward to your uploads. It's a bummer that the non-gear vids don't perform as well as those are far more interesting from my standpoint. Really liked the vid you did about the Farm! Best of luck with everything in the new year.

Just discovered your channel through searching for S5 and also DZO videos. Appreciate the balanced, non-youtuber-bro energy and also the consistent thumbnail game! I'm curious about something you didn't mention which is why do you have a channel? It's nice getting gear to review, but making any film is such a massive time-sink that if reviewers aren't paying you, does the youtube payments make it worth your time? Do you just enjoy it? I love the non-gear videos too, and it's a shame they aren't as popular as the gear reviews, so I hope you'll keep at them for those of us that are looking for other perspectives on filmmaking. Cheers!

Well it started by accident - Panasonic loaned me a camera and I'd thought about dabbling in KZfaq for a while - you know, why not - might be fun! As mentioned in the video it's helped me reconnect with a sense of play when I first got into this work - it gets me out with my camera - trying new things, experimenting - and just having a go at things. Ultimately I would like to leverage whatever I build here to create new opportunities, meet new people and help me make the things I want to make. Free gear isn't too bad either. It is a lot of work and it is exhausting - it doesn't make much money yet (but I have started getting work enquiries through my KZfaq visibility). Lastly, I'm self-taught and there was none of this stuff available when I was first getting into this line of work. As you say there's a lot of male "bro" bravado out there and I want to offer people a quieter perspective on all this stuff - you know where it's okay to be yourself, acknowledge issues with mental health and the realities of working in this industry.

Love the authenticity and transparency of this one! Definitely can relate on so many levels with you, and exciting to see the grow and do so well, you deserve it 100%. I think although it's good to take note of what is working well on the platform, it's so important not to follow the likes of other people and do your thing in your way as you'll just blend into the noise and making the videos will feel like more of a chore/like work. The fact that you're getting brand deals also speaks volumes too. I'm hoping to really dig into my channel next year so it's really useful to hear your thoughts on this as I feel there's a big overlap of the kinds of stuff we do, hence how I found you in the first place! Keep smashing it next year man, excited to see what stuff you come out with :)
@EdProsser
@EdProsser Жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Yeah I think because this isn't a main source of income I don't need to chase the views like my life depends upon it, so I should just focus on making the stuff I want to make. But it is always hard when you invest time into a more personal vid and no one watches it and then you put out a vid with a camera name in the title and it goes wild. I guess non-gear vids tend to get more meaningful comments - as this vid demonstrates. I checked out your vids a few weeks back and assumed you were in California or somewhere based on the beautiful sunset beach vibes, didn't realise you were in Wales!
@bandwagonbull
@bandwagonbull Жыл бұрын
@@EdProsser Yea, I suppose it depends how you want to treat it moving forward, whether or not you want it to become your primary source of income as then you'll start to look at it/treat if differently for sure. I think if you can strike a balance between stuff that does well and stuff you like doing then you're onto a winner! Hah yea man, I got lucky with that shoot in wales as 99% of the time it's raining haha but will be putting out more content soon that will no doubt show a little more classic welsh weather/landscapes. I'm in London quite often though with shoots, and lived there for a few years too!

@@bandwagonbull Yes for sure. I love working on my professional production work - but if this can lead to new opportunities, help fund projects and help me improve my craft then that's good for me. + a bit of free kit and some "passive" income is definitely a bonus. Although I guess it's not really passive when you consider the amount of time invested in making videos!
