I love this movie because it's about kids just being kids and doing kid things. They don't have a goal or conflict to overcome that drives the plot. There's no real moral to the story. It's just about a family experiencing a Christmas together.

Credit goes first and foremost to Jean Shepherd, who shared his stories on radio and then in print. He naturally used the vignette to tell these tales, and to the credit of the filmmakers they not only seized on that for the film but they also retained the "rich tapestry" of language in the narration (done by Shepherd himself, because why not?). His stuff was very popular for a reason, so why not let it do the heavy lifting in this different medium?

I love this movie so much. I just saw it yesterday, and could watch it 5 times today. I think so many people love it so much because there is a universality to it. I'm a Black female who grew up in NYC during the '80s and '90s, but there are things I can relate to. My made me drink Ovaltine all the time in the winter. She dressed me in so many layers that I could barely put my arms all the way down during the winter season. It was notorious among the people we knew. The biggest thing I relate to the most is how alike my dad was to Ralphie's dad. I could totally see him buying that lamp (thank God it never happened). He often didn't censor himself around us kids. My best friend still laughs at the time he told someone to kiss his ass in front of us. I think we were 8. Then there's the electrical fire hazard at the outlet. We had one of those too. It was only a miracle and my mom's good sense that kept us safe. I could go on. Despite all of the craziness, my parents were wonderful people who loved us, and did their best despite not having much to do it with. Just like Ralphie's parents.

We met the actor who played Randy a few years back. Cool guy. He told us that in the scene where Randy couldn’t put his arms down, he actually very much *could* put his arms down, and they had to do so many takes that his arms got tired, so they had to stuff styrofoam into his jacket to hold them up for the joke. That’s a sin for making a child suffer!

Fun fact: the main street in Hammond, IN, where Shepherd grew up, is named Hohman. The reasoning behind the main street and city names is even more interesting, though. Hohman and Hammond were early business innovators in this fledgling town. When it was decided to actually create a city, they flipped a coin. The winner got the city named after him, and the loser had the main street named after him. 100+ years later, I live on Hohman Ave, in Hammond.

Darren McGavin's facial expressions are priceless. By his age at the time, he'd have more likely to have been Ralphie's grandfather, but he just plays it so well and it could be reduced to everyone seeing their parents as much older.
@lkatspencer4826

That's a good point about seeing your parents as older. I took it that, during that era, people were not obsessed with "youth culture" the way they are now, in fact, they went to pains to look mature. My grandparents were 18/17 when my mother was born, but to look at the photos and see how they dressed and did their hair, you'd think they were in their late 20s. In that context, I put the Old Man in his early 30s, even thoughDarren McGavin was 60. (Which blows my mind.)

He just passed away this year, but I love this scene even more now. Dads from that era ( mine would have been a teenage when the movie was set) give off a disconnected aura with their kids, but every now and then they showed how much they really knew what was going on. 11:27-11:32: Fun fact; for Traditional Catholics the Christmas season STARTS on Christmas day and continues until Mardi Gras, not from when the advertisers tell us to begin shopping and then crash on Christmas day. The decorating of the tree just prior (Dec 24th) to Christmas is still a tradition we keep with my family, now that we have children of our own. Christmastide (time) starts midnight Christmas Eve and continues until Lent. It’s awesome! Also it breaks up the humdrum winter blues.

My brother shot me with a BB gun intentionally. The BB went THROUGH the fatty portion of the ring finger on my left hand - still have the scar. Did not realize a BB could go through a finger at close range - think my brother was roughly 10' away when he shot me. Think I was like 11-12 years old at that time in 1970s. The wound did not bleed until I realized what had happened, more like was in shock that the BB went through the finger and, once the brain registered what had happened, then the blood flowed uncontrollably for a few moments.

This is my favorite Christmas movie for many reasons, followed by Christmas Vacation. A few of the reasons why I love A Christmas Story: The elementary school this was filmed at in Cleveland reminds me of the elementary school I went to in Cleveland; The snow reminds me of growing up in Cleveland, before we moved to Tennessee; The self awareness of the movie and the comedy of Ralphie's inner imagination scenes; finally, the adult humor throughout the film. This film was way ahead of its time and the type of storytelling wouldn't get popular until The Wonder Years came out in the 1990's. Yeah it has its flaws, but it;s still a classic.

The other thing is it's a period film that doesn't feel like a period film. There's nothing that really gives the film away that it's made in the 80's other than the film stock and filming techniques. It so much feels like the 1940s and isn't playing it for laughs or designed to show the differences between the time periods or to look down on the period. My theory is kids thought this film was lame when it came out and boomers and pre-boomers saw this, like my dad, and it was instant nostalgia for them. My dad used to tell me, 'this is exactly how it was back then,' and couldn't take his attention away from it. And because of those people, this film became a classic and is timeless.

This has been my favorite movie since it came out in theaters in 1984. I never did make the connection about the "bowling" vs "bo ling" at the restaurant. When Ralphie daydreams about Black Bart and his crnies, you can see the trampoline the guy uses to jump over the fence. When he finally gets to see Santa, we hear the screaming of the children that have already gone before him. The guy who tells Ralphie to get to the back of the line is Jean Shepard, the author/narrator. And I would suggest everyone read the book this movie was based on to get a little more insight. It's by Jean Shepard and called In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash.

Two more “sins” for future consideration… 1) When the old man comes home from work or shopping all excitedly having found out about the major reward he’s to receive his Oldsmobile is full of snow…That much snow on a car would make sense if he was just leaving his home to go somewhere, but in this case he’s returning home from somewhere. So logically either most of the snow will have melted from the heat of the car, or he would’ve brushed off the snow himself, or the wind and movement from the road would’ve contributed to knocking a bit off the car… 2) Melinda Dillon’s hair style. No way a housewife in the 1930s or 40s wears her hair like that in some 80s curl type fashion.

A Christmas Story is 40 years old! Didn't do well originally but over time this remains a timeless staple of the holidays as it should be Based on the book by Jean Shepherd I didn't know The film based on the directors real-life has plenty of charm, comedy, a real sense of childhood, and a true feel for the season So many memorable scenes from the tongue to the power pole to the pink bunny to the mean Santa at the mall to the local bully Lots of quotable lines too It helps the actual director himself narrates a lot of this so essentially it's his own story being told The film made a legacy of its own drawing fans from all over even imprinting into merchandise like clothing, Broadway shows, an official sequel, and non-stop tv programming year round Even the cast has kept it going thanks to fan conventions and tall shows although the man himself who begat everything was pretty unsentimental, more iconoclastic Plus it wasn't his idea yet there's an honesty in this story that's often mistaken for cynicism We can all relate to Ralphie or Shepherd to an extent of having a mean father who still loved his kids or a mother who hadn't had a good meal in so long We've all had bullies too as well as unable to sleep for the excitement of Christmas The film has so much universal appeal it's hard to ignore plus it teaches us a lesson in stoicism in the face of disappointment A solid portrayal of childhood as well reminding us what it was like to be kids during childhood in the holiday season

Fun fact! One of the guys outside observing dad’s special reward was wearing a Miami Dolphins hat from the 80’s. The movie takes place in the 40’s☺️a little wardrobe error. & also, the moms hairstyle is all wrong for this decade. It’s more 80’s as well.
