With the 5th Mission Impossible film coming up soon, we thought we'd go back and watch the original movie in the franchise and look for sins. It's a mission we chose to accept.
Thursday: More sins with false identities.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins do YOU want to see recounted?

The self-destructive tape used in the original series actually had a drop of magnesium on the tape that activated when it went over a drop of potassium with a binary activator on a set point of the tape causing a tiny explosion that would destroy the interior of the tape. This was used in later episodes of Mission Impossible as the effects team thought it would be a great idea to show it off in the show on a reel to reel player... That happened to belong to the producer, thus destroying the expensive reel to reel player. After a few episodes of using stock footage of it self-destructing, they started using cassette tapes. The cast, crew, directors, and producers never allowed the FX team to touch anything of theirs after this incident.

Sorry if it's already been mentioned (I didn't have the patience to read all of the comments, although I did read a lot before giving up), but 12:13 - 12:19 is not a sin at all, because this scene takes place in a first class car, which would be populated by business(wo)men and rich people, so the fact that nearly everyone has a cell phone in 1996 actually does make sense (I know, I was 18 in 1996). Of course, to notice this detail, you have to be familiar with the TGV (or its Eurostar or Thalys re-brands), so we can't blame you for that :-)

I remember when this movie came out and people complained that it was too complicated and hard to follow, because this was when action movies rarely had a plot of any significance. When I saw it in the theater, I was pleasantly surprised that it made me think and kept me guessing. I rewatched it not long ago and found plot holes that I didn't really notice as a teenager, but it is still a good movie. I assume from the "sentence" that you will be sinning part two next, and for that I thank you.

One sin I've noticed (though I forgive it because it's such a cool scene) is near the end when Ethan puts on the glasses and says "I'm not the only one who knows you're alive." That proves nothing. Just five minutes earlier Ethan was wearing a mask that looked exactly like Jim, so how would Kittredge know he's not just looking at a mask of Jim. If Jim were to kill Ethan, the mask would be found with Ethan, then Kittredge would just assume that all he saw on his watch was a mask of Jim. Still an awesome scene, though.

They could have just knocked out the technician instead of waiting for him to leave. That way they don't have to be quiet and can stand on the ground. It's not like they were trying to get away without anyone knowing they were there, because they leave the log there for the technician to see right away. They would have gotten away easier and accessed the computer easier if they just knocked him out when he was using it.

In the original tv show (which they stole the title and theme song from for the movies) the IMF specialized in dangerous & meticulous covert missions which were, most of the time, surprisingly logical and coherent in their execution, and made up for the tv quality production. There's very few screenwriters in hollywood today who are are crafty enough to reward their audience's intelligence beyond flashy spectacle; E.g. gun play, Cruise doing crazy stunts, car chases etc...which no covert spy would ever get involved in.

A possible reason for whipping out the two disks during the mission was that he only meant to take one out but removed both instead. As to why he would have more than on in the first place, probably in case something happened to the first one, since disks are known to get corrupted from time to time.

There are several reasons they would have designed the disc so that it wouldn’t transmit location until it’s booted up. 1) you couldn’t exactly have a battery powered tracking beacon attached w/o being noticed, and don’t know how they would get one inside and have it still be a functional disc; 2) In many movies they show trackers with delayed activation to avoid detection. If they were able to get a tracking device inside the disc, the battery would certainly have limited power and would probably go out before it reached the intended target; 3) Having the disc transmit location when it boots up not only solves the power issue and avoids detection, but also ensures the location is revealed only once relevant. I mean, this is a movie w a ton of made up tech; there are obviously reasons they designed the disc to function that way.

There were SO many more but it would have taken too long to note them.. One major one is that if Jim Phelps wanted money- any Mission Impossible fan knows that he would not have to go through all this trouble to get it. Phelps has so many contacts in so many places, he has access to more resources than we can imagine. Honestly, having Jim Phelps go through all that for some money is ridiculous. Tom Cruise just wanted to kill him off so he could create another character and not live in Phelps shadow. It was a silly motive. Totally unbelievable. THANK YOU for doing it :D

Just watched this great movie again and watched the Cinama Sins take on it. As always a great video. Unfortunately you missed a couple sins during the final scene with the train. 1. The TGV is an electric train which gets its power from electric overhead wires. 2. A helicopter would not be able to track a TGV due to these same electric overhead wires. 3. The TGV train used to connect London with Paris is called the Eurostar and looks very different. 4. The biggest sin in this is what the writers did to Jim, it's obvious they wanted him out of the picture so that Cruise could hog the hero action, but turning Jim into a traitor goes totally against the character we came to know in the series, at the very least if the writers wanted him out of the way for future franchise, they perhaps could have given him a hero's death.

