10 Things I Hate About You was pretty well-received when it came out. And I'm sure lots of folks still love it. It's charming... I get it. But it has sins, man. So many sins.
Next week: Dog sins and Fantasy sins.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

Kind of an inside joke for theater nerds. Most of us are aware this movie was a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew", which was much less jarring than the word-for-word "Romeo & Juliet" with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Daines (great actors, terrible execution).

Juila Stiles' delivery of the "10 Things I Hate About You" poem definitely deserved a sin off. Along with Mr. Morgan, who deserved a sin off for being one the most real teachers in film (and Daryl Mitchell's hilarious performances in the role). Can someone please answer the following questions? : 1.How do we see Kat establishing herself as a "Shrew" in the movie? 2. What similarities do you see in the opening scene with Cameron being shown the school by Michael and Lucentio and Tranio entering Padua. 3. Describe the differences between Kat and Bianca's relationship as sisters, compared to Katherine and Bianca's relationship in the play. 4.The movie has several small instances of honoring Shakespeare and the original play. Side note for the guys out there: a girl calling you "cute" isn't always demeaning. You can be "cute" and still "hot/sexy," they're not mutually exclusive. Unless the girl themself is actually being patronising (like the movie), it is a compliment and not intended to undermine your masculinity 👍

Totally agree. It only occurred to me a few days ago while thinking to myself, that some men might consider it emasculating to be called "cute". Ridiculous. If we had a more open "cuteness" culture between people, we could also have a lot less of it between people and their pets -- a.k.a. "fur babies". Super annoying all around.

@@fkrkf That's why I said, "like the movie." In this particular context, it was emasculating, BUT "cute" is not _always_ pejorative when used to describe a man. Context and tone matter, is the point I was trying to make. I have met many men, and dated a few, who absolutely hate the descriptor "cute" because of women who use it this way, but not all women are being demeaning or patronising when calling a man "cute," and it's important to judge a statement based on context, not preconceived notions.

Bianca was never manipulated, she was in on it pretty much from the beginning. She told Cameron that she can date if her sister does, in way that made it seem clear that she wanted Cameron to find her a date, then they both snooped in Kat's room to find info that would help Patrick get in with Kat. She led Cameron to believe that she was doing it so she could go out with him, when she was still really more interested in Joey, so Bianca was manipulating Cameron so he would manipulate Kat. She may not have known Joey was paying Patrick, but that's kind of irrelevant because Bianca never showed any real concern for Kat until Kat told Bianca about her past with Joey.

No, no, Ms. Jackson - you Brits don't really see that kind of space, but we Americans see it all the time. I grew up in a cheap working class neighborhood that had more space than that between the houses. Of course, Britain is an island, so I guess you've got limited space for yards after all of the land that's reserved for Henges and Hadrians and various palaces. Makes me want to laugh and cry whenever I see other neighborhoods (and we have plenty of those in America, too) where people are squeezed up against each other so tightly they can read the labels on each others' shirts.

Those houses are very typical for neighborhoods of that vintage (~1860-1950) in the Northwest. The houses themselves are a bit bigger than average, but to get any lots bigger than that you'd be looking at being ten or twenty miles away from where the film is set, which would be either the Queen Anne or West Seattle neighborhoods, or filmed, which would be Old Town/North End in Tacoma. Also, unrelated to your comment but related to the video, May is usually warm and dry in the Puget Sound. It mostly rains from October-April, plus the traditional West Coast June gloom. We just like to convince all you outsiders that the weather sucks so you stay away. it doesn't work that well though.

I went to the high school in this movie! Yup, the view and building are pretty amazing(the inside was remodeled shortly after filming, so the inside looks different). But it was built to be a hotel, so yeah technically over funded I guess haha. Also, there is roof access from the attic, some of the stuff would fit that way. Also also, those stairs he sings on are TERRIFYING. They are steep and there aren’t railings haha. Made me nervous every football game.

Stadium High (the high school; an actual high school which was actually used for the school sets in production) was originally built to be a luxury hotel. But it went through development hell and then caught fire. Tacoma school district bought it and turned it the historical landmark that it has become. So yes, the school was indeed overfunded because it was never intended to be a school.

I have to disagree about the 'snitching in detention' point. I was in detention frequently and the trick was always to wait until the principal came to check on you all after 20 minutes, then you could walk right out because he never came back again. I was one of the few people brave enough to do it but no one ever snitched on me. Also, the 1 or 2 times I got caught for it, all they did was give me more detention that I would sneak out of.

So funny story about that high school: it was filmed at Stadium High School in Tacoma Washington. I didn’t go to stadium when this was filmed, but I had friends who went there and were even background extras in the movie! Stadium was originally built to be a huge swanky hotel, but they bet on the wrong city because Tacoma never ended up being as big as Seattle ended up getting, so the hotel shut down (I think got sold to the city?) and the city of Tacoma said, meh let’s make it a public high school. So yeah, despite the fact that it looks like a giant fancy castle, it is in actuality a public high school, and most of the student body is lower to middle class. ;P

3 Random Things: 1. The Fender Strat IS ubiquitous, but if it was a genuine American-made strat, those things go for in the vicinity of a thousand bucks, 2. The band also was somewhat baffled--and terrified--about having to play on the roof, they said the payoff shot was great, but that they had to get it all in basically one take bc it was so expensive, and that the wind and everything from the height and the helicopter almost blew them off the goddamn roof, 3. I fucking love this movie, despite knowing in my heart that it's just a dippy teen flick, but...I guess that's what happens when you kind of 'grow up' with a movie. There are other movies people swear by that I find myself pondering, "What are you thinking?!"--and I guess this is one of mine.

Amy Jo Johnson was my real first celebrity crush I had SUCH a thing for her as an 8 year old (guess I knew I wasn’t gay pretty young and at a time when I had friends that prob turned out gay).
