Well to be perfectly honest in my humble opinion of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view but also by looking into this matter in a different perspective and without being condemning of one's views and by trying to make it objectified and by considering each and everyone's opinions, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was about to say.

That's what satire is. It's great in a way, because it can be interpreted however the viewer pleases. They could be making fun of PC culture, making fun of the people who complain about PC culture, who fucking knows. It's probably a bit of both. The one criticism of satire is that it doesn't actually change minds. Because people can see it however they wish and no definite point is being made, it can't do much more than make you laugh.

The point of the video is up to the viewer to decide, because it's satire. Some satire is clearly making a point, (I can link a few great examples if you want). Some of it is so hard to read that you don't know what they're trying to say, so you can use it to confirm your already held beliefs. The fact that people are fighting over what the point of the video was, shows that the video doesn't exactly have one.

Absolutely agree. A lot of it is having to unlearn common language you used growing up, and it's hard to accept that you've said things that hurt people, even unknowingly. So I understand the resistance to acknowledging that. But on the other hand, I'm a gay person in my 30s and it's amazing to have so much of the casual homophobia I grew up with no longer be tolerated. Plus, not having to smile politely at rape jokes anymore? That's huge. I don't think many people who aren't in marginalized groups understand what a difference this stuff makes throughout your day.

i always think that's it's not difficult to just not be a dick. If I, a child, can simply not use offensive language and "jokes", then why can't fully grown adults? Just because they grew up with slurs being used on a day to day basis and nobody batted an eye doesn't mean that they can't just adapt. I always find that the people who don't understand why they can't use certain words aren't part of the minority/oppressed groups that those words were used to dehumanise...

@JamesR624

Simple. It's both. People using words should spend more time to know what they're saying. People who know what these words mean should sometimes dial back on how easily they get offended. There are no offensive words. There are offensive meanings. It depends on your relationship with the person whom you're engaged in a conversation with. That's the point. There's no "overarching" rule-book on what is or isn't offensive. It changes from person to person and relationship to relationship. "Politically correct" is trying to apply a blanket rule of how people are supposed to feel about each other to individuals.

Some people do play the victim just to win arguments, but if you let that be a reason to disregard the fact that the words people use actually ARE offensive, then you're just as bad as them. It doesn't matter if some people call people out on being offensive for the wrong reasons. What matters is that someone was being offensive. Wrong reasons or not, it wouldn't be a problem if people just expanded their vocabulary and chose their words more carefully. If you don't say anything offensive in the first place, no one will a victim card to play.

Nice vid. As I understand it, CH is pointing out that people who criticize political correctness tend to do it just to be defensive about their own biases and lazy language. Meanwhile, PC culture can get a little overboard sometimes, but is mostly a good thing that people get offended by too easily.
@Enceladeans
@Enceladeans 7 жыл бұрын
I was reading a book (about interjections, oddly enough) yesterday which included the phrase “In these days of political correctness…” talking about no longer making jokes that denigrated people for their culture or for the colour of their skin. And I thought, “That’s not actually anything to do with ‘political correctness’. That’s just treating other people with respect.” Which made me oddly happy. I started imagining a world in which we replaced the phrase “politically correct” wherever we could with “treating other people with respect”, and it made me smile. You should try it. It’s peculiarly enlightening. I know what you’re thinking now. You’re thinking “Oh my god, that’s treating other people with respect gone mad!”
@lordblarg
@lordblarg 6 жыл бұрын
No, political correctness is not treating people with respect. It's treating people like they are baby girls who have skin thinner than a carbon nano-tube. In fact, I am only politically correct around people that I have very little respect for because I am afraid of what trauma they will accuse me of causing to them.

you may be right, but still, if you think about it: strangers, who know nothing of you, jump straight away to their own conclusions, no matter what you say, how you say it, when you say it; shouldnt i consider that a complete lack of respect towards me? The strangers will always jump to their own conclusions, and mostly never listen to reason, so i ask myself: arent we devolving? I personally feel we are regressing, and forget about important matters.
@pedazodeboludo

These days I have to be politically correct around strangers, not around my friends. Which means that PCness == politeness and not much else. Although politeness is nice, I don't want it to be my defining characteristic. I'd prioritize being funny or witty over polite any day. Being all of these things at once is ideal, but not always possible :)
@pisces2569
@pisces2569 6 жыл бұрын
pedazodeboludo PC has its place. No one should be calling people bigoted slurs, and people shouldn't be treated like crap or fictional characters portrayed like stereotypes because they are not white, straight, cis gender, and male. Not to mention, minority groups still have to deal with issues that should be brought up and not laughed off. This is where PC is useful. However, PC doesn't have a place in other areas like comedy, satire, parody, anything that takes place in a not so PC era, or anything that is trying to convey an era like that. (However in comedy, satire, and parody, if anything non PC is not done right, then it loses its meeting and is just plain offensive) Also slang that while derived from slurs but used to describe situations and people that have nothing to do with original targets of said slur words should not be dictated by PC nor should calling a stranger by their sex because you don't know their gender be considered a crime against PC. Basically don't be an asshole