None of the movies have anything to do with the tv show, which was really a "caper of the week" series. Jeremy's references to Ocean's 11 highlight that. They turned a taut, exciting series into Yet Another Superhero franchise. And, frankly, I'm tired of Tom Cruise as Superman in every movie. The only decent thing he's done for years was Collateral. They did the same thing with The Equalizer. I love Denzel, but those two movies just recycled his Man on Fire character.

Another sin: You adapt a TV show because it was popular and parts of it are still part of pop culture. You then have every character, despite being played by different actors anyway, turn evil, die, or both. If you wanted Cruise to be the hero, just have HIM play Jim Phelps, the leader in the series, and move on. Then have him form the team from the TV show and have original characters, this Jim's previous team, turn evil, die, or both. This way you don't piss off the very fans you were going for by naming this Mission: Impossible.

Dear CinemaSins, I once saw a video where a very wise man named Jeremy said of Hollywood remaking, rebooting, creating sequels the following line: "I get it. I see what happened. Like any huge industry, you set up systems. Systems that are designed to create efficiency. Rules - some written and some not - on how the movie making process makes money. Hero always wins, love always concurs. These directors make money consistently, even though the critics hate their films. These stars are bankable. Over time, these systems became routines and then became habits. Bad habits." Now, I don't begrudge you guys for doing what you think will make you the most money. You're individuals, not some huge industry. I enjoy the channel and find the videos entertaining. But I'd like to point out in just the last couple months you've given us EWW Terminator 2, 3 and Salvation before Terminator Gensyisisys came out, EWW Insidious 2 before Insidious 3 came out, EWW the Lost World and JP 3 before Jurassic World, EWW Magic Mike before Magic Mike 2 came out, EWW Poltergeist before the Poltergeist remake came out, EWW Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome before Mad Max Fury Road came out, EWW Pitch Perfect before Pitch Perfect 2 came out, EWW Hulk and the Incredible Hulk before Avengers 2 came out. Now the Mission Impossible movies kick in just early enough to do them all before the fifth one comes out. Again, not hating on you guys for doing this. Just pointing it out before it becomes as stale as that which you are mocking. Personally, I like the channel best when it's unpredictable and you bounce around all over the place. Give us Interstellar, then the Lost Boys, then War of the Worlds (2005 and 1953), then Top Gun, then Million Dollar Baby, then the Lego Movie, then 12 Monkeys, then Jaws. Spread out the Star Wars movies over the next six months instead of dumping all six in our laps at once. Mix it up! One man's opinion. I'm sure not everyone shares it.

On the fire fighting sin. In government buildings like Langley, embassies, pentagon, etc. In the case of a fire, they typically don't evacuate, but move everyone to another location in the building because those buildings are designed to contain a fire to a specific area, therefor not allowing the fire to spread. Additionally, fire fighters aren't allowed to just come waltzing in, they are in fact escorted, or a fire fighting team is on standby at the building, depending on what building we're talking about.

Using a person for this purpose is not only humiliating to the person- but how does he know the exact height he should be hoisting Ethan, blindly? He imagines it really well? If he was replaced by a winding gear, Ethan could set his own distance from the ground, and the rat wouldn't be a problem at all.

#66 Back in 95/96 (year filmed vs year released) caller ID existed, but it didn’t instantly give you the number of ANY phone in existence. There were often times numbers would show up as out of area - and they were relatively local numbers. Think of how many calls even now show up as Unknown. Plus, having the number vs having the location are two different things. It’s plausible it would take a few seconds for them to get the precise location of a phone booth overseas.

>You are directly above an open vent leading to the room with the sensitive security microphones. So breaking the volume limit here should be just as "toast" as doing it IN the actual room. Except that's not remotely how sound or volume works. The term "volume" for loudness should be a hint; what else is the term "volume" used to describe? That's right, size. The bigger something is, the more volume it has. Noise is dispersed across a volume, the further the microphones are away the quieter the sound. Even if he's above the very room in question, microphones in the room would read a lower decibel reading than the microphone on his arm. It actually checks out. They might register a sound but not necessarily above the alarm threshold.

Dark Kronis I know the feelings. My biggest problem was the movie turning Jim Phelps into a bad guy, sh**ing all over Peter Graves' established character. Coincidentally, however, I will admit that I was awed by the script writers having the massive balls to take an established character that we absolutely knew was a good guy, and turning him bad so the big reveal near the end was Death Star sized. It was one hell of a curve ball.
