In Everything is a Remix Part 1, remixing is looked at as an essential part of how culture is created and evolved. It involves taking existing materials and transforming, combining and copying them to create something new. This has been seen throughout the history of music, from early hip hop samples of funk, jazz and R&B, to later rock bands such as Led Zeppelin who were accused of copying melodies, chord progressions and lyrics. Remixing has allowed individuals to create music, software and ideas without expensive tools, distributors or even skills. It has become a massive part of popular culture and can be seen through memes, social media and Tik Tok.

Art history is filled with remixes. Michelangelo's David, probably the most recognizable sculpture that exists, is also actually a remix of an ancient Greek sculpture. Of course the original didn't have the helmet or the sling, but it did have a stump next to it, which the ancient Greeks would add to sculptures to balance them so they wouldn't fall over. Michelangelo included the stump in his sculpture even though he didn't need to, at least not for the same reasons, clearly because he admired the technique. In short, this kind of thing has been going on for much longer than people think.

It's important to disempower these fictional narratives about originality and genius. Every value we hold that doesn't allign with the actual human experience has a price. Loved this a decade ago, my only problem was that not enough people saw it glad it's back and better.

The original doc was very influential on my process as an artist when I first saw it in on vimeo while in college nearly a decade ago. Glad to see you're still making stuff and I'm excited to see what new stuff you make Kirby :)

I was 12 when i saw the original everything is a remix for the first time and it blew my mind. The quality of the video was so good that its the standard for youtube today (i think the original was in vimeo). Thank you for inspiring me and other people around the world. (And sorry for my english, it's not my first language)

One of my design teachers recommended the original version to us last year. I watched it, and loved it!! Now, seeing the updated version, I can’t wait to see where this series is going. Hearing the Tom Tom Club & one of Neil Cicieraga’s works really made me smile XD

Was that Neil Ciciergia at the very end? Also glad that the avalanches got a shout out. In a world of lazy remixes (ahem, Disney), I was a little hesitant about you revisiting this series, but you really knocked it out of the park. Quite a bit has changed since the first series and I'm excited to see your take on it. It was genius using that Avalanches song at the "all musicians are connected" part, made me tear up, very profound. Your editing is fantastic. Sorry, your remixing is fantastic. You use music exceptionally well. B-roll is on point. Any way thanks a lot, I'm excited about the rest of the series!

Absolutely brilliant. that moment before credits actually made my eyes water a bit. can't wait for part 2. Edit. I was shown the original at my audio college, then googled the Documentary to watch again last week, which is when I subscribed. The universe was telling me a remix of the remix was coming.

I think you hit on a profound message about creativity with this series and I found it very influential when I first heard it and am so pleased you are back retelling it. It just makes you wonder about the kind of fantastical explosion of creativity we would have if all copyright laws went away and creativity stopped being financialised!

I have shown EIAR to every group of students I've ever taught (I'm a visual arts teacher) as a way of introducing and deepening our discussion on originality. I've seen this discussion help free artists from the unexamined and paralyzing idea of 'originality' that almost all of us absorb in our upbringing. Same absolutely applies to my own creative practice - I've learned how to sample (which I was already doing) in a more conscious way, helping my work to grow and deepen. SO HAPPY to see this update coming out!!!

I followed the original back when it was released, and to say the series was transformative on the way I think about creativity, and the world in general, is an understatement. Everything is a Remix reframed fundamental perspectives like a landscape shattering earthquake. I showed it to everyone I knew, and re-watched it regularly. Watching this was, at first, a weird experience. Every change, every direction that differs from the original, felt like an off note in a song you've obsessed over. About 5 minutes in that feeling was gone. The remix is an improvement on many fronts. Sure it's up to date with culture's latest methods of copying, combining, and transforming, but more importantly, the core idea is more coherent. That magic "click" moment that I experienced the first time I watched the original is tighter and sharper. Well done Kirby, I can't wait to see the rest.

Fantastic! As a young artist, the most common advice you get to build skill is to copy.... That's how you gone your craft... As long as you infuse your own personality and perspective, this is how art grows. I think it's mostly capital and copyright ideology that has really tried to make creativity something that is owned and not grown.... Maybe our culture will figure this out someday and find a way to benefit anyone expressing themselves, even if they have to "copy".... because in the end, we never do anything that is 100% original.... it's just not possible! Amazing "remix" here and I'm glad to hear this perspective being shared

I love what Nile Rodgers says about how Good Times was just what he would have done if he'd written Hollywood Swinging. To me that's all any remixing is, even reboots, and sometimes sequels. It's an opportunity for other artists to come in and say "well here's how I'd do it". That's one reason why I was so fascinated with the Snyder Cut of Justice League. You had two directors with roughly the same footage and script but who had wildly different interpretations of the story. I wish we had more of that. I think one reason people really don't like reboots isn't because they tarnish the memory of the original but more because they often feel like cynical cash grabs. I think most people would be a lot more open to reboots if they were made by artists who actually had a vision for the property. If they had an answer to the question "If I had made this, here's how I'd do it". It's really unfortunate that we often accuse people of theft when they're merely coming up with their own version of something by remixing it. I think a big part of the problem is we live in a world where if you're not credited you don't get paid, and if you don't get paid you don't eat.

Both Part 1 & 2 are amazing. I loved the series back then, and I love it now & will share with glee. It's eye-opening to some and entertaining. I do miss the movie part but the new movie insights in part two make up for it for sure. Thank you!!

Also I swear I am not high, but the premise of "everything including evolution is a remix" is sort of a restatement of Spinoza's thesis that all is one substance in endless variation. I might just be saying that because I've been listening to a podcast about Spinoza and because that basic thesis is also the basis of Herbert Spencer espc in regards to evolution, but anyway, love your stuff.
