Also, TV Sins here: / @tvsins
We didn't see Divergent when it was in theaters, but the critical and audience reception was... mixed, to put it mildly. We found it to be pretty terrible, actually, regardless of its sin count. It just so happens to also have a high sin count, so, make of that what you will. Here are the sins of Divergent.

@JAMS Dream I was about to comment this; I reread parts of the book this morning. It didn’t dawn on me until this comment that Tris has this huge fear of getting found out as a Divergent, and yet it’s never addressed. Bit of a plot hole, but I don’t know how I would’ve addressed it as an author.

@@Mandy-nv1tx I looked up "Gacha." It literally means those machines where you put a coin in a slot, turn a handle and an egg rolls out containing a mystery prize. These are collectable, so it can mean "collectable" or "figurine." About computer games, it means ones where you pay real money for virtual collectables or gambling. I've played the game "Gacha Memories" which is completely free. In this game, someone called Luni sends you and others on missions, so I guess the you've been gachad (collected) (added to a collection) (or turned into an action- figure) not sure what "gacha logic" is.

honestly the BIGGEST issue with this universe is the fact that they make the kids choose a faction at sixteen. Sixteen! When your personality is the MOST volatile and subject to change! Have you ever met a sixteen-year-old? Everyone would be in dauntless!

I know right, adults are too old to understand what their 16 years old phase was. They want to cater to the masses, thats its okay for 16 year olds to experience this. Ill only understand making characters these if they really need them, like end of the world and there isn't enough of them around.

I am a sixteen-year-old, and I agree - my dream job changes every 3 month or so, like I actually understand I want to do it more than anything, and then... it just changes. Also I wouldn't be in Dauntless - I would much rather go in Erudite. My complaint is that only Dauntless fraction there seems to have a tattoo and piercing studio - like come on, I want it too! :D

Actually, that's a bit of a major plot point which I'll try to explain below, just note it's huge spoiler for the series. . . . . . . . . Honestly, I don't remember a whole lot, but iirc long before the events of the books, humanity has become super terrible. Basically like Sodom and Gomorrah mixed in with some Nazi Germany levels of terrible. And so to combat this, the government basically brainwashed everyone to just exhibit only one personality trait with the hope that when people only have one personality trait, they'll be less murder-y, and eventually, they'll be able to start learning other personality traits and become functioning and normal humans again. Don't ask me why that's the best option they came up with, I don't remember, but that's the rundown at least.

For example, Jonas from the Giver is supposed to be 12 (its the ceremony of 12) but, in the movie he's 18 and the ceremony is called the ceremony of 18. I understand it because it'd be a little weird to have a 12 year old be the main character of the movie, but still.

9:27 Four’s point is that Dauntless isn’t smart or conscious enough to realize that what she is experiencing isn’t real. Usually they don’t question it because of fight of flight, meaning that their brain doesn’t think logically, it just goes on instinct. Since their brain tells them they’re in a dangerous situation, all it says is to panic and find a way to survive. But Tris soon realizes that none of it is real, which is not what a Dauntless usually does in a situation. Since all of them have survival instincts, their brain doesn’t stop to think that it may or may not be real. She also somehow knows that she can break the glass by just tapping on it.

1:41 it is rare for a person to show multiple traits because of the backstory. Turns out the factions were created because a couple hundred years ago people were fucking around with genetics and genetic therapy, with the ability to control how smart, selfless, brave, kind or truthful people were through this dna manipulation. The dna manipulation fucked over mankind because if you're too intelligent, you lose kindness, if you're too brave you're reckless, etc. essentially causing a war. The creators of this dystopia created the faction system to keep the peace AND to see if they could slowly revert back to unmodified humans, calling those who were still genetically effected by the dna modification "damaged" and those who weren't, the divergents, "pure"

@@fernandarivas9677 The thing is, it's the trilogy. The first movie/book is just a set up of the world, and the whole story unravels in subsequent movies/books. So here we just have to accept the rules of the fictional world and go with it. Basically we learn all that along with characters, who just leave in this world of factions and believe that is what's supposed to be. Sorry for stating the obvious, but that's the thing with any fictional world, it can have any rules different from real world, and that's what makes all these stories interesting ))))

Did you come to this video to know how to make pancakes! Then this is your lucky day! *Ingredients:* 100g plain flour 2 large eggs 300ml milk 1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil, plus a little extra for frying lemon wedges, to serve (optional) caster sugar, to serve (optional) *Method:* Put 100g plain flour, 2 large eggs, 300ml milk, 1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil and a pinch of salt into a bowl or large jug, then whisk to a smooth batter. Set aside for 30 mins to rest if you have time, or start cooking straight away. Set a medium frying pan or crêpe pan over a medium heat and carefully wipe it with some oiled kitchen paper. When hot, cook your pancakes for 1 min on each side until golden, keeping them warm in a low oven as you go. Serve with lemon wedges and caster sugar, or your favourite filling. Once cold, you can layer the pancakes between baking parchment, then wrap in cling film and freeze for up to 2 months.

