@@yokevscott There are many people in this world who have never found their soul mate. They've been married, but their spouses aren't their soul mate, like a large percentage of marriages in modern times, they often get ugly and end in divorce. Then there are those who just sleep around with different men/women, but they're definitely not finding their soul mate through them. Anyway, my point is that the main character of this movie had a really tough time accepting that he couldn't find what a large percentage of people in the world never find.

@@elotromundofilms, I disagree. I think that both parties are at fault in this movie. Tom should have known and accepted that this was just a casual, NSA relationship and he should have treated it as such. On the other hand, Summer should have realised that a casual, NSA relationship between the two of them would *never* have worked out. She should have been honest with him from the very beginning and consistent with her beliefs. Showing up at his house and saying "yes" to the relationship was on her, because it was her choice. All she essentially did was waste Tom's time by having him believe that there was a chance (where there was none). Tom should definitely have been more mature about Summer and his relationship that he led with her in the beginning. I hated this movie because there is no one to root for in this movie. All of the characters completely suck and they should all die horribly, grisly deaths.

@Conor Bracken oh she totally has flaws and she can be kind of a hateful character because she is inconsiderate and kind of an asshole too, but that was not the point of the comments. What sort of saves the movie is its acknowledgement that Tom isn’t a hero - even Joseph Gordon-Levitt spelled it out. And the second acknowledgement that Tom hasn’t fallen for Summer but for his perception of Summer. He sees what he wants to see, not what there is. There is a timeless lesson here.

@@andreasolis9466, I mean, she sort of is, but not for the reasons that most incels would have you believe. This entire movie is filled to the brim with stupid people that make stupid decisions and everyone around them suffers for said stupid decisions. If Summer was really adamant that Tom wasn't "the one", then why the fuck is she wasting his time by pretending like he is? She should never have gone to his house, apologised, and formalised the relationship. If she didn't want to be with him, then she should have kept to her beliefs and ended it right then and there, but she didn't. She played into his game and wasted his time. Tom should have also known the difference between a casual, NSA relationship and a couple relationship. It wasn't fair of him to pressure her into saying yes when she was clearly uncomfortable with the idea. Like I said, everyone in this movie is stupid and deserves to die.

@@kennethguthrie180 it's easy to criticize behaviors/reactions in love from the outside looking in, just like it'd be easy to tell drug addicts to quit hurting themselves. Both Tom and Summer stick around because they get something out of it: pleasure, validation, companionship. The only thing that's different is the long-term expectation. We've all had mismatched and unreasonable expectations, we've all jumped into situations where we know we're likely to get hurt or to hurt others, yet we're still tempted to do it. It's nobody's fault, it's just part of our nature interacting with society's created expectations of romantic partners.

Indeed, the whole point of the story is that Tom sees himself as the hero in a romantic comedy, not realising that his actions are toxic, and that he doesn't care about Summer as a person. Him growing out of this narrow minded way of thinking marks his character development. 💖

Yeah, it's really interesting to look at him in different phases of life. Back when the movie released I was 19 years old, just dumped by my first girlfriend, feeling victimized and as I sat there in the cinema, watching this all by myself, I understood Tom so well. I felt like all of his ways of acting were justified. Then I got older and dare I say, wiser, growing completely past that kind of thinking. It's a wonderful movie with a good lesson to teach. It's together with Lost in Translation and Before Sunrise in the list of movies I can watch any time.

I think what the movie perfectly portrays (even though I'm not sure it acknowledges it) it the fact that people are not consistent in their behaviour. Oftentimes I feel like people expect you to be totally sure about every life choice you make, directly or indirectly accusing you to be hypocritical, when in reality peoples thoughts and desires are not consistent. Sure, Summer says she doesn't believe in love, but maybe we she actually is not as convinced of her own words as she seems. Maybe she just wants to persuade herself that she doesn't believe in it, because it has never happened to her.

people already hate Ted Mosby. And people disliked Tom from the beginning too (though that isn't that it's a bad movie as "Tom is an asshole" is kinda the point of the movie). I think, when something is new, the people willing to gloss over the problems get heard the most because the hype is so loud, but as years go by and the hype dies people start hearing the ney-sayers and realizing they have a point. It's also (one of) the reasons why things that get a lot of hype on release tend to get reconsidered and demoted in importance later on. Funny how you get the actress who is typecast as the manic pixie dream girl to play a deconstruction of that trope. Watching the movie recently, I really don’t think that Tom is some straight up asshole. Yes he has unrealistic expectations about their relationship. @@jasminethegrayknight, and yet, it wasn't Tom that formalised the relationship. If she was as adamant about NOT being a relationship as she had us believe, then things should have ended right then and there when he left her at her flat after punching the other bloke in the face. Though, she didn't. Instead, she let him have his way and entered into a relationship that she was not ready nor willing to enter. She essentially wasted Tom's time and gave him hope where there was none. No, there is nothing wrong with a grown woman having casual sex when she wants, but when she is clearly arousing feelings in a man that she clearly doesn't like (in that way) and she *doesn't* back off, then she's just asking for trouble. Agree with Taner Archibald up there. Yes, Tom is an asshole, but Summer has also expressly shown us that she is just as immature as he is and doesn't know what she really wants.

He went so far as to not ask her what she wanted. Just poor communication on both ends. She was clear on what she wanted with him, but continued the connection anyway. Then he never realized she acted cold and distant at times. And, how odd to be engaged to someone else weeks later. This movie is now added to my watch later list. I'm genuinely interested now.