The maze runner (books & movies) are okay(ish)(same for the Divergent books/movies/series), but they BOTH have RETAIRDO premises. The maze runners' premise is WAY worse though, as is their "solution" to it. They even both delight in killing off MAIN characters. For me, that's NEVER forgivable.

The whole premise of this structure is impossibly lame. How is it possible that you can convince the whole of society that: 1) people have only one personality trait 2) there are only 5 personality traits 3) some people apparently have NO personality traits at all.

@@waldrcla000 Traits naturally crossover. The dauntless would also have to be intelligent to pull off their stunts; if you're brave but stupid you won't last long. And the abnegates have to have a degree of courage in order to be leaders, as do the intellectuals. It stands to reason that the selfless abnegates would also value truthfulness as honesty is related to morality, and the supposedly 'factionless' would have to have a degree of bravery and intellect just to survive when they are cast out and allotted almost no resources. And why aren't there at least 10 factions? What about funny people, creative people, what about the principles of justice and fairness, utilitarian pragmatists, sensualists and aesthetes? Those people have a role in society too.
@waldrcla000
@waldrcla000 5 жыл бұрын
@@moonlily1 Hey, I never said the explanation made sense. That was just the explanation they pulled out of their butts in the third book. Also, the Abnegation folks definitely weren't truthful, given that they had the information about the purpose of their city and kept it to themselves. Still, that's the explanation. They're trying to fix humanity by making divergents or something. But they also didn't bother telling the city that divergents are a good thing for no good reason. It's not a good explanation by any means, but it's unfortunately the canon explanation. Edit: Holy crap, I said explanation a lot.

@@waldrcla000 Well, that's the whole point of my comment: that the film and the books are weak in that the entire premise makes no sense, nothing else following it is going to either because the whole idea is logically indefensible.
@robertmcanany6397
@robertmcanany6397 5 жыл бұрын
@@moonlily1 The way the books covered this was much better, and the movie left it out entirely, but the whole thing goes like this: In an effort to make humanity better, people began to genetically modify itself in a effort to force certain specific personality traits. There were 5 different "ideas" as to which trait was most beneficial in this way so each one went into production. This, of course, caused horrible problems and the world basically killed itself off. Now the few remaining non-genetically modified people who still run the world have created city-wide experiments to see if the genetic damage can be reversed. Chicago is one of those experiments. The goal of these experiments is to reverse the genetic modifications and produce "normal" people. In these cities, "normal" people are the ones that are labeled as "divergent," because they show propensities to more than one of the traits focused on in the original genetic experiments. So, essentially, Tris isn't special, she's just a normal person and it's everyone else that's fucked up. Now, it has been a few years since I read this book series so I may have missed a key point or two, but that's the general idea. Also, no...it's not a particularly good theory to base things on, but hey...science *fiction* . Also, the books had a super obvious religious leaning, and in the end, Tris was a Jesus allegory who died to save humanity. It was kinda bullshit, really lol.

yes cause it just ended with them totally screwing up all the mazerunner sequels. Not gonna lie and say I didn't enjoy seeing how Hunger Games played out but the series as a whole is overrated and most others are going to be forgotten, for now. I watched a direct-to-dvd one that was better than the mazerunner or divergent sequels, not that that is saying much lol.

1:10 In the books it explains this concept better. First off, there’s only supposed to be one testing room per faction. Second, most of the testers are abnegation, but since you aren’t supposed to be tested by someone in your faction, abnegation is usually tested by dauntless or candor.

One of the things that annoyed me the most in this movie was the fact that when you’re on the train on your way to the divergent camp, you can change your name. You can do this then and only then, however you find out that the reason that Four is named ‘Four’ is because there were four of his father in the fear simulation that you go through WAY after you join dauntless so he couldn’t possibly be named Four!

I totally get that he has for fears in the simulation, what I don’t understand is how he picked the name ‘Four’ before he ever went through the stimulation, because all four fears are his father and he wouldn’t have seen it in that way until he went through the simulation, and you can’t change your name after that first day. But I’ll have to look at that other book.

@@LedgerJoker77 A kid kind of did if you consider her one, considering she was a college student when she wrote them. This series makes me irritated because it's someone getting rich off of ripping off several popular YA novels at the time (mainly Hunger Games and Harry Potter). It's also aggravating because the more time you spend considering the story, characters, and such, the more you begin to realize how little sense most of it makes. Then again, I get annoyed someone got rich from making poorly written crap like Twilight and stupid crap like Fifty Shades of Grey... Now that I'm older, I choose to try and ignore these mostly terrible existing franchises instead.
